The NHL: weβre banning pride tape
Travis Dermott: no youβre not
The NHL: no weβre not
The way some of ya'll talk about the money that pro athletes make betrays a fundamental misunderstanding of how any of this works. Absolutely they're not living in poverty or paycheck to paycheck. But they are still people who exchange labour for capital, the vast majority of them are closer to being just like us than they are to being like the billionaires who pay them.
They spend their entire lives being very good at one thing at the sacrifice of education or a backup plan. They exchange their health and physical well-being for that paycheck. If their careers ended tomorrow, most of them would NOT "be fine". The ones on short term (comparatively to their peers) lower paying contracts do NOT have financial or job security.
This is a labour rights issue!! If you watch sports and are entertained by the labour these people provide it's actually insane to dismiss people who point out the relative lack of security that some of these people have! You're not being smart and you're not being progressive
A celebration of Arizona and Travis Dermott

Some hockey team should just go "fuck it" and wear pride-themed warm up jerseys even though it is not allowed
There is precedent of the NHL folding like a wet paper towel when even ONE person is like "lol, I'll do it anyway". Really:
Literally ONE person does it anyway and 72 hours later, using pride tape is allowed again. Also, it looks cool as fuck:
[Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl of the Edmonton Oilers using pride tape]
And the pride jerseys (worn during warmups, so they could be sold for charity as worn by the players!) looked cool as fuck as well:
[Black shirt (front and back): Golden Knights. White shirt on the left: Anaheim Ducks. White shirt on the right: San Jose Sharks]
BRING BACK PRIDE THEMED JERSEYS!
π³οΈβπ Pride tape on hockey sticks π Travis Dermott taking a stand (2023) for the right thing
"Then-Philadelphia defenceman Ivan Provorov was the first player to skip warmups in January when the Flyers wore rainbow-coloured jerseys before their Pride night game, citing his Russian Orthodox religion. A half-dozen NHLers followed for a variety of reasons, while some teams decided against donning Pride jerseys altogether. Dermott was happy to grab the attention this time. "Never been the rebellious type," he said. "A lot of guys get on the front of the newspaper for the wrong reasons. "But in talking with my family, this definitely isn't something my daughter would be ashamed of when she's old enough to understand."
"This got laid out in front of me," he said. "And with the amount that I care about [the LGBTQ]Β community and the amount of ties that I had before doing this, and now the amount of people that have come out of the woodwork saying that this affected them in a way that I didn't even think was possible ... it lets you know it was probably the right move." It was also a risk. Dermott inked a one-year, two-way contract for close to the league minimum in Arizona this summer after an injury-ravaged 2022-23 season with the Vancouver Canucks.
"Not like I've really established myself β signed a long-term deal β and because of that was comfortable doing this," he said. "Definitely some anxious moments where I wasn't sure how it would impact my career. I had crazy ideas going through my head like, 'Am I going to get kicked out of the league? Are they going to fine me? Am I going to get suspended?' Really didn't know what the repercussions could be."" Source: CBC
This was in 2023.
A pro athlete who is married with a wife, and wants to be a role model for his daughter, in a world where she will grow up and he wants to earn respect, do the right thing. π
I am new to hockey and NHL politics, but as far as I can see, the contract on that team did not get extended and he is not in a widely-known or super-successful team anymore. π
Imagine him getting the same treatment our beloved Rachel Reid characters got from the NHL commissioner. π€
