Saw this on my morning dog walk, and I'm amazed I haven't noticed before:
That is a Doug Fir sapling growing out of a cherry tree. Look at it:
It's growing out of what was once a bad pruning cut. Someone took a branch off, and it was either large enough that the tree couldn't heal over before it rotted, or they cut into the branch collar which slowed the healing. A Doug Fir seed was lucky enough to find that rotten wood and started growing. I really wonder what the inside of the cherry trunk looks like.
