 superman’s drifting descend down the side of the building is quiet, boots coming into view from up above until he drops low enough to have his face sit in the center of the open window. 

“hello,” he says with a little wave, careful so as to not startle, donning a smile that’s both friendly and apologetic as a hand comes to rest on the windowsill. 

it’s a little bit unusual. he’s not even nightwing, that’s the part that sucks. and it’s not like dick has never been kidnapped before, but bruce is...very much off-planet. which means the appeals to any ransom were going unheard. so dick figured he could...bust himself out. and he has, pretty successfully, actually. he’s not even hurt - couple bruises from when they tried to make a point on camera, and some bruised wrists. that’s it.

he’s just in the middle of nowhere. in a suit. gross.

he scrolls through several contacts -- busy, on a case, off-world, on a case, on a case, on a -- and then hits barney’s name without much hesitation.

⁕—-» All right, in fairness, Barney’s first attempt at pun humor hadn’t gone over well with the engineer. Puns were always a hit-or-miss sort of humor and in Tony’s experience, people seemed to love them, hate them, or tolerate them at best, but there wasn’t much wiggle room for anything else. Personally, he hovered around the ‘tolerate’ area, though his own brand of humor really didn’t align well with a bad pun, or even a good pun. If Tony ever let one slip, it’d be worth recording and posting on the internet to be immortalized for all of eternity.

So, when Barney opened his mouth for another stab at a good-bad pun, Tony could already feel the eye roll coming on. He wasn’t going to give up until he got Tony to laugh, was he? Or was he trying to annoy him instead, he wondered?

The pun, though, had Tony freezing mid-eye roll, because it was actually a good one. Science related humor was hard to come by and even harder to make legitimately funny. He was almost mad at himself for actually letting the chuckle fall from his lips, even if he shook his head as he laughed in hopes of playing off his amusement as semi-annoyed chuckles.

“Well, you’re not wrong,” Tony pointed out, half-smirking. “You really had to take a jab at the science jokes, didn’t you? Couldn’t resist, huh? Better be careful, or I might actually start falling for you...r bad puns.” 

            u’s trouble.

    clint scowls at her as they come up on barney, and he hauls his way up the haybale. it’s his shift to feed the livestock and he’ll get to it, damnit, but for one minute he wants a moment to breathe. buck’s got him shootin’ left, right and center and damn if that doesn’t pull an ache into his shoulders.

                     ...but he’s getting good.

   ‘dead tired’ he signs to barney, and then deafnames him because he thinks he’s funny and barney’s name looks like a visual insult. u chirps loudly, stepping over to barney’s raccoon daemon. she makes a noise that sounds like a purr that clint has always thought of as a zoot (when his hands are on her, when there’s no way for him to hear, that’s how it feels when she’s vibratin’ like that), and makes a general scene about wanting to have attention.

        she’s trouble.

                                   “u almost touched buck,” he mumbles aloud. it’s nice n’ all to be able to talk to his brother in ways that people can’t find the means to understand, but his hands are sore in ways that he’s never known. his fingers, particularly the ones he uses to draw his tension, throb. “i swear i thought’d his head was ‘boutta pop off.” his gut wails for a sandwich; the sloppy kind that their madame voodoo has been making lately but he ignores it like a champ. 

         ‘i wouldn’ta really touched him!’ u insists as she breaks her facade and lunges for barney’s daemon. clint ignores her and slumps his slopey shoulders into barney’s.

“ Are you done ? You couldn’t just say thank you, or  something nice in return ? ”     Brows rose, & she finally opened her tiny package of sugar that she dropped in her coffee, & mixed it in.      “ That’s how damaged you are ? All right. ”      The blonde took a sip, leaned over the table across Barney,      “ You really want me to say it, uh ? ”    Sly smile danced over closed lips,      “ Fine, fine... You’re not that bad. Yes, your brother is getting all the awards, but you’re a good man Barney.”     Her blue eyes settled on his features, taking in the sight of one perplex face.       “ We can wash off your past, you could become someone else if you’d like to. ”     She rose her hands before her & frowned, knowing it sounded the opposite of her own thoughts about him,    “ No no, that’s not what I mean, you know, you could be that good man twenty four seven without getting cops behind your butt all the time. ” 

"So you always tease your government tails with three hour coffee shop visits or am I just a special case?"

     AND THEY WERE SEATED IN SAID COFFEE SHOP AGAIN. But this time, they were at the same table having a conversation, not one looking ‘pon another from a distance. Some visit that was, indeed.

     The one syllable stopped there for a long moment of silence, twinkle in his eyes watching, waiting for Barney’s reaction, looking for any awkwardness, confusion, or surprise… before he continued with a trained seriousness, leaning back in his seat, ❝You’re a very special person, Barney.❞
