The Treaty Bill will also ensure that the First Peoples’ Assembly is consulted by the state government on legislation affecting Aboriginal people – because when it comes to Aboriginal communities, cultures, and lands, the experts have always been Aboriginal people.'

Members of the Kitselas First Nation in British Columbia's Skeena Valley region have voted to become self-governing. The nation said in a news release that more than 96 per cent of its enrolled voters took part in the ratification on Thursday. It said 85 per cent voted for the treaty, while 81 per cent voted "Yes" for its constitution.

This week, the Law School hosted representatives of Uppsala University and the Uppsala University Faculty of Law to celebrate the faculty and student exchange program between the two law schools, which began in 1982. This year also marks the 25th anniversary of the Sister City relationship between Uppsala and Minneapolis.

We were delighted to be presented with this very thoughtful gift and a wonderful addition to the collection: a Swedish copy (1785) of the treaty signed between the United States and Sweden in 1783. The Treaty of Amity and Commerce Between the United States and Sweden (Wånskaps och handels tractat emellan Hans Maj:t konungen af Swerige och the Fo̊rente Staterne i Norra America) made Sweden "the first power in Europe which had voluntarily and without solicitation offered its friendship to the United States." Benjamin Franklin signed the treaty, establishing commerce and friendship with Sweden, several months before the end of the American Revolution when he was serving as the US representative in Paris.

February 13th 1462 saw the Treaty of Westminster-Ardtornish between the Lord of the Isles and Edward IV, the King of England.

This was an agreement proposed that if Scotland was conquered by England, the lands beyond the Scottish sea - beyond the Firth of Forth - would be divided between the Lord of the Isles and the Earl of Douglas to be held from the crown of England, and the Earl of Douglas would hold Scotland south of the Firth.

His kinsman Donald Balloch of Dunnyvaig and the Glens and the forfeited Earl of Douglas were to get the rest of the country between them. Their greed seems to have only been exceeded by their naivety and stupidity!

The treaty is a remarkably vague document considering the risks John was prepared to take, saying nothing about the nature, scale and timing of English support. For King Edward however, it was a brilliant diplomatic coup. He achieved maximum results at minimum expense, laying out only as much bait as necessary to create a political disturbance in Scotland. When it suited them, the treaty was revealed to the Scottish government by the English themselves, with the immediate result that John of Islay lost the Earldom of Ross, and the eventual result that in 1493, the Lordship of the Isle s was forfeited as well.
