Brighton UK 2019 🇬🇧 Van update: End of the road for this van and probably the end of a dream for me. Had an accident before Christmas and have been waiting for the insurance assessment. Fortunately no one was hurt in the crash. This week the insurance company has decided the damage is too severe and it is not repairable! Brighton UK 2019 🇬🇧 Van update: Ceiling lights now installed and working (off the starter battery for now). Applied a couple of coats of yacht varnish to the ceiling before installing the lights which has given the wood a rich, yellow colour, darker than I would have liked but I think the waterproofing layer will be worth it. Also managed to complete the head boards for the bed and coat them in yacht varnish. Brighton UK 2019 🇬🇧 Van update: More pics of the roof panelling. Was considering staining the panels a slightly darker colour but think I may leave them natural now, they do give the van a nice light feel. Brighton UK 2019 🇬🇧 Van update: Finally finished the roof, apart from the edging strips of course. All the cladding panels are locked together and screwed into place, and the wiring for the lighting is hidden behind them. Was a huge struggle as the shape of the Transit Custom’s roof is more akin to a barrel and the panels just don’t bend two ways! Anyway, its as best as I can get it for now. Brighton UK 2019 🇬🇧 Van update: Midi Heki is now in and insulated around it. Wiring for the lights now in place and cracking on with the roof cladding. The front strips have all been individually soaked in the bathtub and shaped in the lounge by resting a couple of campingaz 207 cylinders and a leisure battery on them overnight! Had a lot of breakages! Brighton UK 2019 🇬🇧 Van update: This is the finished product from the outside, not the most beautiful of roof vents but functional none the less. I’m not a big fan of the new style midi heki as I think the old clear plastic one was less visible on the roof, this one makes the van look like an industrial refrigeration van. Can’t fault the aerodynamics of it though, I have not felt any difference to the handling of the van or the fuel consumption. Brighton UK 2019 🇬🇧 Van update: Midi Heki is now in! The neat parallel lines drawn on the roof turned into jagged and wonky cuts as the power saw ate through the tin roof. A bit of angle grinding was needed to widen some areas, it was not a pretty job. Eventually the roof vent fitted, so I painted the edges of the hole to stop it rusting, about three coats did the trick, the last two probably overkill as I was not taking any chances. I applied the sikafix, put the roof vent in for the last time and rigged up a couple of wood planks on the top of the opening and tied them to three gas bottles raised just above the floor. This I hoped would be sufficient weight on the top of the roof vent to hold it in place until the sikafix set. I then screwed the attachment brackets into the vent and the wooden brackets, and broke two screw heads in the process, had to improvise with some washers to get the whole thing secure. All set now and has not leaked yet. Brighton UK 2019 🇬🇧 Van update: The time has come to cut a whopping great big chunk out of the roof and replace it with a midi heki roof vent. All that is needed is courage, lots of it, and some mains power. So far I have completed all tasks using hand tools or a rechargeable drill, time now to break out the big guns.
