To hold the element of surprise, one must know what they’re capable of beforehand! As such, Saerno is definitely aware of what goes into every incantation he speaks, and every dagger he thrusts. In fact, he often draws upon the other when he is performing one in particular! When casting, especially in the case he is doing so without a grimoire, his athleticism is key in avoiding trouble as well as in going through the runic motions necessary to perform a spell. And when fighting in melee range, the use of simple spells to augment his own movements and weapons does wonders in covering the weaknesses the short range of a dagger imposes.
As for when he’s especially pushed into the corner, there’s one last ace up his sleeve, but that’s a secret that Saerno isn’t keen on letting others know.
New to the world of blade-wielding and combat in general, Luo Qiang’s technique is drawn solely from his own experiences, ones that are VERY limited. While his swings, posture and footing are all that of a novice, his blows are alarmingly powerful. As for where it comes from, well, he isn’t even aware of the potent nature behind his swings. To others, it’s just as confusing. The young man’s not a bulging mass of muscle, and his blade seems to be simple enough, so what exactly could it be?
In being so affirmed in his actions and goals, his conviction drives his every movement. In short, it’s the power of anime!...
Jokes aside, his surprising prowess is a product of something I mentioned in an earlier response - his absolute focus in combat. Through his ability to fixate upon goals and ability to tune out distractions, it is not only Luo Qiang’s mind that is focused, but his qi and aether as well. However, in being unaware of such a process, and being a newcomer to the art of swordplay, these focused energies are not used efficiently, and often end up being expended quickly, randomly, and destructively, with Luo Qiang almost always ending up completely fatigued.
