Lesson Of The Day
Why the word "retard" is offensive and it's history
Woah so, this is cool and I'm going to use this for todays lesson.
To begin with, the word retard is offensive nowadays as it is used a slur to devalue people, typically those with intellectual or developmental disabilities. The word is often used to stereotype such beings as being dumb or lesser than. Personally I would also call it ableist due to the usage of the term. It has been classified as a slur due to this usage being hateful and discrimatory, it also enables bullying and contributes to teasing and exclusion amongst children. I highly recommend checking out websites like the special olympics for more information regarding the term.
Now as for me being reblogged by them, personally I'm not offended, it would be idiotic to be offended by such a simple act. Besides, any publicity is good publicity if you have the right connections. However the term would be severely inaccurate regardless of how you try and swing it for I am neither dumb nor do I have a intellectual or developmental disability, and this goes for our system as a whole. I'm afraid our IQ is definitely not average or even below it.
Thank you for being a wonderful example to my lesson today, I greatly appreciate it. Making light and advocating for disabilities is very important when you live in a world that's actively hostile against people with disabilities.
