Transition Tuesday! The person on the left never thought that they would ever get to the point where they could finally be themselves! That was 32 years ago, during my first year of Public School teaching! It was only a year or two later that I seriously considered transitioning, but I knew that I would end my teaching career if I did. I don't do #TransitionTuesday posts super often, but I remember this photo from when I took it. I was in so much pain, and I didn't know why. The left is 3 years ago this week, and the right is today. . Back then it was so rare for me to take a picture with me in it, especially one where I am trying to smile. I hated how I looked, and had always tried to be the one taking the picture, not the one in it. . Now, I don't hate how I look and feel, so I actually enjoy getting my picture taken, both as a #TranstitionTimeline, and to show people that being trans is not just suffering. There is pain, and hurt, and bigotry...but there is also love, and joy, and euphoria. . It's #nationalcomingoutday, and I don't know if the "national" refers to America or to us peasants in the rest of the world, but either way it's worth making note of. . I rarely make these #transitiontuesday type posts because I don't want the focus of what I'm doing here to be on my looks. But at the same time, I've been told that transition timeline photos can be inspiring for people who haven't yet taken that leap. . The time in between your egg cracking and you taking the plunge can be absolutely terrifying, and for many it's nearly impossible to see the person you were meant to be when you're so early in your transition. But time makes a huge difference. . Changing hormones, learning new ways of being, new ways to speak, new forms of body language, etc. can make an incredible difference in your life. . You might not guess that that big hairy dude on the right could become the lady on the left, but that's exactly what happened. Transitioning is a mixed bag of course, and your results will vary. But you might be surprised at your own results. . Transitioning is scary and frustrating all at once. I can't tell you to do it, because it's your life. But I can say that for me it was the best decision I ever made, in spite of the losses along the way. . At the same time, there's no perfect time to start, which is why things like National Coming Out Day are nice. There are always reasons to convince yourself not to transition, but if the question keeps nagging at you it's unlikely to ever go away. This is my first #transitiontuesday 😊 I still can’t quite believe how much has changed 🥰 I really felt like it was time to show what HRT has done for me, as I constantly see who I am now and forget how far I’ve come. I can finally say ‘well done dead-name, you’ve got to where you’ve always wanted to be!😊’ I want to share too as we all face #transphobia in different ways and I want to share that being trans isn’t all peaches and rainbows - We take a brunt of hate and I want to share a recent event that happened to me. I had an appointment with my GP to discuss some poor handling of my care, basically awful behaviour with no excuse without going to much into detail. In this meeting this GP made an awful personal comment on my appearance to try and hurt me as he had taken my complaint very personally for no other reason than I can see as simply being transphobic. He would never have made this comment to a cis woman, but no because I’m a #transwoman it’s obviously fine /sarcasm. 😅 The comment my GP made out the blue goes: - ‘I would have recognised you from before transitioning and anyone else would too you don't look that different so we all know it's you, do you actually think you look any different to 'him'? As realistically you need to expect still looking exactly like 'him' people are gonna know it's you whether you like it or not’ - in a nasty arrogant tone sitting back in his seat looking proud of what he said.. basically suggesting that I still look like a man but in woman’s clothing. 😔 It really really hurt, even though I knew it wasn’t true and he was just trying to get a reaction (which he didn’t get a reaction off me luckily for me) it still hurt like hell and has really stuck with me for the last few weeks. 😞 Long story short coming across this picture of me from this time last year has really made me realise that no, my GP was completely wrong and out of line for making such a nasty personal comment on my appearance. And some small-minded village GP is not going to take that away!
