!!content under the cut!!
c/w - spoilers of ztt (haro mentions + surveillance cameras inside the house); maybe a little bit ooc
a/n - alternatively here are some not at all self-indulgent headcanons i have of father figure!rei because i dont have one in my life he's cool and i started yumeing him as a joke and now he is. very much in my brain.,,,,, also this was meant to be in a somewhat chronological order but that died very quickly so um. anyway onto the headcanons!!
let me start by saying that i don't think rei would willingly look after a child, because other than conan he doesn't really see a point? not to mention, he knows he can't commit to fully looking after another person (i would imagine he barely manages with haro)
that doesn't mean he's not going to try, because furuya rei is a stubborn man who Will finish any task assigned to him.
he's horribly protective - some could argue overprotective, but could you really blame him? he's lost far too many people close to him, and he absolutely cannot lose you too. he's fussy and can helicopter you if he's not being careful, so you may have to tell him - he's not used to this, to looking after someone other than himself (not that he does a very good job of that either COUGH anyway).
he's fairly strict as a parent, though he's not unreasonable. there's quite a lot of house rules regarding police files and especially organisation files, and under no circumstances does he want you to read them. sometimes, though, he'll ask for your input on a case, he likes picking at your brain (and grinning cockily because he's solved the case already but he wants to see if you can also solve it).
speaking of the organisation, rei doesn't tell you about bourbon for a Very long time, if at all. he doesn't want you to know the much darker side of him (not to say that his psb side isn't dark either), but he would much rather keep you out of organisation business and he never mentions you to anyone else, not even vermouth (especially vermouth).
you and rei don't get to spend too much time together; with you at school and rei working three jobs, it becomes almost impossible for the two of you to at least spend dinner together. he apologises, he really does, god he wishes he could at least have a day off - the psb and poirot allow it, but the organisation unfortunately does not.
rei worries. he worries a lot. he doesn't mean to be controlling or come off as creepy or stalkerish ("but furuya-san this is a little different to haro's cams..." "kazami." "don't you think this is at least a little bit creepy..." "kazami, i need to keep an eye on them."), but for the first few months of you two living together, he installs cameras to keep an eye on you. he's worried, he's scared, he's not entirely sure why (it's just for the mission and he wants it to go well but there's something else there that he can't quite name).
he really tries his best to not be the father who went out to get milk and never returned, he wants to be present in your life, and he knows he shouldn't be making excuses, but it's hard. he's distant (he knows he shouldn't be), he's cold (it's only a mission, other than that he has no other obligation to look after you). but he tries. and he'll ultimately fail, because he comes to the realisation that he does, in fact, care about you.
he teaches you self-defence. he knows that he won't always be around to help you or protect you (if he could run to you in a heartbeat and do so he would, he swears), and the last thing he wants is for you to get hurt. he doesn't want to hurt you too badly during training, but he is a very harsh and strict teacher, he's seen what happens to those who aren't careful and he doesn't want you to end up like them.
good luck trying to hide literally anything from him, because he Will find out. he studied in the academy, he's been undercover for many years now, he's a skilled detective, he knows when someone is lying, and he's incredibly observant: he knows your little habits and quirks and though he may not be quick to point them out initially, but he'll make mental notes and corner you. he's not too fond of asking indirectly or beating around the bush, he wants to know, and you trust him... right?
he takes you out on late night drives in his mazda when you're exhausted, it's a way for the two of you to connect and have some father-child bonding time. sure, maybe it'll be incredibly late when he comes back from work, and maybe it's not really the best idea to drive with your kid when you're maybe supposed to be in bed sleeping or reviewing footage and files, but hey, a few hours wouldn't hurt, right?
when you're of age, he'll teach you to drive. of course, he can be (a little) reckless when driving, teasing the speed limit occasionally flashbacks to m22, but he ensures that you do not break any laws because breaking laws is illegal and bad and he wants you to stay safe (he really doesn't want (or need, for that matter) a phone call from yumi about a lecture on road safety) and the last thing he needs is for you to be coming home with injuries or worse, for you to not come home at all).
sometimes, not always, but sometimes he'll (reluctantly) ask kazami to come over to babysit you (and haro). yes, he knows that you technically don't need a babysitter, that you're a little too old to have one, but he's not hearing it (he is, he just refuses to listen because he's stubborn like that).
rei rarely loses his temper with you, he tries to be as patient as possible - you're allowed to have your own secrets, to do your own thing, to be your own person - and he tries to give you as much freedom as possible, he tries to remember that you're your own person, and that he cannot be controlling in any way shape or form.
it takes him a Very long time, if at all, for him to mention anything regarding the other wps boys (especially hiro), and honestly he doesn't know if he wants to. he's hinted at them a few times, and he wonders sometimes how they would react now seeing him as a father figure in your life. and they've definitely influenced him in how he takes care of you. of course, maybe he'll be a little more willing to tell you about them and take you to their graves sometime when you're a little older.
he won't force you to come to poirot during your free time, it's only a recommendation (he swears up and down that it's only a recommendation and you don't have to come) but he's not going to complain if you come to poirot. he's memorised your usual orders and favourite drinks, and he ignores azusa's confused protests of it not being on the menu - he doesn't care if it isn't, he will ask the manager to make a special exception for you.

i said this on my bsky but i love how the fandom (me included, by the way) has silently agreed (from what ive seen) that rei loves his mazda and would kill a man if anything happened to it and then this is him in canon:
