I spend my week here.
My happy place
I've been reading Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer while I'm off work due to a health issue, and I'm doing a lot of thinking about how to give back to ecosystems that are sustaining you. Kimmerer recounts many experiences of giving tobbaco when harvesting a foraged food, or ways you can help plant and animal populations thrive, but I'm a city dweller a long distance from the sources of my food. However, I do have a big ass black walnut tree in my back yard that provides the most amazing shade, keeping the yard cool and pleasant on days where you could fry an egg on the sidewalk.
I don't know how to thank the tree for the shade it gives me, or the massive crop of edible (with a bit of hard work) walnuts that it gives out freely every fall (a mixed blessing, but part of our relationship). The tree needs nothing from me; it has stood next to my house for around a century. We had it trimmed when we moved in, which seemed to make the canopy even thicker, but that only needs doing every several years. Still, I want to show my tree that I care.
Giving tobacco isn't in my cultural heritage, but a thanksgiving more likely to have been carried out by my ancestors is wassailing. This is something normally done at the dark of the year, around Christmas or New Year's, and usually takes the place of singing and feeding the tree. I don't know any wassail songs for nut trees, wassail being traditionally a fruit tree activity, but nuts are, I suppose, a kind of fruit, and I do know a wassail for apple trees, so today, I put my arms around a thick, shoulder height limb of the black walnut tree and sang it an apple tree wassail. I don't know if the tree liked it or not, but right afterwards, a bright red cardinal alighted above my head, so that felt like a good sign.
Northern California is so beautiful, thought I would share some pictures i took there :)

tree hugger
i know it’s common sense and also nobody really uses the phrase anymore but literally how was treehugger ever an insult. i don’t even hug trees myself but what is there to poke fun at about just..loving the world you live in? caring about other forms of life from you? forms of life that benefit you no less? humans really really need to remember that we’re animals just as much as the next species and we’re part of nature too, not above it. let’s just bring back treehugging honestly.
