Sea lions are well known for performing in marine shows, where they entertain audiences with tricks, vocalisations, and expressive movements, which closely matches Primarina's role as a singer and performer. Primarina's ability (liquid voice) can create and control water balloons through song also reflects the loud and vocal nature of sea lions, which are known for their barking calls and social displays. In contrast, true seals are generally quieter and less associated with public performances. Additionally, Primarina is often depicted sitting upright and presenting itself gracefully, similar to how sea lions pose during shows. Although its streamlined body and lack of visible ear flaps are more seal-like, its personality, and vocal abilities suggest that sea lions had a much greater influence on its design.

Marine mammals have to hold their breath underwater, but some species like the northern elephant seal have to hold it on land too! To conserve heat and energy while they bask, molt, and nurse pups while, northern elephant seals will go through phases of 'apnoea', wherein they cease breathing for 8-10 minutes, followed by periods of breathing for about 5 minutes. On average, they only breathe about 9-10 times per minute while hauled out on the beach.
