Forest trolls are one of the most fierce and enduring troll subgroups in Azerothâs rich history. Originating from the dense northern woodlands of Lordaeron, they were once rulers of the mighty Amani Empire, with their capital in the ancient city of ZulâAman. Their legacy is one of conflict, resilience, and a long-standing rivalry with the high elves and humans who once shattered their dominance.
Physically, forest trolls are tall, agile, and powerful. Their moss-covered green skin, a result of a unique biological connection with plant life, gives them a natural camouflage within their woodland homes. This trait not only defines their appearance but reflects their deep-rooted bond with nature.
Over time, the once-unified forest trolls splintered into various tribes, each with its own beliefs and paths. The Amani tribe, led in the past by the legendary Zulâjin, remains fiercely determined to restore its lost glory. Other tribes, like the Vilebranch, Witherbark, and Shadowpine, continue to operate in the Hinterlands and surrounding areas. Some, like the Mossflayer, have experienced dark transformations due to magical corruption and war.
Among them, the Revantusk tribe stands out as the only group to have formed a cautious alliance with the modern Horde. However, many forest trolls remain distrustful of outsiders, due to past conflicts.
Culturally, forest trolls are deeply spiritual, practicing ancient forms of voodoo and Loa worship. Their lands are marked by carved stone totems and ceremonial masks, representing their reverence for the spirits and their history. While their traditions can be intense and mysterious, they remain a vital part of troll identity.
Though divided, the forest trolls are far from forgotten. Their strength, cunning, and connection to the wild continue to shape their place in Azerothâs evolving story. Whether encountered as allies or adversaries, they are a people who embody the unyielding will of the forest itself.

So, I think I've figured out why, out of all the powerful demons in Hell, Vox is SO focused on Alastor.
It's because he needs a nemesis from a time before water guns were mass produced and widely known about, who also hasn't bothered keeping up with the times. Otherwise, it would be over in seconds.
Like, any 90's kid would take one look at Vox's head and just go "Alright, imma go grab my super soaker."
sorry but my homestuck brain rot mandates me to ask you this;
do you have any headcanons as to how trolls look/are Different from humans? like their more alien features and such, or do you just see them as grey horned humans?
hi for the sake of god HELLO. anon, i have so many headcanons it truly is a mistake to open these floodgates. I also can't draw at the moment due to wrist pain so I hope a written answer will have to do for now :')
draft edit: THIS HAS BEEN SITTING IN MY ASKBOX FOR SO LONG. Anon i am gripping you by force, i literally have so much, and this is what i can think in like 10 minutes of pondering.
I don't think trolls are gray humans. In fact, i believe they're more like bug-like bipeds, being closer to bees than they are to mammals. This is a fun bit there are three "sexes" to trolls: females (the mothergrub!), males (the actual trolls!) and the workers (drones!). All of them have their roles and etc.
Since you're asking for the Looks, here are the basics:
Juvenile trolls (the ones we see more often in homestuck) are the most human-like ones both in shape and stature because theyâre still young. At that stage their height equals human teen height, and sometimes humans can even be taller.
Their first puberty, or pupation, sets in at an older age than humans usually, so where a human teen starts getting their stuff slowly rolling at around 11-14, a troll would only get their puberty at around 17 or 18, but all of it comes in at the same time via molt.
Trolls go through several pupations, or molts. Two of them are the most important ones: The pupation from their larval grubby stage to juvenile, where they go from straight up looking like an insect to a child, more human-like. Then the maturation molt, where they leave their juvenile forms to get an adult appearance that makes them taller and their skin darker, with every subsequent molt to that being basically an "update" to their form, to make them even taller and stronger. They will keep doing thay up until they die, like lobsters! Even lowbloods get taller and buffer than the average human, and from indigo and up they only get taller and taller. Below is just a VERY simple height chart, no other body hcs applied.
More often than not, trolls are STOCKY. Theyâre beefy and their structure is naturally heavy than a human. A troll weights a round1.5 of a human the equivalent size and body type. Even the skinny ones. Theyâre dense, but theyâre also much much stronger and much sturdier.
And as you might have already noticed if youâve looked at my art, NONE of my trolls really are grey humans, or at least i try not to make them that way!
i always make sure to give them both bug-like traits and other animal traits. They all have little tails that vary in shape and lenght by caste, VERY often digitigrade feet and sometimes other face structure modifications, such as multiple eyes, chitinous face with big mouths and such and also fur and body markings. YES all my trolls glow under UV light also, it wasnât just an one off headcanon thing, their vision is adapted to see the patterns, and iâm pretty sure their range of vision differs from ours, specially if you judge theyâre night-time predator bugs.
Also! fun fact, but i classify seadwellers depeding on their most comfortable position on sea depth:Â pelagic (shallow to middle water level, most common, can go deeper but not live long term down there), benthic (bottom feeders, but not from deep sea), deep sea/abyssal (inhabits naturally below the bathypelagic zone + abyssal, CAN go deeper and survive the pressure of the bottom of the sea but definitely couldnt live there), strict abyssal seadwellers (extremely rare, cannot live outside water at all. all mutants). Each one of those is built similarly, but they all have different functions and traits that differ!
So Iâve had to postpone a bunch of projects because I just, donât have enough time. But there is a headcanon explored on the Kaia comic that I really wanted to share and talk about with others, so Iâm gonna go ahead and just do that XD
I think that the Temples and cults of Akunda and Kimbul on the desert of Volâdun are not there despite it being a place for criminals, but actually take a function there because of it. Let me explain!
So, for starters, I always found it curious that Akunda was stated to be the Loa of Storms and new beginings (edited for correction), and took away the painful memories of those who asked for it in his temple. Like, weirldy convenient that people that are sent to this place because of their âmistakesâ or wrongdoings can just, forget about them.
Then on the Temple of Kimbul you have his teachings written on a visible spot and being very focused on courage, strength of will, not thinking youâre above nature, and just generally very noble values? And Iâm assuming those are the ones the followers held when the Temple was inhabited.
And there is their placement on the map. Here I put my character on the entrance of each temple, in front of each Loa, and then compared.
It gave to me the impression that they were possitioned opposites of each other both geographically and also âmorallyâ? As in, if we follow the logic of the Temples being there because of the outlaws, in one place theyâd be forgetting their past pain and starting anew, while on the other theyâd be faced with a specific set of morals that could revolve about facing their wrongdoings and rectifying them. Like, imagine rehabilitation.
Runing away from your mistakes vs facing them, sort of metaphor
(Obviously the out of game, IRL reason as to why the lessons of kimbul are so visible is for the player to have clues to complete the shrine of the ring quest, and Akunda erases memories to have to recover them for an important character, but Iâm jsut havig fun here so xD)
Although, I donât think all of the outlaws that Zuldazar sent to Volâdun would go to either of the temples, nor all the people living in those temples would have been criminals. Thereâs always exceptions and variety. We also donât exactly know what crimes entail banishment to Volâdun, and if you know about caste social systems you know some ââcrimesââ can be bullshit, so... I wonât speculate on that end.
Thereâs also an object called [Chain of Exemption] that implies you can only leave Volâdun with a special permit, so Iâm guessing an exiled couldnât easily leave Volâdun, or maybe could never leave, but life on the temples is a better alternative than the desert for sure (this item was added on shadowlands though).
The fall of the temple of Kimbul must have upset the balance at some point, given how he refused to accept new followers until the last ones were avenged. And we donât know when exactly the Sethrak started to turn hostile (I didnât consider Sethraliss in this equation because I couldnât find a Troll follower of her in game), so this is a headcanon I have of the past of Volâdun, and not of current. It gets a bit more explored in the comic as I say, but this is the gist of it ^^
What do you think, too far fetched? Maybe some of it makes sense? Let me know xD
Also, noticed the modus operandi of the Naga when it comes to Kimbul and Gral? Kill their followers while the Loa is away, leave their temple in ruins? Whatâs that about, are we gonna get more of Naga vs Trolls in the future? I think Iâll have to make another post regarding that.

It was a calm night in a small human town on the borders of the troll lands. The sun had just set, and the people went about their business. Shops closed, bars opened, some made their way home to call it a day, some went off to enjoy their nights.
And in the church at the center of town a priestess went about her cleaning duties.
The life of clergy wasnât exactly glamorous. It was a lot of busy work and not a lot of recognition.Â
Not like Aurea minded, she did this for the pleasure of helping others. Though it would be nice if she could do more.
She could still help people here, but could she really make that much of a difference while stuck in this small isolated town?Â
The Gods had gifted her with magic, shouldnât she be out there saving people in need?
How selfish of her.Â
She should just focus on her tasks, and care for the people she can care for.Â
Her dreams of adventure could wait.
Nearly an hour had passed by the time the head priest returned to congratulate her on her hard work. He was a kind old man, happy to serve the people just like she was.
With her nightly tasks done she was ready to head home when she heard a loud thumping against the templeâs door, like someone was trying to knock it down with a battering ram. She froze, unsure of what to do, and for a moment there was silence, before a loud booming voice called.
âIs anyone there? I was told I could find a healer here.â
Oh. It was a trollâŠ
Why would a troll need a healer?
The head priest wasted no time opening the doors for them.Â
The figure behind it stood easily over 10ft tall, though they were downright scrawny for their size. They had blue skin, short white hair, and a pair of small tusks protruding from their mouth. They wore only a simple vest and pants, not bothering with shoes, or any protection from the colder weather.
And they seemed perfectly fine.
âWhat is it you need, my child?â The head priest asked.
âMy name is Talum,â he introduced himself with a bow that nearly had him knocking his forehead to the arch of the door, âme and my party are traveling north and wanted to request the services of a healer to accompany us.â
Party?Â
As in an adventuring party?
âMy child, I donât thinkââ
âIâd be happy to accompany you,â Aurea interrupted without a thought, âthough Iâm not sure of what service I can be to your kind.â
Talum waved off her worries, âweâre expecting plenty of burn wounds in the future, so youâll be plenty useful⊠oh! And properly compensated. We do not expect you to work for free.â
Compensation was the last thing on her mind if she was being honest.Â
Sure money is nice, but the chance to truly go out there and make a difference in the world?Â
She just couldnât let that opportunity pass her by.
The head priest loudly cleared his throat and looked wearily her way, âare you sure about this? Youâve never left the city walls before, and Iâm certain this journey will be arduous.â
âIâm certain,â she answered, coming over to him and taking his hands, âplease trust me. I know I can do this, and Iâm certain this is where Iâm needed most.â
The man looked ready to argue, but some puppy dog eyes were more than enough to get him to agree.
Talum chuckled at the sight, âvery well then! Consider yourself hired. Weâll be departing tomorrow night, so youâll have all day to pack up and get ready.â
âOf course,â she happily answered, before realizing something odd about his plan, âwait. Weâll be leaving at night?â
~~~
Right.Â
They were trollsâŠÂ
Blessed by the goddess of the moon with great night vision. They were active exclusively at night, which meant she also had to be active at night. They didnât like fire, so no torches either. She would have to make do with an enchanted lantern that generated no heat.
Aurea shuddered as the cold winds blew past her, and she pulled her cloak closer to cover her chest.Â
Behind her Cendis chuckled.
âNeed some warming up, big girl?â
Cendis was a fire giant. Somehow even taller than her troll companions by a good 5ft at the very least. Her eyes glowed red in the night, and small embers pulsed within the red braids of her hair, illuminating the ashen skin of her face and the black scales of her cloak.
âIâm fine, thank you,â Aurea insisted, though she wouldnât mind a little more warmth, âwouldnât want to make our friends uncomfortable.â
âOh please,â Cendis scoffed, âhey Talem, quit being a little bitch, and let me make some fire for our friend.â
Talem, the leader of the group turned to look at her.Â
She was Talumâs twin, though she was somehow much larger than him. She was built like a stone wall, and her muscles would already be terrifying on someone of human size, let alone a troll. Her tusks and her hair were also considerably longer than Talumâs - he liked keeping both trimmed and well cared for.
Then there was the most standout trait about her. Something Aurea constantly tried not to look at, and had yet to bring attention to.Â
Talem was missing her left arm. All that was left was a burned stump right below the shoulder.
âAre you fucking serious?â Talem asked, sounding more annoyed than angry, but still carrying far more antagonism than Aurea was comfortable with.
âCome on,â Cendis insisted, âwhatâs the worst that could happen? Sheâs our healer, if we fuck up she can just patch you back up in no time. Right, big girl?â
âR-Right,â she stammered out, partially because of the cold and partially out of surprise of being brought into this conversation.
âSee?â
âUgh, fine,â Talem waved off, âjust donât do anything stupid.â
âWhen have I ever?â Cendis joked, though from Talumâs look it was clear this wasnât a question that should be answered.
This set the unfortunate pace that the next few days followed.Â
Aurea would struggle to adapt to her new conditions, Talem would act dismissive, and one of the other two would come to her defense.Â
The friction between them only became worse once she realized Talem was the clear leader of the group. They were all friends - all except Aurea of course - but Talem was the one in charge.
Which did beg the question.Â
Why?Â
She was the boss, in theory she was the one who decided to hire Aurea. She was the one who went out of her way to get a healer.Â
Then why did she seem to resent her presence so much?
At least she still had the company of the other two. Cendis especially seemed the most welcoming and accommodating. So Aurea grew to trust her, and one night when Talem left camp to go hunting, she found herself asking her companion the reason for their leaderâs behavior.
âItâs because sheâs an idiot,â Cendis answered matter of factly, lounging back next to her tent.
âI donât think thatâs fair to her,â Aurea tried to defend, sitting by the campfire.
âNo, sheâs right,â Talum nodded in agreement, though it was hard to hear him since he was sitting so far away from the flame, âmy sister is an idiot.â
Those werenât the most helpful of answers,so she pressed on. âIâm sure there has to be more to it than that.â
âOkay, youâre right,â Cendis surrendered, âsheâs proud, hard headed, and an idiot.â
Aurea sighed, âfine, you donât have to tell me if you donât want to.â
âIâm serious,â the giant insisted, âlook Talem is easily the nicest, most clever person I know, but the moment her pride is on the line she turns into a huge pain in the ass.â
âWhat?â That didnât make sense to her, âshe hired me, how am I a threat to her pride?â
Talum flinched, âso about that⊠Cendis only told her we were hiring a healer well after I talked to you about it.â
âOh yeah,â Cendis chuckled, âand I had to threaten to slice her other arm off if she didnât accept that we were hiring you.â
Aurea looked utterly appalled by the implication. Cendis didnât seem to understand that.
âWhat?â She shrugged, âIt would grow back.â
She sputtered, trying to find a way to argue that point, but soon decided it was best to just leave that be and focus on the main topic at hand.
âOkay, but why all the subterfuge? Why did you have to hide it from her that you were gonna have a healer?â
âBecause needing you is the same as admitting things have changed, and to do so is admitting defeat,â this time Talum answered, walking closer to their campfire so he may speak to her eye to eye, âand every time something has to change to accomodate for you, sheâs reminded of that defeat.â
Right. That. So thatâs why they hired her in the first place. The one thing she had been refusing to address this entire time.
Aurea shrunk into herself, and pulled her cloak closer around her.Â
Maybe she shouldnât have come into this journeyâŠÂ
No.Â
She said she wanted to help more people, and Talem clearly needed help, even if she was being a stubborn, proud idiot about it. She just had to find a way to get through to her.
She stood up again and met Talumâs eyes. âHow do I get her to get over it then? I need her to know Iâm not leaving this group, and that Iâm not some burden she has to bitterly accept!â
Cendis chuckled heartily at that and answered, âoh, I know just the way.â
~~~
Days passed, and Aurea held her new trick close to her chest, waiting for the perfect moment to use it. The perfect moment to gain Talemâs respect, and regain some control over her adventuring life.Â
âŠEither that or ruin it entirely, get kicked off the party for good, and have to trek two weeks back through the forests again, all on her own.
But no good plan ever came without risks.
And speaking of plansâŠÂ
Talem was going over the maps of the coming marshlands surrounding the black dragonâs abandoned lair.Â
There was a well worn trail snaking its way through the sparse patches of solid ground in these lands. It would make for a winding journey, but a safe and dry one.
Though that didnât seem like Talemâs plan.
âThe water around here should be barely knee height,â she pointed out, gesturing at the map, âwe can easily save a day of travel by cutting through here.â
âIâm sorry, what?â Aurea blurted out without even realizing what she was saying.
âLook itâs not that bad, itâs shallow water,â Talem argued, sounding as if she already knew this was gonna be a problem.
âThatâs waist height for me!â She almost yelled this time, âIâm not walking through waist high, murky swamp water, in the middle of the night!â
âWhat? Do you want me to carry you around then, princess?â Talem spat with a cruel laugh.
âWhat I want is for you to actually take me in consideration for once!â She jumped up, staring the sitting troll right in her eyes, âIâm as much a part of this group as you, and I demand to be treated with respect.â
âRespect!? Do you know how considerate Iâve been this entire time!?â Talem shouted back, pushing herself up as well, âletting you keep a fire every night, slowing down our march to keep up with your pace, stopping early so you could get used to traveling at night. Iâve done nothing but be welcome towards you, and all you do is complain!â
âIâm the one complaining!? You canât do a single favor without acting like itâs some great, tragic sacrifice!â The shouting was exaggerated, meant to escalate things, but oh was it cathartic. Maybe she was faking it less than she thought, âmaybe if you were such a great planner, you would have considered my needs before hiring me!â
Talem growled, âwell, maybe I shouldnât have hired you in the first place!â
At that Talum decided to intervene, rising up to his sister eye level, âhey, hey, maybe we should all just calm down and talk things out later.â
âNo!â Aurea shouted, making Talum step back in surprise, âI am not just going to stand here and take this any longer! Talem! I challenge you to a trollâs duel!â
There was a beat of silence.Â
Talum stunned in shock that she would use her secret weapon now, Cendis looking almost giddy to watch this unfold, and Talem utterly confused for but a moment before shooting her two other companions a murderous glare.Â
Cendis only replied with a shrug, which did nothing to calm her temper.
âYouâre kidding me, right?â Talem asked, baffled, before turning back to Aurea, âyouâre kidding. I could pin you down with one foot.â
Aurea was unaffected by the boast, standing firm against the troll - even though she was barely half her size - âif youâre so sure, then you have no reason to deny my challenge.â
âAlright, big girl,â she said, cracking her neck, âIâll bite. A trollâs duel it is.â
With a quick command they began to move their maps aside to free up space for their clash.
A trollâs duel. A battle not to the death or to first blood, but to submission.Â
All weapons were allowed, though most preferred to fight with their bare hands and grapple their opponents to the ground. This was not an option for Aurea, so instead she would fight with her grandpaâs greatsword.
âAre you both ready?â Cendis asked, taking the role of their judge.
âLast chance to ditch,â Talem taunted.
âReady.â Was all the answer she gave her.
âTch, ready,â Talem echoed.
âVery well. Begin! â
Aurea rushed in and stuck by Talemâs right side. It would be easy to focus the left, use the missing arm to her advantage, but that would only undermine her plan. She had to prove to Talem that she was more than just a reminder of her failure, and she couldnât do so by pressing on her left side.
The troll swung with her right arm, her claws raking dirt and tossing it towards Aurea, who was forced to step back. She barely recovered her footing when a massive fist came crashing towards her head.
Aurea lunged to the side, and the ground shook with the impact of that fist.Â
Okay, maybe she underestimated Talemâs strength just a little bit.
Another swing came her way, but this time she managed to roll under it, getting right next to Talemâs leg.Â
She swung her sword to the back of the trollâs knee⊠but hesitated. Talem could regenerate, but she had never harmed someone before, she wasnât sure if she could.
Her opponent cared very little for her moral dilemma and simply backhanded her hard enough to send her flying into the treeline.Â
With a loud crack, she hit a tree trunk shoulder first.
âReady to give up?â Talem asked.
Aurea looked at her arm. Dislocated. Well that wasnât good.Â
She pushed her arm back into place, and whispered a quick prayer to heal her muscles.Â
A feeling like warm, soothing, water washed over her shoulder and she gave it a feel stretches to try it out.
Good as new.
âIn your dreams.â
Talem growled and rushed towards her, but Aurea was prepared. The tree toppled under her blow, but the human was left safe and sound.
âAre you gonna start fighting back, or are you just gonna waste everyoneâs time again?â Came another taunt.
âIâll fight back when you start taking this fight seriously!â She shot back.
There was another growl and another blow, âIâm trying not to kill you, you idiot.â
âWell then stop,â Aurea shouted, âIâm your opponent! Treat me as such!â
âFine!â She shouted and the rumble she heard was not of a growl, but of thunder. Talemâs eyes glowing an unnatural blue.
Now for every swing of Talemâs fist there came a strike of lightning, and as fast as Aurea was, she couldnât dodge lightning.
It seared her skin and made her muscles twitch with every hit, but she kept her prayer strong, healing her body faster than Talem could harm it.
She just had to keep it steady. Look for an opening. Wait for the perfect moment, for when Talemâs rage reached its peak.
Gods above what was she doing?Â
Fighting a massive troll, imbued with the power of the storms, in some random forest, in the middle of the night.Â
Why did she think this was a good idea?Â
Talem lifted her fist again, crackling with energy.Â
That was it. It was now or never. Even in her rage, there was no way she would fall for this trick a second time.
This time when lighting struck, she was ready, her blade was lifted up into the air, the metal attracting the electricity. The sword heated up in her hands and an arc formed between it and Talemâs body. It was a terrifying amount of power contained in the small space between them.
And then she swung her sword.Â
The arc shot back, sending Talem flying backwards and burning a pair of trees next to her.
There was a quick prayer. A wish for good luck. Pleading that her plan would go exactly as she wanted.
The trees cracked and toppled, one landing perfectly over Talem.Â
Aurea couldnât believe it.Â
Sure, her prayers of healing were always answered. She was a channel to the godsâ benevolence.Â
But to have something so small, so silly, so selfish, be answered. It was a sign that this is what the gods wanted her to be doing.
She rushed over as fast as her tired legs would let her and placed a single foot on the trollâs chest, the tip of her blade coming to rest under her chin.
âReady to give up?â Aurea echoed.
âIn your dreams,â Talem shot back, but with her good arm caught under a tree she could not push herself free of Aureaâs foot.
âAnd thatâs three!â Cendis declared loudly, âAurea is the victor of this trollâs duel!â
She let out a breath she had been holding and took her foot off of Talem.
âOh you lucky little shit!â Talem shouted as she continued to struggle her way out.
âLuck or not the victory is still mine,â Aurea challenged again.
âShe does have a point, you know,â Cendis commented, lifting the tree off of her friend.
âSeriously?â She asked as she sat up, earning herself only a glowing red glare from the giant, âokay, okay,â she grumbled before turning to face Aurea, âIâm sorry for mistreating you all this time.â
âAnd?â Talum added.
âAnd you're not a burden to this team.â
âAnd?â Cendis added again.
âAnd Iâve been a hard headed jackass this whole time,â she snarled, âare you happy now?â
Aurea couldnât help but giggle a little at that, âactually I was already happy with just the apology, but since youâre feeling so kind, maybe you could be the one to carry me through all those waters.â
Talem glared at her and for a moment that blue spark returned to her eyes, but it soon relented.
âFine, I guess you deserve that much,â she sighed, and pushed herself up to her feet, âbut Iâm gonna want a rematch later.â
âAs trolls get higher up on the hemospectrum, they become more durableâ actually just statistical error. clowns gamzee, who lives in the vents and tanks multiple minutes of machine gun fire and only slows down, is an outlier adn should not have been counted
What do you think trolls from other country's would like look since we see lot of different race of trolls like Gatto and the Quagawumps?
Oooooh I seem to be getting some interesting asks recently! I really like this question!
Definitely, 100% certain that the region influences the variety of troll species we've seen in Canon. I think Mexican trolls for example would have feathers rather than fur, and in the past have been mistaken as gods.
African trolls have mottled stone patterns, in sandy/brown colouration and really impressive manes.
I think Vendel might be a mountain troll, or half-mountain troll. And not in the way of Gatto, I'd consider him a Jotner. Maybe related to Jötunheimr, but instead of a frost giant a volcanic 'giant'.
So nordic countries such as Denmark, Sweden and all that are home to the bigger troll species, the 'giants' if you will. They aren't the prettiest, but their fur is like ice, fur and feathers all mixed into one.
And there are Centaur-like trolls in Egypt and deep sea trolls in the Atlantic. Because I really think that would be awesome. I know they're made of Stone, but it's magic so maybe they are made of lighter/weaker stone and going to the surface is risky since the pressure could crumble their skin.
