Moving day with Longshot involved significantly less moving and significantly more chaos than you expected.
You shouldâve known better the moment Woojin showed up carrying absolutely nothing except iced coffee for himself.
Now Louis was sitting inside one of the empty cardboard boxes scrolling through his phone like he paid rent there, Ryul was âorganizingâ snacks by eating them, and Ohyul was currently fighting for his life trying to carry a shelf through the doorway.
âTurn it sideways,â you called out from the kitchen.
âI am turning it sideways,â Ohyul argued back immediately.
âItâs upside down,â Ryul said without even looking up.
Ohyul stopped moving.
ââŠOh.â
Louis burst out laughing from inside the box.
You pinched the bridge of your nose.
This apartment wasnât getting unpacked until next year at this rate.
âOkay,â you sighed, grabbing your keys from the counter. âIâm going back to the old place to grab the last boxes.â
Ohyul looked up instantly. âWant me to come?â
âNo. Suffer with them.â
Woojin pointed at you dramatically. âShe abandoned you, bro.â
âYou havenât touched a single box,â Ohyul shot back.
âIâm supervising.â
âYouâre eating chips.â
âExactly.â
Your old room felt strange now.
Empty.
Quiet.
The posters were gone. The shelves looked too clean. Even the mirror where you used to practice choreography during trainee days felt unfamiliar without sticky notes and schedules taped around the edges.
You crouched beside your old desk, pulling open the bottom drawer to check for anything left behind.
Old papers.
Practice evaluations.
Expired lip balm.
Then your fingers brushed against a black notebook buried beneath a pile of trainee schedules.
Your stomach dropped instantly.
âNo wayâŠâ
You slowly pulled it out.
The tiny stickers decorating the corners made recognition hit immediately.
Your trainee journal.
More specificallyâ
your Ohyul crush journal.
âOh my god.â
You opened one page cautiously.
Ohyul smiled at me during practice today and I forgot the entire choreography for eight seconds.
You flipped another page.
Why does he smell so good all the time????
Your soul nearly left your body.
âNope.â
The journal snapped shut immediately.
This thing needed to disappear forever.
Preferably into a fire.
âWhatcha got there?â
You physically jumped.
Woojin stood in the doorway carrying a box under one arm, eyes narrowing the second he noticed the notebook clutched against your chest.
âNothing.â
âThat sounded suspicious.â
âItâs private.â
âThat sounded more suspicious.â
Before you could react, Woojin lunged forward and snatched the journal right out of your hands.
âWOOJIN.â
âOh this is definitely something embarrassing.â
âGive it back right now.â
He dodged you easily, already flipping through pages while you tried grabbing it from him.
Then he suddenly froze.
A slow grin spread across his face.
âOhhhhh.â
Your stomach dropped.
âNo.â
âOh this is BAD.â
âWOOJIN.â
Unfortunately, Louis walked in at the exact worst moment possible.
âWhat happened?â
Woojin looked up with pure evil in his eyes.
Then he read aloud dramatically:
âOhyul fixed my mic pack today and accidentally touched my hand. I think I died.â
Silence.
Then Louis folded in half laughing.
âNO WAY.â
You covered your face instantly.
âPlease kill me.â
âOh she was DOWN HORRENDOUS,â Woojin wheezed.
âSTOP READING.â
Too late.
Ryul wandered into the room holding a bag of gummies. âWhy are yâall screaming?â
Woojin shoved the journal toward him immediately.
âRead page thirty-two.â
Ryul skimmed a few lines before choking on air.
âOh my god.â
You were going to move countries.
Actually no.
You were going to move planets.
Ryul started reading dramatically while Louis collapsed against the wall beside him.
âIf he sits beside me during evaluations again I might actually pass away.â
Louis screamed.
âTHIS IS SO CUTE.â
âItâs not cute,â you argued weakly. âItâs psychological warfare.â
Ryul flipped another page.
Then another.
âOh my god there are little hearts everywhere.â
âGive me the notebook.â
âNo because look at this oneââ
He cleared his throat dramatically.
âHe wore black today. I need to stay focused.â
The room exploded again.
You lunged for the journal while Woojin physically held you back.
âI hate every single one of you.â
âNo you donât,â Louis laughed.
âMaybe not him.â
You pointed at Ryul specifically.
Ryul ignored you completely and flipped another page.
Then his eyes widened.
âOh this oneâs CRAZY.â
âNo.â
âYes.â
He held the notebook up proudly.
âFuture me, if you somehow end up dating Ohyul⊠donât mess it up.â
The room went insane.
Louis literally fell into the cardboard box laughing.
Woojin was crying.
And you?
You were seconds away from evaporating from embarrassment.
Right then, the front door opened.
âBabe, where do these boââ
Your boyfriend stopped mid-sentence.
His eyes moved slowly across the room.
Louis dying inside a box.
Ryul holding your journal.
Woojin trying not to scream.
You looking ready to commit homicide.
ââŠWhat happened?â
The silence lasted exactly one second.
Then Woojin pointed aggressively at you.
âShe was catastrophically in love with you.â
Your soul ascended.
Ohyul blinked slowly. âWhat?â
âDONâT TELL HIM.â
Ryul ignored you completely.
âHe asked if I ate dinner today. Marriage material honestly.â
Ohyulâs ears immediately turned red.
âOh my god,â you whispered, horrified.
Louis pointed at him instantly. âLOOK AT HIS FACE.â
âIâm fine,â Ohyul said way too quickly.
âBroâs blushing.â
âIâm NOT blushing.â
âYou literally are.â
Meanwhile, Ryul had no intention of stopping.
âIf Ohyul ever likes me back, Iâll literally faint.â
This time even Ohyul laughed.
Actually laughed.
Head lowered, shoulders shaking, smile completely uncontrollable.
And somehow that made everything worse.
âYouâre enjoying this way too much.â
âIâm trying not to,â he admitted.
âYou failed.â
âOh absolutely.â
Woojjn grabbed the journal again and kept flipping through pages while you sat there dying quietly.
Every embarrassing trainee memory suddenly came back at once.
The tiny interactions that used to keep you awake at night.
The way you memorized Ohyulâs schedules accidentally.
How one compliment from him could ruin your focus for the entire day.
And apparently you documented ALL OF IT.
âOh my god,â Louis said suddenly, softer this time. âYou really liked him.â
The teasing died down just a little.
You looked away awkwardly. âYeah.â
The room grew quieter.
Because it wasnât just a silly crush back then.
You genuinely loved him long before anything happened between you two.
Ryul glanced toward Ohyul curiously.
Then narrowed his eyes.
ââŠWait.â
Ohyul immediately looked suspicious.
âNo.â
âYou liked her back too.â
The room ERUPTED again.
âOH MY GOD.â
âI KNEW IT.â
âBRO WAS WHIPPED.â
Ohyul groaned loudly. âCan you all shut up?â
Louis pointed at him accusingly. âYou used to volunteer for extra practice whenever she stayed late.â
âAnd you kept asking where she was,â Woojin added immediately.
Ryul gasped dramatically. âWAIT. You used to fix your hair every time she entered the room.â
You slowly turned toward Ohyul.
ââŠYou liked me first?â
âNo.â
âYes you did,â all three members answered instantly.
Ohyul buried his face in his hands.
Traitors.
âYou guys remember too much.â
âThatâs because you were obvious,â Louis said.
âYou stared at her during monthly evaluations,â Woojin added.
âAnd every time she complimented you, you acted weird for hours,â Ryul finished proudly.
Now it was Ohyulâs turn to look embarrassed.
And honestly?
Watching him suffer with you made this slightly better.
Slightly.
Eventually the members wandered back outside to continue âhelping,â though the laughing definitely didnât stop.
Louis pointed at the two of you while leaving.
âThis is the cutest thing Iâve ever seen.â
âGet out,â you muttered.
The room finally fell quiet once the door closed.
You still refused to look Ohyul in the eyes.
âThis is humiliating.â
âA little,â he admitted softly.
âYou were never supposed to see that journal.â
âIâm kinda glad I did.â
You peeked at him then.
His expression wasnât teasing anymore.
It was warm.
Fond.
Like he was looking at every old version of you all at once.
âYou really wrote all this?â he asked quietly.
âI was sixteen and dramatic.â
âYouâre still dramatic.â
âNot helping.â
He smiled softly before flipping carefully through the pages again.
Not to tease.
Just⊠reading.
Like the journal mattered.
Then he stopped at the page Ryul read earlier.
Future me, if you somehow end up dating Ohyul⊠donât mess it up.
Your face heated instantly again.
âOkay maybe letâs skip that one.â
But Ohyul stayed quiet.
Then he reached for a pen sitting on your old desk.
âWhat are you doing?â
Without answering, he leaned over the page and wrote something beneath your old entry.
Then he handed the journal back to you.
You didnât mess it up.I liked you first anyway.
Your chest tightened immediately.
You looked up at him in disbelief.
Ohyul just smiled shyly, rubbing the back of his neck.
âI used to look for your name on attendance sheets,â he admitted quietly.
Your jaw dropped.
âAnd whenever you missed practice, my mood got bad for the whole day.â
âWhy are you saying these things NOW?â
âBecause now itâs your turn to suffer.â
You covered your face immediately while he laughed softly.
âNo seriously,â he continued gently, pulling your hands away. âYou have no idea how nervous I used to get around you.â
âYou were terrifying.â
âI was terrified.â
âYou were literally an idol trainee.â
âAnd you were the prettiest person in the building.â
Your brain stopped functioning.
From outside the room:
âEW.â
âTHEYâRE FLIRTING NOW.â
âKEEP PACKING.â
You immediately shoved Ohyul away while he burst into laughter again.
âYour members are horrible.â
âWell, they are.â
You rolled your eyes, but your fingers still slipped naturally into his when he held his hand out toward you.
And while he carried your old journal under his arm like something precious.
Maybe trainee-you really didnât mess it up after all.

âFive, six, seven, eight, left, hop, turn around, no! Y/n youâre doing it wrong,â the dance instructor scolded.Â
âSorry Mrs. Yang,â Y/n bowed her head. She glanced around to see that all the other trainees were watching her intently, causing her to flush unintentionally.Â
Mrs. Yang sighed deeply. âIf you want to debut, youâll work on the choreography twelve hours a day! Do you hear me?â She crossed her arms.
âYes, Mrs. Yang. I was busy, I-â
âYour excuses mean nothing to me,â she scoffed. âYou either debut with Hybe or you donât debut at all. I doubt any other entertainment company would train you. Youâre not even worth the time.âÂ
âIâm sorry,â she closed her eyes tightly and bowed her head. She couldnât even bring herself to look up. âI promise to work harder.â
âYou best do so,â she sighed angrily.Â
Just then, the clock chimed. It was break time.
âI suppose Iâll see you all tomorrow for your monthly evaluation along with Mr. Won. Youâre dismissed,â she said, gesturing them all to leave.Â
All of the girls picked up their duffel bags and exited. But Y/n was stopped.
âY/n,â Mrs. Yang called.
Y/n squeezed her eyes shut before turning around. âYes?âÂ
âStart eating less. Your gaining weight, I can see it in your face,â she frowned. âMinyeon and Jinri never had trouble with their diets.â
Oh how Y/n hated being compared to the other girls. Especially regarding weight.
âYes Mrs. Yang,â she whispered, tears stinging her eyes.Â
~~~
K smiled to himself when break time came. As a part of the pre-debut group &TEAM, he had a lot on his plate. Breaks were lovely. But he also did a little happy dance on the inside at the thought of seeing his crush, Y/n. The two had known each other for two years, ever since Y/n was street casted. They weren't exactly friends though. Heck, they never really did anything but acknowledge each other's existence. But he saw her around enough to develop feelings for her. She was the brightest, kindest, cutest person he knew. How was he to admit it? Maybe soon. But not just yet.
 "Y/n!" EJ waved Y/n over to sit with his members.Â
She shyly brought her lunch over, which consisted of spicy ramen, and sat between EJ and Yuma, the only two she really knew in the group.
 "I should introduce you all. Guys, this is L/n Y/n," Yuma announced, and they all greeted her warmly. "Y/n, this is Fuma, Harua, Jo, Taki, Maki, Yihsiang, and K," he explained.
 "Hi," she waved.Â
 "Nice to meet you Y/n. I hope we can be friends," Taki smiled.
The rest of the members said kind things to Y/n, yet K remained silent. In truth, he wanted to officially meet her on his own, not with Yuma's help. It would be a terrible first impression on his crush, at least in his mind.
The clock chimed yet again, signaling it was vocal and rap practice time.
 "See you later," Maki waved at her as he and the guys left to their respective rooms.
~~~~~
Y/n collapsed on her bed in her apartment room and sighed. Her back ached terribly as she stretched. It had been a long day. Sitting up, she glanced at the mirror on the wall. She played with the strands of her messy hair and squished her cheeks, seeing how chubby they really were. And they weren't, at all. It was simply Mrs. Yang scolding Y/n every chance she got. And while Y/n didn't understand her reasons, she had grown used to it by now. Used to being humiliated in front of her trainees. And while known of these rude comments and scoldings were true, they got to her head. "What am I doing wrong," she whispered to herself before breaking down in tears.
It was another night of listening to depressing music as tears streamed down her cheeks.
~~The Next Day~~
 "Bro just tell her! I'm sick of seeing you give her puppy eyes 24/7 and not saying anything!" EJ frowned. "And I'd bet she likes you back. I mean who wouldn't? Look at you," he teased.
 "I'm not completely sure. I really want to tell her. I just don't know how," K admitted.
 "It's not like you're getting down on one knee with a diamond ring for heaven's sake! Just find a time when you're both alone with an hour or more to spare," EJ suggested.
 "Okay. Thanks EJ," K fist bumped him before going up to his room.Â
 He immediately began surfing the internet using key words: confessing to my crush. And after an hour, he had a long list.
"Okay. Be expressive, be confident, compliment her, and don't bore her. Get straight to the point," he spoke just above a whisper as he kept reading the short list over and over.
~~~~~
It all seemed like a good idea until the time actually came. He stood at the door to Y/n's practice room, unable to open the door.
"Just do it!" EJ shouted from around the corner.
 "I'll kill you if you mess this up for me!" K seethed.
With a newfound confidence, he knocked on the door. But when it opened, a crying Y/n brushed past him and went down the hall. He stood there, confused, dropping his list on accident as well. He decided to follow her for about a minute. And just when he was about to give up, he heard sniffling in his own vocal practice room. He opened the door and saw her, curled up into a ball, leaning against the same wall K had always used for physical support on the bad days. He quietly closed the door behind him and knelt beside her.Â
"Hey, you okay?" He asked softly.
 "I'll never be good enough K," she suddenly spoke. "I don't even deserve to be here."
 His gaze softened. "What? Of course you do! You're so talented Y/n."
 "Mrs. Yang she... she," she choked on her own words.
"She what Y/n?" K became curious.Â
 "She told me to leave the company, and that I'm not good enough to follow my dreams," she explained.
K could tell she was hiding something still. "What else? Just tell me the truth Y/n, it won't hurt you."
 "She got angry with me so she... hit me. She pushed me to the ground and my wrist is most likely fractured," she cried.Â
"What?!" He exclaimed, quickly getting up and running to the other side of the room. He opened a cabinet and brought out a shoulder sling. "Here," he helped her put it on, clasping it behind her back. "Try not to move too much, okay? I need to speak to Mr. Kim."
She nodded in response as he quickly exited the room.
~~~~~
 "Mr. Kim?" K knocked on his studio door.
 "Yes K?" He looked up from his desk with a smile.
 "Mrs. Yang needs to be fired. She pushed one of your trainees, Y/n to the ground and told her to leave the company," he explained, breathing heavily. "She's no good for the company."
 "I'm sorry that has happened. I'll deal with it as soon as I can. Thank you for telling me K," he smiled again before going back to his work.
~~The Next Day~~
Y/n loved having Mrs. Yang gone. She felt much more free. And her replacement, Mrs. Kwon, was an angel. Strict enough to be a good dance instructor, but as sweet and understanding as they come. But she had someone to thank for it.
"K?" Y/n knocked on his apartment door. It soon opened and she smiled at the occupant. "Hey."
 "Hey umm, would you like to come in?" He gestured to his couch area, and she accepted with a nod and a simple "thank you".Â
They both took seats next to each other before she spoke. "I just wanted to thank you for yesterday. You have no idea how grateful I am that she's gone now."
"You're welcome. Nobody deserves to be treated the way you were."
"Yeah," she smiled, before falling into silence. It looked like she still had something she wanted to say, and K read her mind.
 "You're probably wondering why I showed up at your practice room yesterday, so I might as well get straight to the point," he took a deep breath. "I think you're cute and I uh... I've had a crush on you for like a year now. I was wondering if you wanted to go out?"
 "Wow, I was going to ask you first," Y/n laughed.
"You were?"
 "Yeah, I guess you were oblivious to my obvious stares in the past year."
 "I guess I was," he chuckled.
~~~~~
Had K not had the bravery to confess, he wouldn't have been where he was right now. Sitting on top of his car, watching the sunset, with his girlfriend's head on his shoulder. "To think, today would've been our second anniversary if I said something right when I knew I liked you," K sighed.
 "At least we have each other now. Better late than never I say," Y/n picked her head up off his shoulder to see his eyes. "And I for one, wouldn't have it any other way."
 "Make it two," he smiled, before planting a short and sweet kiss on her lips.
ć§ăă!
Heeseung is a man of intricate decisionă Ąmaking and intelligent planning. He creates an experimental approach towards certain things that interest him, and when he's grown attached to this specific interest, he becomes adhered without his complete knowledge, and it makes him hesitate to venture into it publicly, but after an analytical process, he'll show it off.
For example, as of today, Heeseung's sense of style is dark, chic, and sleek. He likes to experiment and has a distinct taste that differs when dressing up and dressing down in comparison to his time in I-LAND, in which his fashion included pink Winnie the Pooh pajamas, a neon pink ripped up hoodie made by Jay, a leopard print beanie, and his one only green, blue and yellow tinted tieă Ądye shirt.
As Heeseung finds out from a fellow trainee that you took a strong liking to him, he was flabbergasted. Whenever he was in the same room, you would act as if his existence repulsed you. You would purposefully turn your head the opposite direction and continue to immerse yourself in the music your earphones delivered, or chat with your friends if they were present.
Heeseung never assumed your hatred for him would grow after his face heated up when you caught him ogling at one of the staff members.
Truly, he wasn't a sick pervert, but he hasn't seen women in so long as a trainee, and the only females to be allowed in contact with the male trainees at all times were the personnel, so the monthly evaluations that allowed all of the trainees socialization without unnecessary obligations proved useless to a boy who craved a girl's affection for so long.
That was, until he saw you with your guitar on stage, singing Never Not by LAUV, and in that instant, he knew he was in love.
Well, not necessarily in love, but the boy was whipped.
The next monthly evaluation made him more than ecstatic to put on his best clothing as of the momentă Ą hello tieă Ądye shirt and pink bear pajamasă Ą and style his hair, maybe wear a little lip tint to add to his glow. Heeseung was well aware he was handsome, absolutely, predominantly wondrous, heck, he could top a global beauty ranking no problem, but, as unbelievable as it was, it became one of his predicaments.
Heeseung never knew of your past life, or which boys you've been with, but it was harmless to comprehend your exes were fullă Ąblown assholes, and it didn't sit right with him that he resembled two of your former flames and bore a replica of their confidence.
There was nothing Heeseung was obligated to dislike about himself. He was dark, tall, and handsome. Heeseung was a multiă Ątalented male with jawă Ądropping leadership abilities, but there was one thing he couldn't master, and it was you and your unpredictable mind.
There was no challenge that Heeseung took a step back from, but when it came to you, you were always the most difficult conquest a man would ever take, and to think that you were a tiny girl who looked too innocent for her personality, he would have been the cockiest jerk alive.
Well, there was your resting bitch face, but let's move on.
Heeseung as an ace brought him diverse honors and educated him about a grateful heart, taught him how to be content and greedy all in the same. He was never too pushy with you, he has never been phony, never been disrespectful and never made comments about your body, which was his fellow male trainees' favorite hobby.
Heeseung agrees, that in the industry, a female needed to be flawless in order to be accepted, which was complete and utter bullcrap. You needed to be thin, needed to have fair skin and be obedient. You were none of those things. You weren't overweight, per say, but you had meat in all the right places, in which he was always tempted to grab, but knowing you, you weren't playing hardă Ątoă Ąget, you were hardă Ątoă Ąget, and that's what makes it the more frustrating.
Why do you have to make it so difficult? Every single approach he made, they were all futile. The hostility you place around men and pretentious females bore no idea in Heeseung's head but you labelling all men as assholes and all females that weren't as superior as you worthless was, in most aspects, unnecessary.
But he was wrong in so, so many ways. First things first, you didn't hate all men. You liked your instructors, the janitors, the language teachers, and the other higheră Ąups in the company.
Heeseung knew. Heeseung knew part of your audition was so successful was because you had the face of an artist. The face of a little starlet that would leave everyone with their jaws open. Plus, you had the skills of an allă Ąrounder, and not to mention, your caring, motherly nature towards the people you value and your strict instructions as a leader. Just like Hee, you only ever allowed yourself as a leader when needed.
Remember when Taki struggled with the FAKE LOVE UNIT, and Heeseung, being the sympathetic being he was, took over as leader because it was needed? He knew they needed a core, they needed a reliable source of both motivation and intelligence, someone creative and powerful enough to form a team and stick to the plan.
He saw all of that in you, especially when the real life replica of Regina George came running in with outlandish comments of her own. When the judges and instructors fell in love with your contemporary stage, she was out there to say, "Girl, I saw her hips, they were pads, and no wonder her vocals are always strained, she wears waist trainers and push-up bras. Quite unhealthy and desperate, if you ask me."
Heeseung was also well aware how many girls you make envious just by breathing, and he does the same to males. Heeseung wasn't a superficial guy. He was philosophical and dug deep for hidden meanings and possible underlying theories he could make craft with.
It didn't help that you were the prettiest girl he's ever seen.
You knew you were gorgeous, you knew you had the body of a bombshell and the face of a princess, but all of that to some extent, bothered you somehow. No, you weren't being a brat because you were spoiled to infinity, but because all of the attention that you gain from the ones mentioned above gave you an unfriendly conclusion towards men and all human beings that were there to ridicule ever fiber of a human being that worked within the public.
You were no ditzy tramp to objectify, and you were no little miss damselă Ąină Ądistress to be seen as a little fucktoy for nauseating men.
To make it clear, you weren't claiming all men assholes, just the ones that made you feel invalidated as a human being (especially the arrogant ones that you helplessly desired to kick in the guts).
You auditioned because you wanted to take control of your life and perform until your lungs gave up, until your limbs dangle off you body, until your heart stopped beating, until tears were no longer reproducible, not to become an eyecandy for the public. Sure, you wanted people to find you pretty, but was that all in all the most significant factor?
Because the first time you entered the training facility, all of the girls you trained with held eyeă Ąpopping beauties of their own. An example was Julia, a Koreană ĄCanadian Barbie doll that caught your eyes the moment your first training period had begun.
She was at a loss for breath and desperately needed a towel and a bottle of water. You gave her yours, reassuring that you were fine. You were a strong girl, after all. She gratefully accepted your offer and began hanging out with you after that. Another example was Winter. She was one of the most beautiful faces you've ever seen along with Jul, and she too, was half American. Heeseung thought there wasn't any reason for most of the male population right there in the same workspace with you to ogle at you like you were the first girl they've ever come across.
Leaving your country, you supposed that all the uncomfortable gawking and emulous gossips would be put to an end, but you were wrong in all ways possible. Heeseung's obvious attraction to you never once made you feel validated. He was a male, one of the sexiest asswipes you've ever seen, but were you really willing to take that risk and flirt back? Was his delightful laugh worth it to hear? Were his hopeful eyes worth it to see?
No, they weren't. And you weren't about to give him that kind of luxury. You were a tough nut to crack, and it will stay that way. No male attention will ever make you weak in the knees.
Knowing fully well that you precisely loathed his entire being, he began experimenting with his advances. First, he didn't clap for you after you've finished one of your performances for the monthly evaluation, which he always did, right at front row, eyes wide with awe.
Second, he usually sat with his friends at the cafeteria, but he decided to sit down with you instead. The girls' practice was starting soon, and since you woke up late, you were the last girl to ever eat lunch, and with all the raging male hormones around you, he had to protect what was hisă Ą okay, we're getting a little too carried away with our miniscule (massive) crush here, Hee.
He had to protect you, so he sat in front of your seat and started digging, but not before flashing you a flirtatious little smirk and a wink. The audacity of this man, and with some of the staff in the same room! What a fucking ass. Well, at least you were a risk he was willing to take. The risks he only took were the ones that included his future. You were the first and probably the only person he would ever disregard the rules for.
His heart swelled, cheeks heating up as he began to eat calmly, acting like the bland watermelon on his tray was the best thing to ever enter his mouth. Your tongue would be better, but that was reserved for another day.
The third attempt was to stop greeting you when you bumped into each other in the hallways, in which he always did despite your lack of interest. When he saw how your eyes darted over him for a split second, he knew he had finally caught your attention. The whithering hope he had of finding a love interest was finally plumping up into the tremendous size of your ass.
You were at the table next to the cashier that held up various straws, table napkins, tissues, and trays. Heeseung thought it was now or never when you leaned your back against the edge of the table and stirred your iced vanilla latte as instructed by the barista. You were with Jul and Win, and when they brought up the topic of Ethan's incredible the day prior, you almost growled with aggression.
âWill there ever be an occurrence where you cease enunciating even a syllable of his name?â You groaned, placing your coffee down the table next to you and placed your palms flat against the wooden oak, closing your eyes as you heaved a sigh.
The two evil spawns of Satan giggled in their places as their heads sparkle with mischief, a blueprint of future events that will soon commence, present in their heads. âYeah, we're sorry, babe.â Jul held your arm and did her best to at least sound apologetic. Minjeong snickered and claimed Jul's acting was rancid, but apologized cheekily in response to the latter's groan and your indiscreet eye roll.
âIsn't English your mothertongue?!â You screamed in retaliation, but they've already fled the scene with nothing but an excuse to treat you to two packets of Haribo the next morning. You crossed your arms and mumbled an âoh wellâbefore the absolute bane of your existence showed up in front of your face with a hopeful glimmer in his eyes.
You groaned, rolled your eyes, and made the decision to imitate Jul and Win before this nutcracker cod ever get a hold of a conversation with you. That didn't happen. Not at all. Once Heeseung saw your figure attempting to escape his presence, he boldly trapped you in his form, hands leaned on the table behind you, tall, broad body and long muscular arms trapping you in.
Your eyes widened, lungs squeezing with anticipation as you breathed in rapidly, the tip of his nose almost kissing your own. His cheeks lifted as the sides of his lips quirked up, his breathe fanning over your cheeks as you gripped the edge of the table with all your strength. âOpen your mouth and I'll kiss you.â
You immediately shut your mouth before it parted and looked up at his eyes with all the wonder in the world. He was the creature of your nightmares and the hero of your mental escapades. One wrong move, and you'd be sucking tongues with this utter perfection if you even allow one ounce of your selfă Ącontrol to falter.
He snickered and stared at your lips for an ample amount of time before his eyes met your own, and you swore you could have pissed yourself it weren't for the thought of your pride deteriorating. âIf you wish for a black eye that'll last for a week minimum, I suggest you leave before I grant your wish its physicality.â You rambled on, voice so soft, anyone would have mistaken you as lovers exchanging passionate whispers out in the open.
Heeseung knew that wasn't the case.
And he knew if he ever attempted at claiming your lips without proper consent, his face would be wiped off the face of the earth without a second blink. So, no, Ethan didn't kiss you and abruptly left your warmth at that. You stood there, bewildered and dazed as to what had just happened. You held your palm atop your chest, the hammering of your heart in your ribcage too overwhelming to be true.
You could still feel his breath on your cheeks, and it brought shameless heat to occur on your face.
Just what was Ethan doing to you and why didn't he finish what he started? Why did he deprive you of probably the most magical moment within your depressed way of existing?
You could have screamed and demanded he do it. Do it, Heeseung! Kiss me! Fucking kiss me or I'll fucking perish!
You lived for Heeseung's attention. As much as you hid your emotions well, you always had a faint color of blush that rose to your cheeks whenever he would give you his time of the day. Of course, Minjeong and Jisu knew about this. They were the tattletales that told on you to Heeseung. They were tired of you avoiding Heeseung who you were obviously attracted to.
You aren't very slick, [Name]. Jisu thought.
You acted hostile towards your person of interest because, why? Why are you doing this to me? How dare you make me feel something I'm unfamiliar with? Why are you messing with me, get out of my head! I don't want to think about your laugh and see you smile. I don't fucking care if you know how to lead a group efficiently and sing with emotions. The fuck were you going to do with a man who dances like Park Jimin's son and sings like Jeon Jeongguk's clone?
Who the fuck was Heeseung for you to constantly get distracted by him when you needed to be away from sensitive thoughts?
Again, you weren't very slick.
You purposefully pay attention to people you weren't feeling romantic appreciation for, and intentionally shunned the boys you deemed perfect in a frat house with the title 'fuckbois'. You know, the basic frathood habits. Fucking around, directly or indirectly taking hits, smoking vape high in the living room in the middle of a party at 3 in the morning before their semestrial exams would commence at 7. Overall the varsity assholes that fuck and chuck girls left and right like living fleshlights. You know, the boys who fuck you for their own pleasure and neverminding your own.
You believe Heeseung looks like them. You believe Heeseung looks like an asswipe who sticks his penis in whatever hole he gets to fuck and shoo the said hole out of the house. That too, with Sunghoon, Jongseong, and Jaeyoon.
Wow.
Way to label the goodă Ąlooking guys without fully knowing them, [Name], you're such a fucking champ. Fuck, you were being the person you dislike the most. A bastard that stereotypes people based on how they look. Great. Great, [Name]. Wow, you're so attractive for that. Maybe that's why Heeseung, the most flawless man to ever walk on mother earth was a motherfucker to you, because you didn't even fucking know his way of thinking.
How were you supposed to reciprocate his mixed signals as a stubborn as a bullă Ąbitch yourself?
You weren't going to flounder around entertaining another person's inevitable emotions hanging around your head and wafting below your nose for the sake of what? Emotional accomplishment? Romantic companionship? As if that would benefit and feed the higher chances of your debut that was fortunately just around the corner.
Heeseung believes you're worth more than his career. You believe he's an absolute lunatic for that.
There were rules for a reason. Not that you were a willing little idol trainee who would absolutely, in all of her time as an entertainment student, acquise to the (ridiculous) requests from Hybe like you were nothing but a mindless dingbat. It didn't work that way, at least for you.
Alright, maybe that changed after your audition was approved and promised yourself that you would repeat no such actions until you were finally in a debuting group. Your mind was a mess, constantly thinking about Ethan Lee and his adorable smile that you failed to designate the mighty presence that had just entered the practice room.
âJust why am I pondering over his existence like an overdue thesis long beyond repair for a lousy debate on a Sunday at 5:30 in the morning?â You groaned, finding your mention of the time ironic considering the current time and date of your presence in the practice room. âIt's utter bullshit, and I'd rather swallow Jungwon's entire cactus than envision his overbearingly effervescent smile and aggravatingly gorgeous voice, nevermind his undeniably beautiful face and astounding personality.â You covered your face with your hands, your hair falling over your tiny face beautifully and effortlessly.
If only you knew the warmth that would encloud Heeseung's chest and face whenever the little things you do would bestow his planet earth an entire galaxy of beauty and mischief instead of a dark rainstorm that would loom over a perfectly lonesome afternoon. And to witness you, in the flesh, evident in his ears, that you think about him too, made his insides flutter and heat up, because for Lee Heeseung, you were his utmost salvation that needed to embrace him, kiss his affliction away into nothing but floating sparks of enchantment loitering both of your worlds.
âFuck, am I?â You began to question, eyes widening in realization. After all this time of disengaging yourself from all of the fibers of his being, you were beginning to yearn for his affection, and to think that even the simple bat of his eyelash your way would have you in a fit of hushed giggles brought your brain into a pile of mush, because why would you ever see him in a light tinted with whirling pools of lavenders, tangerines, roses, and gold?
âAm I somehow... Enamored with him?â You questioned to none other than yourself, your head deep in thought, your guts tightening, your chest feeling heavy, your stomach coiling.
âI'm moonstruck, aren't I? Trapped in an inevitable abyss of doom and revolting emotions. Fuck, I'm just another hopeless case, am I not?!â You rambled on, threading your fingers through your hair, eyebrows furrowed, eyelids fluttering, continuously blinking, chewing over your unbelievably pink and plush bottom lip as you sit there, all alone within the empty dance studio, finding yourself the biggest moron to have ever been fertilized.
The biggest moron that brought the biggest smile on Heeseung's face, that is.
âIs it true?â You were too consumed by your argument with yourself that you were unsuccessful of getting an earful of the voice barely an accountable distance from you. You sigh defeatedly, closing your eyes as you sigh another time, this time deeper. You were finally admitting it to yourself, that âYes, I, [Full Name], are head over heels for Lee Heeseung, and to be truthful, I have no idea what to do about it.â
âWith me Lee Heeseung beside you? I believe you don't have to worry about a thing.â He spoke, voice louder, amusement and sincerity flowing so deep in his voice, that you finally looked up. Heeseung had always been called a Bambi, since he had large and beautiful eyes that resembled that of a deer caught in headlights, but it was your turn to take on the role of Bambi as you sat there with your mouth agape, eyes wide as your skin went pale.
Yeah, you never should have selfă Ądiscussed a matter like this in a public setting, much more in a place where the subject of your problems could slip in any opportunity he could grab a hold of. You watched as that beautiful smile that you despised the most graced his face. On that particular moment, you deemed Ethan Lee a god. He was the most beautiful thing you're ever seen, and you were frightened to enumerate to yourself that you dug yourself in a hole deeper than the Marian's Trench, and you couldn't swim back up and break the water surface.
âHă ĄHow long have yă Ąyou been here?â You stuttered as you attempted to grab your things and make a run for it, but the powerful waft of his colonge embellished your nose, and before you could slip past him, he had held your wrists and peered down at you with the most ravishing tiwnkle in his eyes.
âLong enough to incorporate all of the information gracefully given to me with abundance.â There was a teasing manner in his tone of voice, but his feelings were evident in the way he smiled. You were the one he wanted, and you felt the same way. You looked up at him stupefied before turning your head down and looking away, afraid that if you further stared into his eyes, you would hurdle into an inevitable turn of events that would brandish the willpower that you've been holding onto, because, truthfully, you only had so much of it left, and you weren't willing to risk it.
His eyes softened, finding the heat that flourished your cheeks absolutely adorable. Your skin felt like strong and healthy flames as he ducked his head down onto your level, releasing one of your wrists in order to tilt your chin in his direction with his fingers. The moment you looked into his eyes was the moment where all of your pent up emotions came flooding in, having your strong front suffering under ruthless abomination.
His eyes reflected off his raw adoration for you, and for once in your life, you finally faced your emotions rather than shutting them out. Lee Heeseung had always infuriated you with nothing but just an intake of a breath, but the man in front of you now, gazing into your eyes as if you were the only beauty that existed in this universe made your heart soft. You felt your walls crashing down into a relentless fall as you reciprocated the eye contact.
âYou're beautiful, princess.â He whispered, quiet enough to be ignored in the entire room, but loud enough for you to absorb. Your lips quivered, hands forming into fists as you blink rapidly, your breath inconsistent as your eyes shine with gloss, a sob escaping your lips as you went on your tippy toes and wrapped your arms around his neck.
The act of surprise made Ethan chuckle wholeheartedly. Heeseung was a hard-working individual with a strong will to conquer and dominate, but that facade instantaneously crumbled down into nothing but a desire to love you undividedly. Your vigorous determination was difficult to overcome, but all of the neglect he received from you felt mythical as you sob in his arms, cradling him I'm sorry's and Forgive me's.
Ethan wrapped his arms around you tighter, lips meeting your forehead and hair multiple times before they met your ears, paying attention to how you instantly took a serene approach after his kisses met your ear. âShh, it's okay. You have nothing to feel sorry about.â He pets your hair, running his palm up and down your head before you detach yourself from him in order to wipe the tears away from your eyes and to rub your nose in case snot would be inviting himself in.
âI didn't anticipate you would ever hear of me talk about you in such the manner, or ever at all!â You exclaimed, interlacing your fingers together. You smiled shyly as Ethan's eyes glimmered with happiness, eyes wide with eagerness and genuine curiosity. Just who was Ethan Lee and how did he crack the toughest cookie around?
He'd never know. You'd never know, but you were glad he did.
âIt was all within Serendipity's favorite love story, angel.â He kissed your forehead tenderly, your nose with uttermost softness, your cheeks feeling like they were kissed by the warmest of clouds, and finally, the most feverish frenzy on your lips.
Heeseung was both a warrior and a modernized Romeo, and he was yours until the end.
You were more of a tough fighter than that of a gentle Juliet, but he was yours, and you were his.
In this madness of the flames and merciless hurricanes, the galaxies and their wishes fell onto earth like a delicate mist of stars and pixie dust, and you were glad it rained on you, because you and Heeseung were the only epiphanies the both of you craved.
Be it the work of serendipity, or the singularity's greatest creation, a glimmer of euphoria, or a moment of epiphany, you and Heeseung loved each other until the rains began to dry and the universe begins to cry.
âWhat if they discover about the two of us, Heeseung?â You asked worriedly, contemplating about taking a step back and apologizing for leading him on. You adored every bit of him, but you couldn't risk the both of your careers for the sake of your love story.
Heeseung smiled and kissed the top of your head.
âI'd rather have you, the love of my life, in my arms more than anything else on this godforsaken world, but for both of our sakes, little one, let's keep our love reserved from the outside world.â He tapped a finger on the tip of your nose and watched you scrunch it up, a bright and wonderful smile on your face as you giggled.
âIf it means I get to love you without restrictions someday, I will.â You answered, cupping his face with your small and soft hands. Ethan chuckled at that, finding you absolutely adorable, he could evaporate into nothing but a beautiful memory for you to hold onto.
âI'll be looking forward to that day, my love. I can't wait to show the entire world, the universe rather, that I'm absolutely entranced by you.â And with that, he kissed you with all the love in the world.
To Heeseung, you were his night and day, you were his warmth on a cold winter night, and the cold breeze on a blazing summer day, and beyond all of that, you were his everything.
   The day was as gray as the concrete walls, as gray as the paling faces of the four girls sitting on their beds, laughing and talking, as gray as your suitcases. And yet, you only saw the beauty in this. Here was where you were to chase your dream, a vision that had seemed so far away and now was so close you could taste it, you could feel it against your skin.
   You set your bags down carefully, trying not to disturb their conversation. They stalled anyway. Their eyes trailed you like hawks, their stares containing the bite of a viper. You didnât let this sway you. You simply ignored the shudder that ran down your spine as you began to unpack.Â
âYouâre new.â one piped up. You glanced behind you for a moment, then turned back to unpacking your things on the first open bed you had seen.Â
âYeah...I am.â You said softly, a smile gracing your face.Â
  The girl turned back to the others and the whispering began. A couple giggles pushed through, but you didnât mind. You expected they saw you as someone unfit to be a trainee, someone who certainly didnât belong here, you didnât blame them.Â
âWelcome.â They chorused suddenly after much deliberation.
  You turned to face them and they were all staring at you with kind smiles. The sudden mood change made you shiver, but you brushed that aside. You were here for your goals and for what you loved...music.Â
âThanks.â You responded, setting up your alarm clock on the bedside table. Their eyes immediately went to that clock.Â
   They exchanged glances and you raised an eyebrow. Your eyes flickered back and forth between their gazes and the clock.Â
âIs there something wrong?âÂ
  The girl in the middle, very clearly the leader of this little posse, stood and walked towards you. Her mouth was twisted unhappily as she passed you and picked up the alarm clock. She moved it around in her hands for a moment, examining it. Then she plastered a smile on her face, placing it back on the table with perhaps too much force for the task.Â
âItâs just that,â She started sweetly, âWe all wake up at the same time and if you really want to wake up early, youâd have to get someone else on board with that, but donât worry, youâll want every second of sleep.â She laughed airily.
   The girl was naturally stunning. Her hair was bleached a light blonde, but her roots were growing back, creating a two-toned look. Her eyes were drawn upwards in a cat-like appearance and she held herself with confidence; shoulders pulled back, chest on display, preening like a peacock.Â
âSetting an alarm is pointless anyway-â A girl piped up.Â
âYeah, the schedule changes so much-â
âAnd that would wake us all up!â They all began protesting.Â
âIn other words, itâs better if you didnât, okay?â The leader crossed her arms, staring you up and down, her eyes tracing your figure invasively.Â
âOkay.â You said, your voice barely above a whisper.Â
  This was certainly a welcome you hadnât expected. You hadnât even expected a welcome and at this point you wished that you hadnât gotten one at all. You slowly turned and placed the alarm in the drawer under the table.Â
âGreat! Now that itâs all settled, introduce yourself!â The leader clapped happily and you could tell she was used to getting her way.Â
âWell, Iâm Y/L/N Y/N.â You dipped your head in greeting and she nodded as if this was incredibly intriguing information. You appreciated her enthusiasm.Â
âIâm Kim Yeona.â She reached out and extended her hand.
   You looked at the outstretched hand for a second longer than you should have. She gestured with her hand, trying to get you to shake her hand.Â
âGod, weâve got another slow one.â Yeona said as if this was the entertainment of the century.Â
  You swallowed thickly and shook her hand, trying not to squeeze too hard for fear her delicate bones may break under the grip of your calloused ones.Â
âWelcome to hell.â She grinned. Â
 âWhat do you like about yourself, Y/N?â Yeona kicked her legs in the air, hair sprawling across the dark wood floors as she hung upside down.
  In her hands was a textbook, of which she was lazily flipping through. Her eyes scanned each page, most likely taking in very little information.Â
âPardon?â You glanced up from your phone.
  You had recently discovered Yeona was only 16 years old, but she intimidated you more than any 18 year old your age could.Â
âI said, what do you like about yourself, Y/N?âÂ
âWhy do you ask?â You went back to your phone, wondering if you could shrink away from her gaze.
   A few hours had passed and the nicest thing Yeona had said to you so far was that she was glad you had arrived because they got the day off to âorientâ you. It had been a mostly rushed tour so that she could go back and work on homework.
  She was hardworking, youâd give her that, and she wasnât unbearable, she just scared you 99% of the time and you had only been with her for less than 24 hours.Â
âWell, youâre here to become an idol, to train and do what you love, right?â She stopped scanning her textbook and craned her neck to look at you. You really worried for her spine.Â
âBut that also means youâve got to feel rather high of yourself to think youâve got what it takes.â She turned over, now laying on her stomach, knuckles brushing the floor.Â
You hummed in response. âAnd what does it take?âÂ
âBeing good at dancing, fit, slim figure,â She crawled onto her elbows and gracefully pulled herself up to her feet.Â
  You raised an eyebrow. She moved closer, close enough that you could see her faded nude lipstick. She lowered her voice.Â
âYou have to be attractive, noticeable, but able to blend in. You have to stay in your line, god forbid you fall behind, and most of all, you have to be perfect.â She reached over with her uniformly manicured nails, swiping non-existent dust off your shirt.Â
âItâs not too late for you to bail now.â And her eyes held genuine concern. Â
  You pressed your lips together, your fingers clenching and unclenching. You had worked, cried, sweat, and bled over getting this position. You pulled on a smile and found yourself laughing.Â
âIâve worked too hard to do that.â You chuckled and Yeona stepped away, confusion flickering across her face. Her lips twisted into a scowl and she flopped back on her bed.Â
âYou remind me of Snow White.â
âWhat?â
âThat girl,â She rolled onto her back, facing the ceiling. âRuns away from the evil queen, fights for her life in a chase scene where sheâs being hunted like prey, and then is saved by acts of kindness.â Yeona clicked her tongue.
 âThe only catch in this story is that you wonât be getting any acts of kindness. Youâre about to be hunted and you canât stop running until you die.â She said it as easily as one breathes. You took a deep breath.Â
âYou talk big, Yeona.âÂ
âThe huntersâ carved out my heart already, dear Y/N. Itâs quite the common procedure here. Now answer my question. What the hell makes you special, princess?âÂ
   You felt your tongue stick to the roof of your mouth.Â
âDetermination. I wonât let anything get in my way.â
âYou and the other one hundred girls here. Try again.âÂ
âDancing, Iâm good at dancing!âÂ
âWe have a girl here who almost went to the Royal Ballet School but dropped it all for this. Try again.âÂ
âIâm...attractive?âÂ
Her eyes looked up an down skeptically. âYou flatter yourself.âÂ
You took a deep breath, struggling to find your next words. âI...I donât know, Yeona. I donât know why they accepted me.âÂ
She nodded tersely. âThatâs what I thought.âÂ
   It wasnât even light out when you arrived at your first dance training session of the day. While around a third of the trainees went to school after this practice, you would be given free time and extra practice time. Yeona had told you this was absurdly unfair, as if you had anything to do with this scheduling.Â
   The practice room was a vibrant wood, light, and illuminated through harsh fluorescent lights. You blinked against the harsh lights, the mirrors along the far right wall reflecting the glare.Â
  There was only one other girl with you and she seemed to have been here much longer than you had. She stretched, earbuds popped in, and you didn't want to disturb her. You took in the room. You had dreamed of being here...for ages.Â
  You seemed to be the only one in awe as several other girls happily trotted in, water bottles in hand and hair pulled into sleek ponytails. A couple looked you up and down, but the rest simply walked by, undeterred by the new face.Â
  You probably looked like a mess. You turned to view yourself in the mirror. Yeah, you definitely looked like a train wreck. It was no wonder the others didnât seem threatened by you. Well, you planned on proving them wrong.
   The others began stretching while you stood dumbly, trying to get a grasp on what was happening. A woman, who you assumed to be the dance instructor, stood to the left wall next to the mirror with her weight on her left hip. She lazily scrolled through her phone, holding a coffee, and looking up every now and then to watch the trainees.Â
   You moved to the right, looking for a good place to stretch and warm up, but it seemed everyone had their place. Your eyes glanced around. The minutes were ticking down for the official start of class. The girl from earlier looked up from her stretches and made eye contact with you. Wordlessly, she gestured for you to come over.Â
  You instantly smiled and relief overwhelmed you. At least you didnât have to be the odd one out for now. You took a place beside her and stretched quietly. Everyone seemed to have their own music going or they were chatting lowly, a few laughs escaped the groups every now and then.Â
   You began to stretch, extending your legs and pulling your arms to your chest. The girl watched you for a moment and you tried not to seem discomforted by this. This entire experience was so foreign and new, you wondered how you would get used to it.Â
âSo youâre new, huh?â The girl asked, her voice lowered to blend in with the murmurs of everyone else.Â
âYeah.â You replied, pressing your forehead to your knee.Â
âIâm Lee-min.â She sat up straight and reached out. You shook her hand.Â
âNice to meet you. Iâm Y/N.â You smiled.Â
âThatâs a pretty name.â Lee-min turned back to her stretches, now moving her arms side to side as she warmed up her back muscles. âI know itâs really hard to get into the groove of things, but youâll get used to it.âÂ
âAre you new too?âÂ
âMe?â She laughed lightly. âGod, no. Iâve been here for three years. Hereâs to this year being my debut. JYM has been giving me hints I might be debuting this year.âÂ
âThatâs exciting!âÂ
âI know.â She smiled softly, almost wearily. She looked tired, with a pale face and soft black hair. âI have another friend here, Ae-cha. Sheâs not in this session though, she goes with the later crew because she has before school activities.âÂ
  She glanced around and leaned in.Â
âSheâs student council president.â She whispered, as if it was a well-kept secret. âI keep telling her to drop the extracurriculars before she runs herself to death. Like, isnât this enough of an extracurricular? But she insists and sheâs a hardworking girl. I think sheâs just worried that if this doesnât work out, sheâll have nothing to fall back on.â
âThatâs a valid concern,â You started, but Lee-min had a dark look in her eye, a sort of desperation as if saying this has to work. âBut I can see how youâd be worried.â
  She seemed pleased with this answer and went back to her stretches. âOh and by the way, that girl over there with Kim Yeona,â
âKim Yeona is my roommate-â
â-Iâm so sorry, anyway, thatâs Park Hea and sheâs a bitch. Stay away from her. Sheâs one of my roommates and she never has anything nice to say.âÂ
âGot it.â You nodded, watching the girl with silver hair and plump lips glance your way. She smirked and turned back to Yeona. The minutes ticked by.Â
âAlright, letâs get to it, girls.â The instructor clapped her hands. âNow for those of you who are new,â Everyoneâs eyes went to you. âIâm instructor Kim Minsuh. Now, pay attention. Iâll show you the moves, you do it, and then weâll speed it up, okay?âÂ
âOkay.â Everyone chorused and you awkwardly joined in.Â
âThis one starts on the fourth count, take your hand here-â She started and you tried to follow along best you could, but you had trained in dance for very little time and your body was not moving in the ways it should.Â
âY/N!â Minsuh shouted and the other girls kept their eyes respectfully forward except for Park Hea, who watched you with a predatory gaze. She looked smug, her lips curled upwards as the instructor pushed past the other girls to berate you.Â
âY/N, what do you think youâre doing?âÂ
âI-Iâm sorry-â
âAll the other girls are getting it just fine. Whatâs wrong with you, huh? Do it again, just you.â The woman snapped.Â
  You nodded, your heart pounding, your ears growing red.Â
âFive, six, seven, eight. One and two and three and-wrong.â She frowned. âPause.â She held up a hand and you awkwardly paused in your position. She moved in front of you, showing you the position once more. âLike this.â She then turned and began moving your hands and legs around to perfectly replicate her. âNow just do that.âÂ
  You swallowed your tongue and nodded once more. You had always been a bit hot headed, but you were determined to get through this day without fucking anything else up. You needed to get past this moment, do this, and excel. That was the goal.Â
âFive, six, seven, eight. One and two and three and-wrong.â She barked. âI just showed you, how are you not understanding?âÂ
âCan we,â You bit your lip anxiously. âCan we just go over it again?âÂ
âWhat? You want to slow everyone else down?â She seemed appalled by this suggestion. âI canât believe this. This is your first day, right? Get used to it.â She looked you up and down. âYou know, a skinnier frame extends the line of movement better. Youâll look more delicate.â She said casually, returning to her place. âPractice on your own time.âÂ
   Lee-min waved you over to her table and you joined her. The table was wood, a faded teal color. You yawned and Lee-min smiled a little.Â
âYou look tired. Here,â She passed you her drink. âItâs just coffee.â She assured you and took it with a shrug.Â
âI never thought it would be anything else.â You chuckled, taking a sip. The bitter taste slid down your throat and you let out a sigh. âThese are awful beans.â
âHey, we take what we can get.â She picked up her napkin.Â
   On her plate was a single serving of rice. You looked to your plate. On it was a serving of rice, a serving of noodles, and green beans. You felt suddenly self conscious. You scanned the rest of the lunch room.Â
  The only one with nearly the same amount of food as you was Park Hea. She had a mountain of food, two, three, servings of rice, a heaping portion of noodles, a couple green beans. You watched her as she began to devour her plate.Â
âAnyway, did you hear anything I was just telling you?âÂ
âWhat?â You tuned back in to Lee-min. âNo, sorry.â You admitted sheepishly.Â
âI appreciate your honesty.â She said, putting down her napkin with a sigh. âAe-cha is late again. We barely have any time to eat and she always misses half of it-â
âWhat were you saying about me?â A steely voice cut through the conversation and Lee-min turned to look at a girl with combat boots, a school uniform on, and snow white hair.Â
âAessi!â Lee-minâs face immediately lit up and the girl, Ae-cha, stiffened as her friend wrapped her in a big hug. âYouâre late again.â
âSorry, student council kept me late.â Ae-cha slid over another chair and sat down, taking out her small serving of noodles.Â
âI told you,â Lee-min tsked unhappily. âTheyâre working you to death.âÂ
âHah, no, thatâs this placeâs job.â The white haired girl laughed, her black lipstick pulling up with her lips.Â
âYouâre right about that.â Lee-min picked up her chopsticks and gestured to her. âNow eat up, we barely have any time left.â
âYouâre like my mom and I left her to come to this place for a reason.â Ae-cha rolled her eyes, but dug into her meal quickly.Â
âShe likes to pretend she doesnât like my affection but sheâs actually a real softy.â Lee-min teased and Ae-cha crossed her arms unhappily.Â
   Your attention drifted once more. Park Hea and Kim Yeona were laughing loudly, not caring about the cafeteria hearing. Heaâs stomach was bloated, looking almost uncomfortably so.Â
   You glanced away, feeling bad about staring at her. She whispered something to Yeona and headed off in the direction of the bathrooms. You suspected she had way too much to eat. The meal had looked big enough to feed three people anyway.Â
âArenât you going to introduce me to your new friend?â Ae-cha cleared her throat.Â
âSoon to be yours too!â Lee-min smiled and reached over, patting your arm. You shifted your concentration back to the conversation.Â
âIâm Y/N.â You greeted her.Â
âIâm Ae-cha.âÂ
âI know.â You smiled warily.Â
Ae-cha grasped her heart in mock shock, playfully slapping her friend. âExcuse me! What did I say about giving other people first impressions of me before I can introduce myself!âÂ
âI dunno.â Lee-min shrugged, a cheeky smile on her face.Â
âYou absolute dummy!â Ae-cha shouted.Â
âYeah, but you love me.â The other girl laughed, the sound wavering as Ae-cha playfully shook her shoulders.Â
âGod, itâs like weâre high. Iâm pretty sure everyone thinks we are. Weâre such crackheads sometimes, you know?â Lee-min chuckled, running out of breath as Ae-cha moved on to tickling her armpits.
  You couldnât help laughing along with them. Lee-minâs laugh was infectious and Ae-chaâs smile made you want to smile as well.Â
   A few weeks past and you had firmly decided you hated vocal training the most. Vocal training was a nightmare. Your voice was untrained, self taught. Your throat was straining, the muscles working hard to hit your notes.Â
   You were trying your best, but your voice kept cracking. Your best wasnât enough, yet. Soon it would be, but for now, you were stuck with this.Â
âRemember to breathe, Y/N. You keep running out of breath and thatâs certainly not good.â The teacher scolded, coming over and placing a hand on your back and a hand on your chest. She straightened your spine and then moved back to her place.Â
âOne more time, girls.â She announced sunnily.Â
   You sang your little heart out, you really tried, but singing really wasnât for you. You couldnât figure it out. You brought up your thoughts to Lee-min later that night.Â
   It was an hour before curfew. You and Park Hea switched rooms for the time being until curfew because Hea was a friend of Yeona and you, with Lee-min and Ae-cha. Lee-min was lying on the floor, staring at her phone. Ae-cha walked through the door, her towel wrapped around her body as she began to change into her pajamas.Â
âYou had a nice long shower.â Lee-min declared, not looking up from her phone. You sat on Ae-chaâs bed. Their room was so much cleaner than yours. You were envious of that.Â
âI like to take my time.â Ae-cha retorted.Â
âAnd you probably used up all the hot water.â The other girl responded with an equal amount of force.Â
âHow could you think me so low?âÂ
  To this, Lee-min snorted and rolled over, her back to Ae-cha. You chuckled at their antics. Their bickering was so normal, so routine. There was a long silence as the dayâs work finally set into your bones.
   You were tired, exhausted. Even Lee-min, who was normally hyper, had her eyes fluttering open and shut, clearly wishing to sleep.Â
âDo you guys think that Iâm not supposed to be here?â You wondered aloud. Ae-cha glanced over to you and Lee-min raised an eyebrow, setting down her phone.Â
âWhat do you mean?âÂ
âItâs too early for you to be thinking that.â They echoed.Â
âItâs just...Iâm not particularly outstanding in any one thing.â You averted your eyes to the floor. The old creases of the wood dug into your feet.Â
âThatâs not true! Youâre beautiful, a great dancer, and perfectly fit to be here.â Lee-min protested.Â
âYou and I both know thatâs not true.â You argued. There was a squeak, signalling someone was entering the room. Ae-cha and Lee-minâs room had a pesky floorboard under the carpet that squeaked every time you stepped on it.Â
âYouâre just a filler, we all know it.â Heaâs voice shot through the argument like a bullet. You looked at her, shock on your face.Â
âWhat? You asked. Iâll answer you honestly, unlike these dogs.â Hea sneered, stepping through the doorway. âYouâre not special in anything. Youâre just okay and theyâll stick you into a group where they want to make another member shine brighter next to you.â She took her hair tie out of her hair and climbed onto her bed. âItâs time to switch rooms, newbie.âÂ
  You nodded awkwardly, standing and leaving the room, sparing a single glance behind you. Yeona was already asleep and the silent dorm had your ears ringing.Â
   A few days turned to weeks turned to months. You gradually grew into the schedule, the monotony, the beauty. You were constantly surrounded by people who were ten times better than you, ten times more qualified, ten times prettier, and it pushed you further.Â
   You were driven even further towards your goal. You wanted to debut. You wanted to make music, to dance, to perform, more than anything you else you had ever wanted. And for the longest time, this was only what you wanted.Â
âGirls!â Minsuh entered the room, clapping her hands together. âI have a surprise! A member from HOME is here with us to teach us a dance for the final assessment.âÂ
  Hea and Yeona immediately turned to each other, squealing excitedly while you looked over to Lee-min and Ae-cha happily.Â
âWow, can you believe that?â You whispered to Lee-min. âI wonder who it is.âÂ
   HOME, the hottest boy group on the market. They were made of eight members and known for their stunning visuals, killer dancing capabilities, and heavenly singing. They had it all. You wanted it all too.Â
âHavenât you heard?â Ae-cha leaned over to you. âItâs Jung Hoseok. Heâs the best dancer in HOME.âÂ
âI know that.â You whispered furiously. âBut how did they get him to teach us?âÂ
âI donât know. Magic?â Ae-cha shrugged.Â
âWhat are you guys talking about?â Lee-min leaned over so far, her face planted into your lap.Â
âClass! Welcome Mr. Jung!â Minsuh moved to the side.
   A man with a slim build, sweatpants, and a white shirt walked in. He wore a thick black jacket and sneakers. His eyes scanned the room, stopping on you. He tilted his head slightly, eyes narrowing, and then moving to the front of the room.Â
âPlease, just call me Hoseok.â He smiled and his face lit up the room like a thousand burning stars. Your eyes widened. How could he be even more handsome in person? âToday Iâll be teaching you while your kind instructor Minsuh takes some time off, yeah?âÂ
âHave fun!â He called as she waved and exited the room without another word. âOkay, letâs run through what youâve learned so far. Five, six, seven, eight. One and two and three and four and five, and six and seven and eight.â He continued counting. You could feel his piercing stare. You knew you were messing up, big time, but you just kept going.Â
âOkay, great. A couple notes.â He moved through the room, correcting one by one. âAnd you, whatâs your name?â He stopped in front of you.Â
âY/N. Y/L/N Y/N.â You said quickly.Â
âHm, okay, well,â He stood in front of you, showing you the move again. âThere are a couple parts that arenât very clean right now, but I know you have it down. You just have to practice. I suggest extra practice in your free time.â He said it as if he was a doctor prescribing medicine. You nodded.
   He adjusted your position, his hands were warm and dry. You could feel his touch linger as he gently prodded your hands and feet into the right place.Â
âI will.âÂ
His face lit up. âGreat! Keep up the good work! Okay everyone,â He clapped. âLetâs move on.âÂ
  Sweat on the floor, pooling on your forehead, sliding down the slope of your nose, the salty taste on your lips. You ran the moves over and over. As your stamina began running low, your legs stumbled, your footwork grew sloppier, your legs were burning. You kept going.Â
  You stumbled for the water bottle you had brought and chugged at least half of it. You swiped the sweat from your forehead. You glanced at your body through the mirror, really getting a close look at it.Â
  You moved closer to your reflection, gently caressing your jawline and pulling up your shirt to study the body fat on your stomach. You found yourself reaching up to squeeze the extra bit of fat. You moved it around between your fingers, staring at yourself. For the first time, a looming sense of dread came over you.
  Stop. You told yourself. Itâs just a bit of fat. Itâs fine. Everyone has it. You went back to your position, playing the music and starting the choreography. You needed to get this down. All your brain power was used to focus on these moves. You just needed to get through it once.Â
  The music faded out and you realized you had dazed out halfway through. You let out an angered groaned and stepped closer to the mirror. You brushed your hand over your cheeks, checking for acnes spots. Then you held up your arms checking for upper arm fat.Â
  The door opened.Â
   You whipped around, releasing your arm and stepping backwards. Hoseok stood in the doorway, eyes flickering between you and the mirror. He gently set down his bag.Â
âEverything alright?âÂ
âYup! Just practicing!âÂ
âIâŠ.heard. Lee-min told me you were in here.âÂ
âJust uh...following the doctorâs orders.âÂ
âAnd Iâm the doctor?â He raised an eyebrow.Â
â...yes?âÂ
  Then, he started laughing loudly.Â
âYeah, surprisingly, thatâs not the first time Iâve heard that.â He chuckled. âHere, try again and Iâll watch and give you some tips.â
âWow that would be...amazing.â You breathed. âIâve been struggling a bit.âÂ
âI know.â He nodded.Â
âOh.â
âItâs not bad!â He shook his head, moving towards you. He took a seat in front of the mirror. âI used to struggle a lot too until someone was kind enough to reach out and help me. I wanted to do the same.âÂ
  You smiled and he easily returned it.Â
âOkay, five, six, seven, eight.âÂ
   You began the dance and he watched you, his analytical eyes scanning your every movement, picking apart the problems.Â
âThat was a good start. You need to make your movements sharper. Like here, you hear this BOOM in the music and you need to do the movement quickly. Like this.â He demonstrated and you followed along. âGood, try again.âÂ
âFive, six, seven, eight.â He clapped on beat. This time he danced with you. âPah pah pah PAH pah,â He said and you smiled at his sound effects, of which scarily worked.Â
   You could feel the beat. The movements were in your bones, you could feel yourself sinking into each move, putting your all into every action. You were doing it. Each one went fluidly into the next one. It made sense, finally. The music ended and you stood, breathless.Â
âThatâs it!â He exclaimed after you had finished.Â
   You smiled brightly, extremely pleased with yourself. You had finally done it! The hardest moves, everything. You were ecstatic, truly. It felt like it was about to burst out of you.
   Dance had been a pain, but now you could see, it was extremely fun. There was a reason you had wanted to do this.Â
âThank you, Hoseok.â You smiled. âIâm not much of a dancer, but that felt really good.â You instinctually hugged him and he took a step back, surprised, before hugging you back.Â
âAh, itâs no problem. If you need any more help, Iâm on a break for this month.â He opened his phone. âLet me give you my number. If you need anything, let me know.âÂ
âSee you later, then, I always need help it seems.â You laughed, grabbing your bag and leaving the room.Â
   Hea always had way too much on her plate, quite literally. You always wondered how she managed it and kept a nice form. For lunch, you followed Lee-minâs lead and got a portion of rice, but you also got a portion of noodles.Â
  Your stomach was growling in hunger and you knew you needed the fuel for later. Every other day, instead of dance practice in the afternoon, you had a workout block. It was horrible. Not many people enjoyed it and you were one of them.Â
âUgh the workout might actually kill me today.â Lee-min pressed her forehead to the table.Â
âYouâll be fine.â Ae-cha chided.Â
âShut up Miss âIâm team captain of the cross country clubâ.â Lee-min groaned.Â
âYou do cross country?â You piped up, picking up your chopsticks and digging into the food.Â
âYeah!â Ae-chaâs eyes brightened. âI love running, makes me feel good, like Iâm going somewhere.â
âBut she refuses to use the treadmills.âÂ
âWell I canât explain it...I just donât like itâŠâ Ae-cha scratched the back of her head.Â
âNo, no, I get it.â You smiled. âIt kind of sucks to be running but not actually going anywhere.âÂ
âYeah, thatâs exactly it, Y/N! Gosh youâre so smart.â Ae-cha said hurriedly and Lee-min rolled her eyes.Â
âYeah yeah, just go ahead and kiss each otherâs asses while youâre at it.â The other girl said grumpily.Â
âAw you love us, Lee-min.â You poked her arm playfully.Â
âYeah yeah. Are you going to eat that?â Ae-cha pointed to your practically untouched food. You had completely forgotten about it. Your stomach rumbled and you nodded.Â
âYeah, sorry, I just spaced out.â
âWell you should eat quick, people are already cleaning up.â Ae-cha grinned and stood, taking her tray to the food waste bin and kitchen.
   You quickly chomped down on your food and then followed her lead. Lee-min rose after you. Your eyes trailed Hea as she rushed off in search of the bathroom once more. You averted your eyes, deciding it was none of your business.Â
 âThe final assessment is coming up in a month.â Hoseok said, scrolling lazily through his phone. You were both collapsed on the floor of the dance studio after a hard training session.Â
âOh yeah?â You responded, distracted by the posts on your phone.Â
âYeah. Itâs big. You have to pass or youâll be put back on training for who knows how long.âÂ
âReally?â You sat up and put away your phone.
  He followed your actions, facing you with his legs crossed. There was a light buzz as the fluorescent lights flickered ever so slightly.Â
âMhmmm.â He hummed. âI passed first time, but some people I know didnât and...theyâre still trainees. Even after all this time.â His lips pulled down into a frown and your stomach sank.Â
âSo I guess I have to pass.âÂ
âYup.â He stood, offering you a hand. You took it, standing up slowly. âI plan on helping you get there.âÂ
âHow much longer do you have on break?â You tilted your head and he donned a pensive look.Â
âHmmm about another two weeks.âÂ
âAh, well, I guess you should spend your time relaxing, Hoseok, not helping me out.âÂ
  His gaze softened slightly and he turned away, facing the mirror. His eyes flickered over to yours in the reflection.Â
âDonât worry, Y/N, I want to be here. Besides, it would be awfully boring alone in the dorm for all that time.âÂ
  You began to dance once more. You tried not to pay attention to how his touch lingered on your arm or how he fixed you with a heated stare every time you moved. You tried to ignore the flutter in your stomach and the awkward tension in the air every time he placed a hand to your waist.Â
   He held your wrists in his hands and he leaned closer. Your heart was pounding. Was he going to kiss you? Was he going to ask you out?
âHave you lost weight?â Was what he asked.Â
  To which you pulled back immediately. You wrapped your arms around your body.Â
âWhat do you mean? No I havenât.â You snapped.Â
âYou can tell me if somethingâs wrong.â He furrowed his eyebrows, stepping closer, and now you felt like a caged animal.Â
âNothingâs wrong!â You blurted.Â
  Your phone started ringing and you excused yourself, checking who it was as you ducked into the hallway. It was your mother. You frowned and pressed the decline button. Didnât she know you were busy? You ducked back into the room.Â
âSorry...about that.âÂ
âNo, itâs okay. I know these things can be touchy. It wasnât my place.â But there was a sadness in his voice.Â
âItâs fine. Itâs not a big deal.â You assured him. âLetâs just continue.â
 âY/N, are you going to eat that?â Ae-cha leaned over.Â
   Your nerves were fried. You had so much work to do, you couldnât imagine how Lee-min was feeling since she had at leas twice your work, but she seemed happy.Â
   You had circles forming under your eyes and that damn song was just playing over and over. You had maybe three hours of sleep in the past four days.Â
âNo, no, take it.â You handed her your portion of rice.Â
âAre you sure you donât want it?âÂ
âYeah, Iâll get a snack later.â You said and you knew you wouldnât but it placated them well enough.Â
âYou should eat it. We have the workout later.â Ae-cha said, quickly turning back to her food.Â
âNo, you just said you wanted it.â
âBut now I feel bad, I didnât think youâd actually give it to me.âÂ
âWhat, you think Iâm a pig?âÂ
âThatâs not what I was saying at all!âÂ
âThatâs what it sounded like-â
âOh my god, shut up you two.â Lee-min rested her head on the table, starting to doze off.Â
âLee-min you really should sleep.â You said soothingly, rubbing her back.Â
âYeah but I donât have time.â
âCoffee does the trick.â Ae-cha chimed in, dropping the previous subject with ease.Â
âAh yeah, coffee is great.â You agreed.Â
âI hate the taste of those burnt beans. You know this.â she groaned.Â
âI know, I know, but you also need to stay safe and passing out from exhaustion isnât good for you.â You scolded, ignoring the turning feeling in your stomach. You begged it not to rumble or else Ae-cha would be up your ass again.Â
 âI canât do it!â You shouted angrily, pacing and grabbing at your hair. Hoseok trailed you with a concerned look on his face.Â
âHey, hey, itâs okay, roadblocks are natural in these stages.âÂ
âMy body wonât do what I want it to do! Why canât I just do it?!â You hissed, slapping your thighs angrily. âMove, legs! Move!â You berated yourself. The fat jiggled and you wanted to carve it right off of you.Â
âY/N.â
âWhy canât I just do it.â You repeated. âEveryone else can do it.âÂ
âY/N.âÂ
âGod why am I even here, I canât even do the most basic move-â
âY/N!â He grabbed your shoulders, shaking you quickly and you stopped mid sentence.Â
âPlease stop. This is a hard move. Itâs perfectly okay to not be able to do it. But I believe you can pull it off. This...this is normal, to have issues, I mean. You just need to get your body used to this. I have faith you can do it and it really kills me to hear you say this about yourself.âÂ
  Your breath caught in your throat. Your shoulders heaved up and down, the panic leaving your system as you followed the soothing pattern of his breathing.Â
âIâm sorry.â You said miserably, sinking to the ground and putting your head in your hands. âI think Iâm just...really cranky lately. I snapped at Lee-min and Ae-cha the other day. God Iâm such an asshole.âÂ
âYouâre not an asshole. Have you been eating?âÂ
âOf course I have!âÂ
âReally? So if I went to ask Ae-cha if youâve been eating, sheâd say yes?âÂ
âMhm.â You said uncertainly.Â
âThat doesnât sound so sure.âÂ
âWell, it is.â You snapped, turning away from him. He frowned and scooted closer, placing a hand on your thigh.Â
âYou need to eat.âÂ
âAnd I am.âÂ
âSure.â He was obviously not buying it, but if it could keep him off your back, then you were happy.Â
 âAre you feeling alright, Y/N?â Yeona glanced up from her phone. You paused your writing for a moment. The lightest of pencil marks traced the page with lyrics unsung.Â
âYeah, Iâm fine, why?âÂ
âNothing.â Yeona went back to her screen.Â
  The other three girls in your dorm were out shopping with one of the few free days you had. You knew Lee-min and Ae-cha were working extremely hard, but mostly Lee-min. Sheâd been here for years so you assumed she was trying to pull out all the stops so she could debut.Â
  You didnât blame her, but you were worried. She was so quiet now, falling asleep at lunch, and practicing for days without sleep. You thought it best to leave her alone today.Â
âOkayâŠâ You turned back to your work, the soft sound of pencil on paper marking the page.Â
âWhatâs your family like?â Yeona piped up again and you set down your pencil, swiveling around in the chair.Â
  You had gotten here before everyone else and got to claim the lone desk, although usually you left it for Yeona as she needed to do homework.Â
âI have one brother, a mother, and a father.â You said vaguely.Â
âOlder or younger?âÂ
âWhat?â
âYour brother.â
âOlder.âÂ
âDid he want to be an idol too?âÂ
   You fell quiet and Yeona raised an eyebrow. You chuckled softly to yourself.
 âNo, god no, that boy canât even handle going to the grocery store without having a meltdown. Heâs a hypochondriac and a serious germophobe. My mom stays home to make sure heâs alright. She always gives him special attention.â Yeonaâs eyebrows furrowed in thought and you scratched the back of your neck. âAnyway-â
âIâm sorry, that must have been tough to be around.â
âNo, it was fine. He needs it.â You said stiffly, turning back to your work.Â
  Another long pause. You could hear the sound of girls exiting and entering, laughing loudly or with quiet footsteps. It was calming. The window was open in your dorm and there was a light breeze that ruffled your papers. It was a sunny day, a good day.Â
âSo...you and Hoseok.â
âWhat?â
âYouâve been practicing with Jung.âÂ
âI donât see how thatâs any of your business.â You said lightly, keeping your eyes glued to the page, but your heart was racing just at the sound of his name.Â
âIâm just saying, people are beginning to talk.â
âThe relationship between me and Hoseok,â You started and she perked up. You swivelled around in your seat again, fixing her with a hard stare. âIs strictly professional. We each have something we need to be doing and we each have a means to an end. Any other questions?âÂ
She grinned at your response, which took you off guard.Â
âNope. Iâve got all the information I need.â She stood and stepped through the doorway, which prompted you to follow her quickly.Â
âWhat do you mean by that?!â You shouted as she strutted down the hall.
   She smiled and waved before slipping into a room a few doors down. You sighed and collapsed to the ground. The final assessment was a little over three weeks away now. You were beat down from all the practice and training, but you still had an urge to dance. You sat up and reached for your phone, sending a quick text.Â
See you in five.Â
   You eagerly stood and pulled on some clothes for dancing; light, breathable leggings and a crop top. You stared at your figure in the mirror on the back of the door.Â
   A frown twisted onto your face and you slid your hands down your stomach. Then you turned to the side, grabbing at the fat bunched up around your hips. You removed the crop top and decided on a thin t-shirt instead.Â
âIâm heading out to the dance studio.â You said, popping your head into Ae-cha and Lee-minâs room.
  It was always good to have someone know where you were in case something happened.
âOkay you busy bee! Actually, I should probably do some work, too.â Lee-min said, starting to stand up, but Ae-cha grabbed her hand. The other girl pulled her down and locked her into a brace.Â
âYouâve been working too hard, minnie,â Ae-cha protested, holding down her arms in a bone crushing hug. âQuick! Run, Y/N, before she can join you!âÂ
   You laughed and bid them goodbye, the echoes of Lee-min arguing with Ae-cha bounced off the walls as you left the building. It was sunny, but there was a cool breeze that had you shivering, but you were always cold nowadays.Â
Donât you have lunch soon? We can postpone practice.
No, donât worry about me, I ate a big breakfast. You replied quickly, walking across the grounds to the dance studio building.
   JYM was a big entertainment with a college-like training facility. There were three dorm buildings, a training center with dance studios and practice rooms, a recording studio, and a few buildings off to the side for already debuted groups to live.Â
  Everyone longed for those dorms. They were spacious with lots of comfortable furniture and luxuries. It was a shame so few groups could actually enjoy them with their busy schedules.Â
  You saw Hoseok leaving his building and you quickly waved. He looked up, having seen a movement in his peripheral.Â
âAh! Y/N!â He called.Â
âYou ready to get this dance down?â You shouted, picking up the pace to walk next to him.Â
   He nodded, a giddy smile on his face, and you could tell he really loved dance. This love mightâve even started to rub off on you as well because you found yourself getting excited to dance. You told yourself it wasnât just because of him, because now you could feel it in your bones when a song came on. You wanted to dance.Â
âYou know it.â He bumped into your side and you bumped him back.Â
  This went back and forth until you were practically shoving him to the grass. He didnât seem to mind, reaching out from his place on the ground and catching your ankle.Â
âAh! Ow!â You cried out, clutching your ankle tightly. His eyes went wide and he scrambled up.Â
âOh my god, Y/N, are you okay?!â He shook you as if that was going to help anythingÂ
âYeah, just, help me up.â You reached out a hand and he, foolishly, took it.Â
   You pulled him to the ground and pounced, placing your hands next to his head and straddling his waist.Â
âGotcha.â You said slyly.Â
   You could get lost in his dark brown eyes. They were like muddy pools of water in a dry desert. They could revive you for miles. You blinked. His ears went red and you gulped, realizing exactly what position you were in.Â
âUh...woops, uh, sorry, this is, uh, awkward.â You whispered quietly, rolling off of him and standing up, brushing the dirt and grass off your pants. You held out your hand and he glanced at it skeptically.Â
âOh come on, I canât trick you again, Jung.â You rolled your eyes and he let out a dry laugh, taking your hand and hoisting himself up.Â
âYou shouldnât joke about those things. I thought you were seriously hurt.â He said sternly.Â
âOr maybe Iâm just a great actress.â You teased, but his face remained solemn.Â
âI take the health of my teammates and the people around me very seriously, Y/N.â He huffed. âAnd youâre someone I care about so of course Iâll be concerned.âÂ
  You paused, looking at him with a blank expression for a moment. Then you nodded.Â
âI understand. Sorry about that, but itâs okay to say you were tricked. I was just joking around.â You said, but the guilt was crawling up your veins. For some reason, his words made your skin crawl in embarrassment.Â
   You entered the practice room and set down your things.Â
âDid you bring a water bottle?â He asked, his voice ticking upwards in disbelief.Â
âNoâŠâ You said guiltily. âItâs this new thing Iâm on. JYM says itâs good for, uhm, losing excess weight.â
âYou need water, Y/N.â He sighed in exasperation and dug around his bag. âHere, take my extra one and go fill it up in the water fountain.âÂ
   You nodded and took the bottle he held out, rushing to the water fountain outside. You followed his commands without a second thought.Â
âYou filled it all the way?â He came over to inspect your work as you returned to the room.Â
âYup.â You smiled and he checked the level. He gave an approving nod and went to the front of the room.Â
âLetâs go over it again.âÂ
   The music started and your body seemed to move on its own. The movements were in you and you knew you were on fire. It was astonishing for you. You didnât think you had it in you, but as you watched yourself in the mirror, you could feel it was going well. You hit each beat, perfectly accentuated your poses. It was a miracle for you.Â
âWell, Y/N, it seems youâve got it down.â He smiled proudly, walking over to you. âYou donât need me anymore. Just keep practicing on your own and youâll be fine.âÂ
   His hands were burning through your t-shirt, heating your cold arms. His body was so close to yours, you just wanted to press yourself against him and never let go. When he smiled, his brilliant white teeth blinded you, but you had no complaints. You leaned in every so slightly.Â
âItâs all thanks to youâŠâ And as he began to pull away, you reached out and desperately clutched onto his arms again. âBut wait! I think I need some help on that, uh, that move at count four-â
âY/N.â He tsked disapprovingly, he tilted his nose up, closing his eyes in frustration. âYouâve had that move down since day one. Donât pretend you donât know it now.âÂ
  You wanted his touch to linger, no, actually, you just wanted him to linger. You wanted him to want you, just like how you wanted everyone else in the goddamn world to want you.Â
âBut I donât!â You insisted. âSee!â You demonstrated the move and he sighed heavily.Â
âYou know it, stop pretending you donât.âÂ
âI donât!â You repeated, with more force.Â
  Just stay stay stay. He was slipping out of your grasp like everything else. Your phone buzzed with a call. You rushed over, glancing at the caller ID. It was your mother. You scoffed and quickly declined. Then you turned back to him.Â
âPlease, letâs just go over it one more time.â Your fingernails dug into your palms, leaving deep crescent moons.Â
âY/N, why are you doing this?â He asked, pleaded.Â
âBecause Iâm in love with you!â You blurted out. âIâm in love with everything you do. The way you carry yourself, the way you dance, the way you teach and handle everything you care about with such kindness. I love how you light up a room and how you can somehow see the good in everyone. I love how you believe in me, even when I donât believe in myself.âÂ
   He was silent, staring at you with an unreadable expression. Your chest heaved up and down, the anxiety creeping farther up your spine as the silence stretched on. He seemed to be in thought. After a moment, he let out a breath, donning his usual smile, the smile you had fallen for completely.Â
âItâs a good thing I feel the same way, Y/N.â He whispered and stepped towards you. You sucked in a breath, moving closer.Â
âReally?âÂ
âYeah, really.â He leaned in close, his nose brushing yours.
  The fluorescent lights felt like the perfect mood lighting, harsh and open, but stunning at the same time, just like his kiss as he crushed his lips to yours. His kiss was rough, but his hands were soft and his breath was hushed. He simply guided you like a lost lamb, tongue searching for entrance to your mouth and you easily gave in.Â
  You held onto fistfuls of his shirt, drawing him closer and he gripped your waist harshly. He pulled away and your eyes fluttered open. He was shockingly beautiful, there was no way that just happened.Â
âSo what happens from here?â You asked hesitantly.Â
âWell, we have to keep this a secret, obviously.â He chuckled.Â
âI think Yeonaâs already on to us.â
âWho?â
âMy roommate.â You groaned unhappily.Â
âAw câmon, is she really that bad?â He brushed against your shoulder playfully.
   You laughed and let your head fall on his shoulder. You watched yourself in the mirror. You looked like a normal, happy couple. But you couldnât be. You couldnât ever have this, not long term. It was a finality that terrified you.Â
âYes, she is.â You stated firmly.Â
  You didnât want to bring down the mood of the moment. Everything was right in this world at this moment. Things were looking up, they were finally going your way. Your phone rang again, the melody beeping out loudly. You sighed and removed yourself from his grasp, checking your phone.Â
âIsnât it lunch time for you?â He asked while you furrowed your eyebrows.Â
âYeah, but itâs fine I already ate earlier.â You said easily âGosh, my mom has been calling non-stop. Itâs like she has no idea I have things to do.â
âWhen did you last see them?â Hoseok asked as you pressed decline.Â
âA little under a year now. Itâs fine though, they never really noticed me. They didnât care if I went running off to train to be an idol.â You shrugged and dropped your phone back in your bag.Â
âNow...want to run the dance again?âÂ
   Hoseok went back to regular training the next week, but it had been a happy week of practice and quiet nights spent together in the dance room. Now you laid awake, alone, in your dorm room. Surrounded, but alone.Â
   Yeona slept across from you, the other girls tossing and turning. Tensions were high and you barely had any time to speak with Lee-min and Ae-cha. There were only two weeks left before the final assessment and you barely had time to even look at anyone, let alone speak.Â
   You were exhausted, it was 1 A.M. and you had to be awake in two hours, but instead, you were restless. The soft sounds of footsteps and quiet conversations carried through the dorm. The window was closed to the frigid air outside, but it didnât help much. The heat in your room was broken. You were freezing even more than you were usually.Â
  Your phone buzzed. You had turned the ringer off, but the buzz itself was crazy loud. Yeona shifted and you didnât want to wake her, so you grabbed your phone and slipped out of the room. It was your mother. You glanced around the hallway. It was dark, the light of the moon filtering in through the windows at each end.Â
   You pressed accept and pressed the phone to your ear.Â
âYeah?âÂ
âOh, Y/N, there you are. Iâve been trying to reach you-â
âYeah, I know, mom, what do you want?âÂ
âI was just calling to check up on you and-â
âI have a lot on my plate. Iâm really busy. Is this important?â You bit back harshly, tapping your foot impatiently against the carpet.
  The dull thump was loud against the silence. You crossed your arms, biting at your lip.Â
âYes, Y/N.â Your mother sighed.
  She sounded tired and your expression softened, even though you knew she couldnât see you.Â
âIs everything alright?â You asked, your tone lighter than before. A yawn was threatening to break through.Â
âNo. Y/N...your brother has fallen ill. Dangerously so. Heâs in critical condition and it would be really nice if you could make it out here-â She started and now you could hear the subtle sounds of rustling and talking in the background. She was at the hospital. You looked guiltily to the ground and let out a sigh.Â
âIâm sorry, mom. Things have gotten so crazy around here. The final assessment is just around the corner and Iâve got to pass. I just donât see how I can find the timeâŠâÂ
âPlease, Y/N. Weâre your blood, your family. Donât we come first?âÂ
âYouâve never put me first, mom.â You said with a frown and you were sure she could hear it too.Â
âThatâs untrue!âÂ
âIâm sorry, Iâve got to go. I have to be awake in another hour.â You paused. âGet some sleep, mom. Go home and rest.â Then you hung up.Â
   You inhaled a shaky breath and walked back towards your room. You passed by the bathroom. The echoed sounds of someone throwing up and a toilet flushing made your ears perk up.Â
  The sink ran, the pipes groaning as they were brought to life. You froze as you heard the footsteps come closer, reaching the door.Â
   The metal door slowly opened and a girl with silver hair and dark eyes came out, wiping the corner of her mouth with her sleeve. She paused and turned, sensing your presence. Park Heaâs eyes widened and she slowly backed away. You averted your eyes as if to say I wonât tell. And you werenât. It was none of your business.Â
   It was a good day. The sun had warmed the ground all day and there was a chill breeze as night fell. It was a cold sort of warmth, the kind with a bitter chill. Hoseok and you were practicing in the dance room. Well, more like, he was practicing while you took a break. He was hardworking, he rarely took breaks.Â
   The room was hot, the sweat hitting the floor. You laughed a little at a video and then leaned against the mirror. Your sweat had dried and you felt gross as your heart rate slowed. You needed a shower, bad. But Hoseok was here and you never got to see him anymore.Â
âHoseok, why did you narrow your eyes at me?â
âWhat?â He asked, catching his breath as he stopped and turned to you.Â
âThat first day. I thought you hated me already.â
  He laughed and swiped some sweat off his forehead. âItâs not that-â
âThen what is it?â You grinned, standing and moving toward him. The corners of his lips turned upwards.Â
âI guess I have a habit of picking out people who might need a little more help-â
You gasped and slapped his arm playfully. âExcuse me! Iâm an excellent dancer.â
âYeah yeah sure.â
âAre you doubting my abilities?â You huffed, crossing your arms and strutting forward until you were chest to chest with him.Â
âI donât doubt you, love.â He chuckled lowly and your cheeks heated up. He leaned down and pressed a quick kiss to your lips and then pulled away, queuing the music once more.Â
âYou canât just catch me off guard like that.â You grumbled.Â
âYou need to stop being so beautiful.â He smiled widely and you swore he could outshine the sun.Â
âAh,â You looked at the text from Ae-cha in the group chat and sighed.
 âI should probably go and get showered and stuff. Ae-cha wants to go out for dinner tonight since we have free time.â You shouldered your bag and gave him a chaste kiss on the cheek before heading for the door.Â
âSee ya!â You called. Life was looking up. You had everything down. Nothing could go wrong, you had prepared so much, and perhaps a bit too naively.
âSee you later, Y/N!â He waved and you left, rushing across campus.
   The lights were just flickering on and it was a clear night, a good night.Â
   You raced into the dorms, quickly showering and heading to your room to change. You wrapped your towel around yourself and moved out of the bathroom. You stopped, hearing a subtle rattle. You paused, silently shuffling towards Ae-cha and Lee-minâs room.
   Through the crack in the doorway, you saw Lee-min pulling her hair into a ponytail. She then reached into her bag and unscrewed an orange bottle. The white pills shaking as she poured out at least six. She slammed them back and screwed the cap back on.Â
   You backed up, stepping on the squeaky part of the carpet outside of their room. Lee-minâs head swiveled around so fast you had to stifle a scream. You quickly bolted to your room and shut the door before she could say anything.Â
  You changed as fast as possible. Yeona was out with Hea and the other three girls in your dorm. Ae-cha wanted to meet you at the mall and you needed to be there on time. You were already five minutes behind schedule.Â
   As you pulled on a shirt and sweater, leaving your room, you glanced over at their room down the hall. Lee-min closed her door, exiting. You made eye contact and then hurried down the stairs, flying out of the building swiftly. She didnât try to chase after you.Â
 âUgh I have so much work to do.â Lee-min whined.
âI hear you, girl.â Ae-cha leaned back in her chair at the desk. âI have an essay to write, a speech to memorize, a project to complete, and I need to practice this dance.âÂ
   You sat cross legged on the floor, stretching out your sore muscles. Ae-cha was working hard at her desk and Lee-min was sitting, staring off into space. She quickly shook her head, seemingly regaining focus. You couldnât stop thinking about those pills, the way she easily swallowed all six of them, her blank gaze.Â
âI have two solo dances to memorize, the group dance, and I have to record two songs, one with the group and one solo.â Lee-min placed a hand on her chest, falling backwards on her bed. âThe anxiety is killing me.âÂ
âJust take it easy, okay?â You scrunched your eyebrows together in concern. Your eyes scanned the room. You wanted to know what those pills were.Â
âItâs okay, I have it handled.â She murmured.Â
âAre you sure?â Ae-cha warily looked at her friend, but she didnât look back.Â
âIâm sure.â She said, staring blankly at the ceiling. âI have to outdo myself, I have to push myself as hard as possible or else I might never get a chance.â
âI know, but youâre looking so sick lately.â Ae-cha cut through and you looked over to her. She had spent more time with Lee-min in the past few weeks so obviously she would have noticed the difference.Â
âIâm fine.â
âYouâre not. Youâre so pale and shaky. Please, just take a break.â Ae-cha protested her back hunched over her work.Â
âI canât take a break, Ae-Cha. You know how much this means to me.â She retorted, rolling over and staring at her phone. The other girl made no further comment and you didnât mention the pill bottle.Â
   Lee-min was late for the first dance training session of the day. It was out of character for her. The teacher knew it too. Everyone knew it. People were shifting uncomfortably, eyes glancing towards the door. Lee-min was always early by at least 20 minutes. Now she was late by the same amount of time.Â
   Minsuh tapped her foot and then clapped.Â
âOkay then, since Lee-min has decided to sleep in, weâll be moving on and doing twice the amount of practice today with no break.âÂ
   The room groaned unhappily and a few girls complained about how unfair it was. Then the door flew open and Lee-min stood in the doorway with her bag and looking like hell. Her eyes had dark circles, her skin was so pale and gray she could be the concrete on the sidewalk. Her hands were shaking, her legs were too.Â
  You looked her up and down. You wanted to ask if she was alright, but the room was silent as she took a place next to you and Ae-cha. Park Hea watched her, a dark look in her eyes. She scoffed and looked away, getting into position. Minsuh cleared her throat.Â
âYouâre late, Lee-min.âÂ
âI know, Iâm sorry.â Lee-min whispered.Â
âDonât do it again. Weâll be going without any breaks today. Everyone can thank Lee-min.â Minsuh narrowed her eyes. âCome on, everyone, thank your fellow trainee.âÂ
âThank you, Lee-min.â Everyone murmured and you gulped, feeling the piercing stare of every single girl.Â
  Lee-min stood stiff as a brick, her head still held tall. She didnât seem bothered in the slightest. You were sure you would have cried if it were you.Â
  This would not be the last time she was late in the following week. She was late again for the afternoon workout session and this was a lot less forgivable.Â
âOkay, well, since Lee-min has decided to be late today, weâll be three times the sets we usually do.â The trainer said, her voice annoyingly perky. Everyone shot a glare at the doorway, just waiting for Lee-min.Â
   The girl finally arrived a few minutes into the first set and by the second extra set you had to do, she was complaining loudly. The other girls were sweating and one girl looked close to puking. You were blinking back spots, your stomach rumbling unhappily.Â
âI canât believe we have to do three extra sets.â Lee-min whined and you and Ae-cha exchanged glances.Â
âYou should be on time next time.â Ae-cha said through gritted teeth, dropping into another pushup. You wondered why she wore long sleeves to a workout session, but she seemed not to mind.Â
âIâm trying my best.â The other complained, pulling down the bar towards herself.Â
âShut up!â You snapped, going into another sit up. âYouâre the reason weâre in this mess. You donât get to complain.âÂ
Lee-min looked away, ashamed, her ears turning red. âI know, Iâm sorry.â She said softly. You pushed her shaking hands out of your mind.Â
   You had an awful feeling in the pit of your stomach. It was a sinking feeling, a nightmare-ish sort of anxiousness. It wasnât just because of the impending final assessment, you had practiced enough not to fear it, but there was just something off.Â
  The dorm was loud today. Everyone was rushing around getting things down. A few girls were decorating for the holidays that were coming up and others were hurrying off to practice.Â
   It was a rather cheery time to be feeling such dread.Â
âHey, have you seen Lee-min?â You asked Yeona, knowing they were in a separate sub-unit together.Â
âNo,â Yeona said, her voice bitter, so you looked up from your book. âI keep texting her to practice with me, but she never responds. God, such a bitch.âÂ
You frowned and closed your book. âSheâs really busy. I know sheâs working hard.â
âYeah sure.â She went back to scrolling through her phone.Â
âShe is.â You argued.
âYou donât need to prove it to me. She should just prove it by smashing it out of the park and debuting, yeah?â Yeona responded lazily, rolling over with her back facing you to signal the conversation being over.Â
âFine. Iâm going to check on her.âÂ
  As you got closer to their room that dread grew heavier and heavier. There was something off. Within the cheery laughter and loud conversations, in between the ruckus and childish arguments of the dorm, there was a silence. A silence in a place where there was usually life. You knocked on the door, but it was already slightly open.Â
   You saw Lee-min, lying on the ground. She seemed as if she was sleeping, but your gut was screaming. You approached carefully and knelt down, shaking her slightly.Â
âLee-min?â You whispered. You glanced around then shook her harder. âLee-min?â You asked again, louder, more hurried. The texture of her skin was rough and un-moisturized, her lips were depleted of color.Â
âLee-min? Oh my god oh my god.â You rolled her over and she stared blankly at the ceiling.Â
  A knocked over bottle of pills lay to the side and you pulled back, your hands shaking. You needed to get help. You needed to get her help.Â
  You scrambled backwards, flinging open the door.Â
âH-help! I need help! Someone!â You shouted. âM-my friend sheâs-sheâs passed out or something I need help someone call an ambulance!â You cried.Â
   But all the girls in the hall looked over at you with cold, unforgiving, eyes. You realized then that no one was here to help you. No one cared. Lee-min was just another obstacle out of the way.Â
   You yelled for help again before fumbling for your phone. You didnât know CPR, you hadnât paid that much attention in health class and you didnât want to fuck it up.Â
   You dialed 1339 and waited impatiently. Then, out of the corner of your eye, like a goddess ascending from heaven, Park Hea rounded the corner.Â
âWhatâs going on?â She demanded. âI heard all this shouting.âÂ
   You turned to her, your lips beginning to quiver as the dial tone continued. âItâs L-Lee-min. Sheâs, I donât know, I donât know!âÂ
   You felt the wetness roll down your face and Heaâs eyes softened. She pushed past you and sucked in a breath. Then, in an inexplicable act of kindness for her, she knelt down beside Lee-min and placed her hands on her chest.Â
âOkay, you call for help, Iâll start CPR.â She commanded like a nurse on the battlefield. âSheâs not breathing, tell them.â she leaned down, beginning CPR and leaning in to check her airflow.Â
âSh-shit her breathing is practically non-existent.â Hea said, her voice stuttering slightly.Â
  The sound of ribs cracking made you cringe as Hea continued chest compressions.Â
  The ambulance came and they stretchered Lee-min out. You sat on the floor of their room, staring blankly at the wall. You couldnât stop reliving that moment when you realized, everyone was looking out for themselves, they didnât care that a girl was dying. You were in a state of shock. It was like the world stopped spinning.Â
   How stupid you had been, ignoring the problems that were happening, ignoring the suffering of others, brushing past everything in an attempt to make everything okay. Your stomach growled. You placed your hands on your stomach, pulling your knees close to your chest.Â
âWhy did you help? No one else bothered.â You whispered.
  Hea was sitting on her bed, staring at the place where Lee-min had laid. Her eyes flicked up to look at you. Your eyes were blank, cold, hollow. The realities were crashing down on you. And you realized what you needed to do to survive.Â
  You needed to fight and you needed to make decisions that might be against what you would do. Because everyone was competition. They werenât your friends, they werenât your family, they were strangers who would kill if necessary. Hea cleared her throat, but her voice still came out rough as she spoke.
âBecause I know thereâs competition, but saving someoneâs life is a basic human dignity. Itâs a no brainer.âÂ
 âBreaking news. The CEO of Sinopec declares that woman in Brooklyn, New York, is not his daughter. More on this at 10.â The news report flashed over the screen in the cafeteria before going back to the drama it was showing originally. Ae-cha was quiet, her head down on the table, her food untouched.Â
âWhatâs wrong?â You asked gently.Â
âI wasnât there for her. How could I have not seen the signs?â Ae-cha whispered.Â
âHey, no one could have known.â But you could have. You could have if you had cared enough at the time, yet you did nothing.Â
   Today was the day. Youâd be doing your final assessment. You woke up at the crack of dawn, along with basically everyone else in the dorm. Your roommates and you silently got ready, it being too early to make so much noise. It was freezing.Â
   The tip of your nose was pink from the cold. You shrugged on a sweater and filed out of the room, following Yeona and the others in a single file line. You looked like you were in some dystopian movie with everyone walking in a line to their assessment.Â
   You spotted some groups from the big apartments watching and you saw Hoseok leaning against a tree with the rest of his group. He waved a little and smiled, almost wincing as you still needed to warm up your face muscles.Â
  You shuffled into the building and the quiet sounds of fabric on wood were the only noises as everyone set down their things. It was about to be a long day, like any other, but this was the most important.Â
âOkay, I have a surprise for you all.â Minsuh clapped with a smile. âAs you all know, your fellow trainee, Lee-min, was injured earlier this week. She has made a speedy recovery and is still able to participate in this assessment!âÂ
   The smile was too forced, everyoneâs smiles were so achingly fake. Lee-min stepped in and you almost fainted. She looked awful. Her collarbones protruded sharply, her cheeks were sunken in. She looked like she should be in the morgue, not doing a final assessment.Â
âTake your places. Letâs begin. Weâll call you group by group, unit by unit.â She tapped her clipboard and started listing names.
You and Ae-cha were first. That gave you a shock and your heart was pounding loudly in your chest as you stepped up. The other girls were seated along the walls and the four representatives for JYM walked into the room. You met with Ae-cha in the middle.Â
âWe got this.â You whispered. âWeâve work so hard.â
   And the music began. Your countless hours with Hoseok were paying off. Each move just came to you and you danced your little heart out. They watched you with a relentlessly harsh stare, not one of them smiling. You didnât care.
   You just kept dancing and singing. The world was beginning to blur as the choreography got more intense. Your breath was running out, your chest was tightening, but you had to keep going.Â
   You blinked back spots. The song was almost over. You just had to make it through another count. One and two and three and four and. You felt off balance. You kept going. Huge spots were starting to form. You kept going.Â
  You couldnât even see the judges. You kept going. You kept going because thatâs all you could do and youâd worked too hard to stop now. Five and six and seven and eight. Done.Â
   You could almost cry. The spots slowly starting sinking away and you went to the edge of the room, searching for your water bottle. You gave a half hearted high five to Lee-min and Ae-cha before collapsing, chugging down as much water as you could.Â
âAre you okay?â Lee-min reached out and her hands were so cold. The room was in black and white. There was no joy in this anymore. Why had you wanted to do this?
âIâm fine.â You said harshly, brushing off her hand. âWhy are you back?â You kept your eyes glued to the next performance as you finished off your water.
âIâm feeling better. I wouldnât miss this for the world.â Lee-min chuckled, but you didnât join her. You turned away from her.Â
âI need to go refill my water.âÂ
âIâll go with you.â
âNo.â You held up your hand, stopping her, and standing.Â
  You excused yourself and went out into the hallway to refill your water. Lee-min followed you out soon after.Â
âIâm sorry, Y/N. I just donât understand why youâre mad at me.â She pleaded with you. You couldnât hear her over the blood rushing through your ears. You saw black and white, but you also saw red red red.Â
âWhy didnât you tell me, huh?â You turned around quickly as she reached for your arm.Â
  The water bottle collided with her hand and flew out of your grasp. You sucked in a breath. Both of your gazes followed the water bottle as it rolled on the ground, spilling onto the floor.Â
âGreat.â You hissed.Â
âYouâre not acting like yourself, Y/N. Are you alright?âÂ
âDo you know what it was like, finding you there? What were you thinking?! Were you...were you trying to end your life?â You swallowed, feeling your throat close up. Lee-min looked away.Â
âNo, I wasnât. I...I just took too many.âÂ
You nodded and slowly bent down, picking up your waterbottle. âPlease justâŠâÂ
  You massaged the crease between your eyebrows. You hadnât even realized how tense you were.
 âJust be careful and take care of yourself. I care about you.â You said softly, turning on your heel and entering the studio once more.Â
   You passed. You got the message the next day. They talked about wanting to put you in the next group possible. Adrenaline was running through your veins. You called the first person you knew should know.Â
âHoseok!â You shouted cheerily.Â
âYeah? Whatâs up?â He asked over the line.Â
âI did it!â You cried, jumping around in your empty dorm room.Â
  Yeona was out shopping with Hea and Ae-cha and Lee-min were in their room. Youâd tell them next.Â
âI passed! They said they want to debut me with the next group!âÂ
   His laugh rang through the speaker and made your insides feel fuzzy with adoration.Â
âThatâs amazing, Y/N. You truly are amazing.â You blushed, knowing he couldnât see it. âHopefully Iâll be seeing you at awards shows!âÂ
âYouâll be seeing me other times outside of idolhood hopefully.â He clicked his tongue and you nodded before realizing he couldnât see you.Â
âOh yeah, definitely.â You smiled. âOkay, Iâm going to tell Ae-cha and Lee-min. Also, how are you?â
âAh, things have been busy as always. You go celebrate! Iâm so excited for you!âÂ
âLove you!âÂ
âLove you.â
   You ended the call and happily skipped out of your room. Then you went over and knocked on their door. You opened the door after the third knock.Â
âAe-cha?â You called out to her and she looked up, dropping her sleeve quickly. You moved forward hesitantly. âWhat was that?â
âNothing.â She said quickly and turned away. âWhatâs up?â
   You went and stood next to her desk. She had an earbud in and math homework splayed out across the wood table.Â
âWhatcha working on?â You inched closer, trying to see what she was hiding under those sleeves.Â
âMath. It sucks. I donât know what a ray is.â
âItâs a line that has a defined beginning point but no end point.â You said, a bit distracted as you leaned over. She didnât seem to notice until you tried to grab her sleeve.Â
âWhat do you think youâre doing?â She cried, withdrawing her arm.Â
Your eyes darkened. âAe-cha. Are you okay?âÂ
âIâm fine!âÂ
âReally? Roll up your sleeves.â
âNo! I-I donât have to!â She scrambled out of her chair, but you caught her arm.
  You pushed up her sleeve quickly and sucked in a breath. You dropped her arm and she hurried to pull down the sleeve.Â
âAe-chaâŠâ Your voice was gentler, kinder as you approached her like a scared animal. With the way her eyes were flying around the room, you suspected she was terrified.Â
âAre you biting yourself?â You murmured. She looked away, not answering the question.Â
âWhy did you come in here?â
  You let her change the subject. The bruising teeth indents in her forearms were enough to tell you the truth anyway.Â
âI just wanted to say,â You sat on Lee-minâs bed and smoothed over the covers. âI passed. Iâm debuting in the next group and their moving my things out in the next few days.â
âOh.â Her eyes went dark, her lips fell away into an un-hideable frown.Â
  There was a squeak and you looked up. Lee-min stood in the doorway. She looked from your sad expression to Ae-chaâs trembling lips and got the message. Park Hea stepped out from behind Lee-min and you knew you were in for it.Â
âSince when did you hang out with Hea, Lee-min?â You asked cautiously.Â
âWeâve always been friends, what are you talking about?â Hea scoffed and went to her bed. Lee-min ignored your question.Â
âHow many times did you audition, Y/N?â Lee-min asked, her voice ticked upwards in mock interest.
  You could tell it was like treading on thin ice right now. Ae-cha looked like she was going to cry at any second and Lee-minâs eyes were furious.
âTwice.â You gulped.
   Lee-min laughed bitterly, holding her stomach while she forced another hoarse laugh.Â
âYou want to know how many times I auditioned?â She went and sat on Ae-chaâs bed across from you. â23 times. I auditioned 23 times and look at me. Iâm still here, training after four years.âÂ
âIâm sorry, Lee-min. That must be tough.âÂ
âYou know nothing, Y/N. Get out.â Her lips were pressed together and you looked to Ae-cha.Â
  She looked away and crossed her arms. Hea simply fixed you with a hard stare. You nodded solemnly, standing and heading for the doorway.Â
âYou guys were really good friends.â
âJust leave.â Lee-min said sternly.Â
  You sucked in a breath and let your eyes flutter shut. You didnât want your last memory of them to be like this. So you simply didnât say anything else. You opened your eyes and turned, leaving that dorm room, that room that you had spent hours in, for the last time.Â
   It was nice to have only one other roommate now. Sadly, it was someone you already had to room with. Yeona was the only girl you knew in your new group and even then, she never spoke to you. It was clear she wasnât happy with the situation either.Â
   There were four other members besides you and Yeona and for some reason, Yeona hated this one girl. She was the youngest at only 16, a few months younger than Yeona. You knew Yeona had wanted to be the maknae of the new group, you just didnât know the lengths she was willing to go to.Â
   It was lunch time. Your group was forced to sit and eat together in your dorms, away from the other trainees. Unless you were in your rooms, everything was a big show.Â
   They had cameras following you everywhere to prepare footage for the debut. You had interviews, songs, and videos to prerecord. The news articles were praising you as the newest up and coming group.Â
âYeona, has always been hilarious. I remember we were roommates as trainees.â You said to the interviewer.Â
   Yeona sat next to you and she had the brightest smile on her face. The biggest youâd ever seen her even muster.Â
âOh yeah, but Y/N was always the messy one.â
âYou would leave your socks everywhere.â You protested and you both giggled as if you were best friends.Â
âAh, thank you guys for taking your time to let us interview you. I hope you have a successful debut!â The interviewer smiled and you both grinned from ear to ear.
âOf course, I hope we do to.â You nodded and nudged Yeona playfully. She returned the gesture and the next day you were trending on twitter for being #soadorable and so on.Â
   The second the camera crew went home, though, you all went your separate ways. Yeona wouldnât even so much as look at you, much less speak to you, before bed. It was a lonely existence, you realized.Â
   You didnât suspect anything to be wrong with the group, but you were more or less strangers pretending to be family. If someone spouted out a lie in an interview, well, you just had to own it.Â
   You didnât realize things were fucked until, well...until you realized, to put it simply. It had been dinner. Yeona was talking rather sweetly with the maknae and everyone else was busy watching TV or in practice rooms downstairs.
   As the younger girl looked away, you watched Yeona pull out a small vial. It was a clear liquid and she tipped the entire thing into her drink.
  You bit your tongue. In the past you would have mentioned it, but it made sense. The less people in the group, the more attention youâd get. You didnât hate your group, okay, but things werenât the best.Â
  You didnât blame Yeona for wanting to poison her. And you werenât going to stop it. Things were different now. When Yeona saw you looking, she winked and went back to her business. You watched the young girl slurp and gulp that drink down all night, your conscience screaming at you.Â
  The girl was taken out of the group later that night, having fallen so ill she was unable to move. They blamed it on a sudden sickness and this reminded you of your brother, someone you hadnât thought about in a long time. You turned away guiltily as they took her out the door and into the ambulance.Â
  You took out your phone. You needed someone to talk to and you knew exactly who.Â
   You flung open the door of the practice room, seeing Hoseok standing there. He turned around, surprised a the sudden intrusion. Relief fell over his face and he smiled as you flew into the room. You dropped your things by the door.Â
âHoseok!â You exclaimed and you didnât hesitate to jump into his arms.Â
âWoah woah, is everything alright? You sounded really bad over the phone.â He said, his arms wrapping around you tightly.Â
âGod, you wouldnât believe what Iâve been through.â You felt safe here, in his arms.Â
   Literally anywhere else, you were at risk of being ridiculed, caught on camera, or berated. You had no one to talk to, but you did have Hoseok. Your back shook as you tried to take in air, but you couldnât. You were panicking. So much had happened, where did you start?Â
âHey, hey, calm down, take a deep breath.â He pulled away and looked you in the eyes, his hair was swept over to one side and slightly fell over his left eye. You nodded and took a deep breath at his command.Â
âGood, good, now tell me everything.â
   And so you did. You told him about Lee-min, about Ae-cha, about Hea, about Yeona and the poisoning of your youngest member. You told him everything.Â
âWait wait, hold on.â His eyes were dark.
   They werenât kind or loving as you finished and you begged for it to be just a trick of the light, but even the fluorescent lights couldnât lighten up the mood. A heavy blanket fell over the conversation.Â
âWhat? Whatâs wrong?â You asked, taking a step back and rubbing your upper arms quickly. You were freezing, you were always cold.Â
âYou knew one of your members was poisoned...and you did nothing?â His voice had a tone so accusatory, a tone you knew you deserved but it still hurt.Â
âY-yes.â You said, hanging your head in shame. He backed away and then paused. He looked you up and down.Â
âYouâve changed.â He said quietly, stiffly.Â
   Hoseok took another few steps back and you took a step forward. It was like an awful dance where he was trying to run away and you were begging him not to. He grabbed his bag and carefully stepped around you.
âI canât believe I fell for you, Y/N. Youâre not at all who I thought you were.â He frowned. âI donât think I can be with someone who...who is okay with such a horrible act happening right in front of them.â
   You wanted to scream, to beg for his apology, but you were stupid. The only thing you could think in that moment was, âYou wonât tell anyone?âÂ
   His eyebrows raised in disbelief. âI really should, you know? But you know what? Just for you, I wonât.â He said, his teeth gritted and his voice menacingly angry. âGoodbye, Y/N.â He slammed open the door of the practice room and left, leaving you in his wake.Â
 âY/N. We need to speak with you.â A staff member tapped your shoulder while your group was practicing the choreography for your debut song.
   You nodded and followed her out into the hall and up the stairs to the office level. At the end of the hall was the main office. You were wracking your mind trying to figure out if youâd done something wrong. Maybe Hoseok told on you? But you trusted him still, you trusted he would stick to his word.Â
   The staff member knocked on the door and there was a muffled come in. She nodded, opening the door. She gently pushed you towards the opening and you looked at her confused. She had a serious look on her face and you walked in, already on edge.Â
   The office was of dark cherry wood. The seats were a red leather and the windows were tall and wide, taking up a whole wall. It over looked the green area on campus and trainees were milling around.Â
   JYM sat, his chair facing the windows.Â
âSit.â He commanded, spinning around. You gulped and swallowed, although your tongue was stuck to the roof of your mouth.Â
âWhat did you need to see me for?â You asked. He was shadowed in the light, his silhouette falling over yours.Â
âI have some unfortunate news for you, Y/N. Iâll cut to the chase. Your brother has passed away from illness.âÂ
   The rest of his words grew muffled. Your eyes became glazed and unfocused. The world spun. Spots started to appear in your vision, you felt light headed. The heaviness in your heart grew heavier. Your brother. Your precious older brother. Enough was enough. You had to see him. You had put work before them before. You didnât want to disappoint your mother again.Â
   You slid backwards in your chair and stood up. Your eyes were watering and you choked out your response.Â
âAre you alright?âÂ
âI need to see him. I need to be there for the funeral.â You whispered. JYM nodded.Â
âI thought youâd say that. Well, Iâll let you go, but your group wonât wait for you, should we decide to debut...early.â He stared at the chunky rings on his fingers. âThatâs just how it works here, honey.âÂ
âWhat?â Your face paled and you couldnât find yourself formulating an answer.Â
  You had sacrificed so much to be in the position you were in. You couldnât give it up. The possibility of them debuting without you was just not an option.Â
âIâll stay.â You said, your voice hoarse. He smiled.Â
âGood choice. Now, hereâs the phone. Iâm going to have you tell them yourself.âÂ
   You were mortified. He was going to have you call? Then it would look like it was your idea, and you knew exactly what game he was playing in this moment. Blood v.s. Water. You bit your lip, taking the phone and dialing their number. Water.Â
âOh, Y/N, itâs so great to hear from you. I suppose youâve heard about-â
âYeah.â You interrupted your father. âI canât make it, sorry.â You tried to keep your voice level.Â
âBut, your brother just-just died.â Your mother responded and you could tell she just ripped the phone away from your father.Â
âI canât make it, mom.â You repeated. âIâm debuting soon. I have no time.âÂ
âSurely you can make time.â Now she was pleading with you.Â
âIâm sorry.â You whispered and hung up.Â
âWell, I hope you have a wonderful debut, Y/N.â JYM smiled and waved you off. You hated that man.Â
   The world was spinning again. You werenât grounded. You had nothing and no one to ground yourself to. It was like you were floating in space, mindlessly practicing for hours on end, pulling on fake smiles.Â
   You blinked away spots as Yeona, your dance captain, clapped.Â
âLetâs do it again.â She commanded. And no one argued. You got back into position and the music started.Â
   This time, however, as you dropped into the ground portion of the dance your legs gave out. You couldnât hoist yourself up and when you tried to, you fell over with a loud thump. The world started growing blacker, tinging at the corners of your vision like a burning photograph.Â
   You paid no mind to the gasps of your teammates. The music was halted and you tried to get up, failing miserably. Someone helped you sit up and you blinked, your vision slowly peeling back. Yeona crouched in front of you.Â
âY/N? Are you alright?â
âIâm fine.â You managed to growl out. âQuit trying to help me out, we all know you hate me.âÂ
âWhat? Y/N, I donât-I donât hate you. I care about your health at least.â Yeona murmured sadly. âHave you been eating?âÂ
âYes.â You answered immediately.Â
âIâm going to take that as a no.â Yeona pursed her lips.Â
   For some reason, you felt a boil of anger brewing and rising. It spilled out of your mouth before you could even think. You shoved her off.Â
âJesus christ! Let me go! Iâm fine!â You snapped loudly, standing and letting your fingers curl into fists. âItâs like you guys are always trying to set me up for failure!âÂ
âWhat?â Yeonaâs face was in a state of shock and she looked away. âI donât know what youâre talking about, Y/N. Weâve been trying to reach out to you, you just never wanted to go places with us.âÂ
âShut up! Shut up!â You hissed, covering your ears.Â
âI think you need to take some time to ground yourself.â Yeona shoved you towards the door, pushing your bags into your hands. âIâll request for them to let you go home for a few days.â She was quite strong for how she looked and you tried to dig your heels in to no avail.Â
âNo! No! Youâre trying to get rid of me!â You screeched hysterically.Â
âIâll make sure nothing happens while youâre gone. Now go get some rest, Y/N.â She then pushed you the last step out of the door and shut the room, locking it tight.Â
   You had always hated the country life. The rolling hills and beige colored landscape made you sick. Things were slow here and you wanted everything now now now.Â
   You pulled up to the faded blue house you used to call yours. It was a family home with no family in it anymore. There was a light on inside that you could see, but nothing else. The place looked like it was falling apart.Â
   You stepped through the rotting wood fence and shouldered your bag, taking a deep breath. There was one thing you liked; the clean air. You walked up the steps, your feet echoing loudly. The slight rustle of trees swaying in the wind was the only noise you heard as you knocked and waited. The door slowly creaked open.Â
   Your mother looked older. She had dark circles under eyes, her bones looking almost fragile. You hated seeing her this way. She was dressed in all black. She looked you up and down before simply stepping to the side. You went inside, glancing around the familiar halls and doorways of your home.Â
her voice sounded tired, âWhat are you doing here?âÂ
âThis is my home, is it not?âÂ
âYouâre not very welcome here.âÂ
âI donât see how anything has changed there.â You snapped, heading upstairs without a second thought.Â
   The house felt cold, abandoned. You paused slightly, your anger fading away for a split second as you passed by your brotherâs old room. You remember him accidentally slamming your fingers in the doorframe in an extremely violent game of tag.Â
âSo, heâs really gone.â You said, entering his room and running your fingers along the dresser.
   Dust had already begun to collect on his things. He would have freaked out if he could see it now. His room was always spotless. You were the messy one and it drove him nuts. As you grew older, you couldnât see eye to eye anymore. You were fundamentally different.Â
âHe is. The funeral was yesterday.â Your mother trailed behind you, careful not to step on anything.Â
âI see.â You gripped your bag tighter.
   You went through the connecting bathroom. You could almost imagine him sitting on his bed, screaming his head off that there was dust on the carpet, you could see him paralyzed with fear.Â
   Your mother always paid special attention to him, came running at his every beck and call. You used to be jealous of this, but not that you thought about it, you realized he must have had a sad existence.Â
âI feel bad for him.â You whispered, setting your bag down on your bed.Â
âWhy?â You mother asked harshly.Â
âHe must have lived a sad life.â You said plainly. âIn a constant state of fear.âÂ
âI guess, but your father and I...we tried hard to give him a good life.âÂ
âI know.â You said softly.
   And you could forgive your mother in this moment. All the things she had missed in your life, all the milestones, because of your brother. She never got the pleasure to see you off to school in the morning or help fix you up when you were injured.
   She was always with your brother. You walked towards her and engulfed her in a hug. You wanted that motherly love and affection that you had missed. But only now did you realize you didnât miss anything.Â
   Your mother had always been a tough woman, all teeth and bite. She pushed you off of her.Â
âDonât touch me.â She said coldly. âYouâre not welcome here, Y/N. I suggest you leave.âÂ
   Your heart plummeted and you nodded. Your soul left your body. The last of your humanity that was not sucked out of your soul was your deep love for your mother. Everyone loved their mother, deep deep down. And now that piece had been ripped out too.Â
   The backstage was in a state of panic. You stayed perfectly still as the stylists pulled and tugged at your hair. The makeup artists brushed foundation and lipstick over your lips.Â
   Blush was applied and eyeshadow was smeared on. You plastered a smile on your face. The cameras were on you for backstage looks. What part of your life wasnât videotaped at this point?Â
   Yeona was talking to a stylist and there was a light chatter. The panic was only caused because one of your group members had spilled water all over her costume.Â
   This cued endless berating of someone that was not you, finally. The crowd was loud as they waited for your debut. You squeezed your hands together nervously.Â
   You could do this. This was what you were trained to do.Â
âYouâll be great.â The stylist smiled kindly and you wearily smiled back.Â
âThank you.â You whispered.Â
    You were a shell, a mere body with no life behind your eyes. You didnât know if anyone had noticed, but Yeona had been nicer recently. It didnât matter to you, she still poisoned someone.Â
   You shifted uncomfortably.Â
âAlmost done.â The makeup artist brushed glitter over your nose and cheeks. âThereeeee weeee gooo.â She said slowly and then stepped back, admiring her work. âYou look amazing.â
    She then excused you and your manager stepped into the room.Â
âCome on, ladies, we got to go. Debut in five.â He shouted into the crowded room.Â
    This led to a last minute touch up frenzy before you were being pushed out onto the stage. You spotted Lee-min, Ae-cha, and Hea standing in the wings. They watched you with harsh glares. You couldnât find it in you to be bothered. You were just tired. Oh so tired.Â
    You slowly moved into your starting pose and the lights came up. The crowd began chanting your names and the music began. Your adrenaline was through the roof. Your body moved on instinct alone.Â
    You sang your parts, you danced everything right, and the black spots in your vision were normal occurrences now. Blood v.s. Water? they had asked you. You wanted the sea.Â
    You rushed past your mother with a giggle. The poor old woman raced after you, crying out for you to slow down. The busy streets of Seoul had you mesmerized. The bright flashing lights and crowded sidewalks drew you in, beckoning you to join them.
   You wanted to get lost in this mess, this noise, this beautiful city. This was one of the few times you had with your mother, but you didnât have time to think about that. You had a world to explore.Â
   The sun was brilliant. Life was alright, as alright as it could be for a seven year old child alone in the streets of Seoul. Your mother pushed through the crowd, quickly losing sight of her little girl, the girl with the bright red coat and chubby cheeks. The cars whizzed by, drivers glancing to look at this, supposedly, lost little girl.Â
   You maneuvered around peopleâs legs and everything was so so big. The buildings soared high, the world was huge and you wanted to explore it. Music blasted, a mixture of every genre as you went around the different bends and into the busy shopping center.Â
  Your mother followed you, shouting your name, but you paid her no mind. You were focused. You kept hearing this music, this melody that made your ears perk upwards, You followed the trail, skidding along the tiles.Â
  Finally, you reached a store window. There were TVs and speakers blasting music. You braked, halting your rampage with such force, you waved your arms for balance.Â
   On screen there were angels. They were dancing and singing, smiling and perfectly proportioned, each a porcelain doll of beauty. And in the moment, as you watched them, you wanted to be them. They were called idols, and you couldnât think of a better word.Â
âY/N!â Your mother caught up to you, her chest heaving. âYou canât just run away like that!âÂ
âMom, I want to be like them!â You pointed to the screen, your face lighting up. âThatâs what I want to do!âÂ
  She glanced at the screen and then sadly looked back at you. She knelt down and took your hands.Â
âNo you donât, honey. Those people are suffering, greatly, theyâve had to work so hard, and for what?âÂ
âWhat do you mean? How can they be suffering?â You looked wildly back at the screen.Â
âThey donât have what you and I have, love.â She gently pressed her finger to her chest, pointing to her heart. âIn here,â She pressed her finger to your chest. âAnd here.âÂ
   You had finally gotten everything you wanted. Your fame, your fans, your music. Your eyes went to the dark crowd, searching wildly for the affirmations you desired, but it was just a black abyss of bobbing lights.
   No one you knew was there to cheer you on anymore. The eyes of your past lover, hidden in the crowd, gone from sight, you were reminded of the darkness surrounding you.Â
   You stood with five other girls, of whom you barely knew, and watched the three you left behind stare from the wings. You were surrounded, but oh so alone. And you finally had the answer to the question youâd been asking yourself. You had chosen water over blood, strangers over love, and there was no going back.Â
   As you stood, drenched in sweat, muscles shaking, breath heaving, you asked yourself again, were you happy? You took another, deep, shaking breath. The lights slowly went down. You plastered an even larger grin on your face, your muscles working hard to keep your lips still.Â
   The cameras panned away and your group all went their separate ways, not even bothering to say anything to each other. Your manager was barking orders, the staff paid you no mind as you exited.Â
   You walked right out of that building, right out into the cold, frigid air. The cars passed by without a care in the world. No one noticed you had left. It was as if you were a ghost, simply passing through on your way to some other side.Â
   You watched your breath puff in the air, your skeletal frame shook in the wind. The little white clouds expelled from your lips was the only sign of life as you stared blankly out into the vast city night.Â
    Of course you were happy. How could anyone not be happy with this?
Even when you were little, you always wondered why people do the things they do. And itâs not until you find yourself to be the person in question that you finally understand that sometimes there is really no good answer.Â
inspired by this drabble that I posted after having a dream
âą âą âą âą âą
âMaybe...Iâm not good enough,â you confide. But to that, the teen boy before you shook his head in dissent. Â
âBelieve me, weâre going to make it...together.â He then bent down until his face was level to yours before making a demand you would soon come to wish he hadnât.Â
âPromise me.âÂ
In that moment, you were just as hopeful as he was. And so you did, nodding in agreement. How could you not when he waited for your answer, looking so deeply into your eyes?
But it wasnât fair. He had you make a promise you couldnât keep. A promise where no matter how hard you wanted to keep it, you had no control over it in the end.Â
Why would he do that?
It started with Seulgi, Jeno, and Taeyong. Then him, Irene and Lami. Time seemed to pass dreadfully quick every time another name was revealed and it wasnât yours. 2013 was gone in the blink of an eye, and while you trained everyday to be the next name, another year passed without your introduction to the world.Â
2015 comes, despite your will for it to not to, and it seems that all your friends are gone. Theyâre off recording rookie stations, making appearances, or in his case, hosting a National Music Show. The final blow is when Yeri is added to Red Velvet and three more female trainees that are not you, make their official appearances on Mickey Mouse Club. It was then that you realized it was too late.Â
It was then that you realized, you were not going to be debuting under SM Entertainment.Â
Your age, while not old, would definitely pass the prime debut age before the next SM girl group is introduced. And by now, you had been training for three years, to no avail. Of course there were many learned skills from some of the highest quality instructors in Korea, but in the end, none of it was enough. Your determination wasnât enough. Your passion wasnât enough. Your promise to him wasnât enough.
And so you made the call to your parents back home, breaking the news to them over the phone that you did not want to do this anymore. Your mother asked if you were sure. Your father encouraged you to do what you felt was best. But what option in this scenario was âthe bestâ? You stick it out, waiting for the day someone else tells you that your dream is over? Or throw the towel in now, and try to salvage whatever bits of youth you have left while simultaneously giving up your dream with no one else to blame but yourself?Â
Communicating your decision to your understanding parents, a ticket is booked to bring you home right away. After speaking with the trainee managers, you tell them that while you are so appreciative of everything youâve received here, that you would like to leave. Having dealt with this kind of situation many times before, they understand your request. They also understand when you ask them not to tell anyone, so that youâd have the opportunity to break the news yourself. What you didnât know then, was that you wouldnât succeed in telling everyone yourself like youâd wanted. Heck, youâd only have two measly days to collect all your things before leaving the dorms forever.Â
âą âą âą âą âą
The first morning comes, and you tell your roommates, also asking them not to spread the word before you go. Once youâre in school, you inform your homeroom teacher as well as a few classmates you grew close to while in Korea. It feels a bit weird that you still came to school despite the fact that you were departing the country in less than 48 hours. But you wanted closure to your life here, and that meant saying your goodbyes to those who meant something to you. To be honest, you enjoyed everything about your trainee life. You learned things you knew you never would have without this opportunity, and became nearly fluent in a tongue that was foreign to you three years prior. Friends from all over the world convened in this life that you had the privilege of living, and you couldnât be more thankful.Â
The train ride back to the dorms however, does not carry any âgoodbyesâ or âgood lucksâ like you had exchanged with your classmates. You canât bring yourself to tell him, and so you chat aimlessly about your math class and the good weather, completely unable to let the truth fall from your lips. Thinking about it, the truth freezes you up. If he finds out, heâll know I broke our promise.Â
Blankly staring ahead, your mind goes aloof from the voice next to you, and it's a few beats before you notice him expectantly looking at you once again. But when you blankly look back at him, he pops a comforting little smile, just enough to show his dimples shallowly.Â
Before you can say anything, he leans back into his seat, letting his long lashes flutter shut. The rumbling of the train surrounds you both, and youâre too busy staring at his face to notice that his hand has slipped from the backpack on his lap to reach gingerly for your hand in the left pocket of your coat. You feel your eyes widen at the unexpected contact, but he doesnât see as he remains unmoved in his reclined position next to you. Despite your panic, he still succeeds in wrapping his warm palm over your cold digits tucked at your side. While the shock running through your veins may feel fresher than ever, it isnât the first time something like this has happened.Â
The first time was a little less than a year ago. Dozing off on the early train to school, you were woken by a firm grasp through your fingers. They dragged you up from the seat, all the way until you shook him off before anyone would notice you exiting the station hand-in-hand. No words were exchanged over the incident, so you definitely donât expect for when it happens a second time.Â
With both of you standing in the middle of a crowded, morning-rush train with nothing to hold onto, he suddenly gripped your hand so tight that you were sure it would fall off by the end of the ride. From then on, every time the two of you had to stand, he would reach out for you, claiming that you would fall if he didnât. Oftentimes you could have sworn he pushed you towards the middle, away from any doors or poles for you to steady yourself with, just so he could use it as an excuse to grab your hand again.Â
Your suspicions on his odd need for hand holding is confirmed when you begin departing school together. Even though the two of you leave at a time when itâs no longer crowded, he still reaches down to scoop your hand in his.Â
âWhy would you do that?â you asked him, looking down at your conjoined hands and failing to retreat your own.
âNo reason.â Heâd grin and look off somewhere not at you. You canât deny the tugs you felt at your heart when he grinned like that. It made you feel small and sheepish when his whole presence, and especially his hand, felt so much bigger than yours in every way possible. No cell in your body dared to pull away, so you let him do it.
But then it happens again. And again. And you let it happen so many times that he begins to do it comfortably, or rather habitually, everyday on the train ride back to the dorms. You know itâs risky. Thereâs a lot at stake, and definitely some rules being broken. But you couldnât bring yourself to pull away. Perhaps he knows this, and thatâs why he always smirks as if heâs accomplished a great feat each time your hand is secured in his much larger one.
And now here you sit. Eyes widened at the same smirk youâve seen for months now, gracing the lips of a seemingly sleeping teen boy. But you know heâs not asleep. The old woman sitting across from you two can probably tell heâs not asleep either. So of course when you make eye contact with her as you frantically look around to see if anyone has noticed your little rule-breaking escapade, you see that sheâs wearing a knowing smile as a heated blush rises to your cheekbones. The thought of being caught has you jerking your hand out of your coat pocket, and slightly shoving him away from you.
The actions seem to catch him off guard as he finally opens his eyes, shocked and widened enough to mimic yours. His arms cling to his backpack again as it nearly dropped from when you shoved him, and heâs looking at you again with those eyes.Â
âCan you stop doing that?!â you scold him in a low whisper. Your eyes scan the few people around you, and other than the old woman, no one seems to notice anything.Â
âDoing what?â he responds in a low voice, but not quite a whisper. He sounds genuinely confused, and it makes you groan inwardly at the thought of having to spell it out. Instead of being specific, you just respond,
âPeople can see us you know?â You realize how ridiculous you must sound with only 6 other people in the entire train car. He chuckles once at your reply and settles with,
âOk, Iâll stop doing that.â Again before you can respond, heâs leaning back and shutting his eyes. The only difference being that this time, his arms are crossed neatly over his bag, pulling it snugly toward his chest. And while youâve stopped questioning him verbally since his âno reasonâ reason for always needing your hand in his, you couldnât help but wonder,
Why would he do that?
Other than the train, he never came close to any contact with you. Of course, most of your time was spent training or at the dorms, so itâs not like he had many opportunities. There were some occasions where he and a few other trainees invited you to the Han River to play basketball, but you could never keep up with them, so normally you ended up just watching. Even then, he never showed much interest in you despite being out of the companyâs watchful eye, so you figured everything between you was surely meant to be a secret kept only for the train.
Those thoughts occupied your mind on the ride back to the dorms, and soon youâve forgotten all about the fact that youâre literally scheduled to be in a different country in less than two daysâ time. By the time you reach the station, your head is filled with countless memories between the two of you from the past year, and it feels like your brain might just explode. Wanting to get away from the source of your headache, you're standing at the exit doors before he even has the chance to get up from his short nap. The walk from the station to the dorms is a lot quieter than usual, since you are trying to keep a step in front of him to avoid having to make conversation.Â
Normally, he would be incessantly bombarding you with âwould you ratherâ games or âwhat are you listening to recently?â inquiries. But today heâs hanging back, and you chalk it up to the fact that heâs giving you space since you all but shoved him off his seat on the train. What you donât expect is that in the final moments of the walk back, heâs made an effort to catch up to you, keeping pace next to your much shorter strides. You feel again that heâs looking down at you, waiting for you to look up at him. When you donât, he clears his throat, and you watch from the side of your eyes as he hesitantly rubs the front of his neck.
âA bunch of us are going to play basketball again tomorrow night,â he starts. You look up at him then. âIâm going a bit later since Iâm MCâing tomorrow, but I was wonderingâŠâ he pauses and looks away as if to think.
âYou want me to go?â The question comes out before you know it, and youâre mentally smacking yourself for letting it escape.
âWell, yeah...butâŠâ another pause.Â
âWith me. I want you to go with me.â Gosh darn those eyes. What was it about those eyes that made you feel like falling into his chest like putty so that he could gather you up in his arms there. The combination of âI want youâ and âwith meâ has sent you wheeling a bit, and you havenât fully processed what he just asked of you. But not wanting to stall an answer, you quickly nod once and look right back at him saying,
âMâkay.â Mâkay? MâKAY?? You thought to yourself. THATâS what you come up with??Â
Going through another mental face palm moment, you donât catch his smile. Itâs one that is different from his smirks, or his little pressed ones he offers as comfort. In fact, itâs so giddy looking that itâs almost childish. But again, you donât see it because youâre too busy reprimanding your own poor choice of words. Little did you know that your words just made the one and only Jung Jaehyun very, very happy.Â
Once you arrive at the dorms, the two of you part, promising to see the other tomorrow. And it's then that it suddenly dawns on you that you will not have much time left with the happy boy here in Korea. In fact, heâd likely be gone all day tomorrow due to his MC schedule, and the only time youâd get with him isâŠ
âŠat basketballâŠ
...where heâll be busy playing nine other people while you sit on the side.Â
Stupid, you think of yourself while shoving things into a luggage much too small to fit the last three years of your life in.
âą âą âą âą âą
Basketball went as youâd expected. He and you arrived later than the rest, which allowed some banter on the walk over to the courts. But you begrudgingly accepted that once the game started, he was no longer free to talk. What you didnât expect to happen was that heâd ask you to stay with him a bit longer while everyone else left. You also didnât expect for him to confess that he liked you at half-court, just before leaving a kiss on your unsuspecting lips.Â
The kiss is warm, a little salty from the sweat that's accumulated on his own lips, but nonetheless you once again fail to retreat. When you asked himâfor what seemed like the hundredth timeâwhy he would do that, he immediately chimes,
âYou told me to stop holding your hand, so I had to improvise.â He shrugged, and as expected, heâs grinning like a fool proud for delivering the line heâs definitely rehearsed a few too many times.Â
âOh,â you blinked up at him. âOkay.â was all you could say.
He laughed a loud, full sounding laugh, crouching dangerously close to your face in the process. You canât look at him, so you turn your head away slightly, trying to hide the intense warmth you could feel heating up your face. When his laughter finally died down, your cheeks had returned to an unsuspecting shade, and he was peering down at you in a way that you could only describe as...longing?Â
âI meant what I said you know. About liking you.â He whispers when you look up at him. Upon hearing his words you canât help the warmth that starts to fill your face again. Youâve never heard his voice so tender like this before.Â
âI know I laughed earlier, but...I really do like you...a lot.â The goofy smile you had missed the day before takes form on his face, and again you feel like absolute putty in his presence. You donât even think about what to say next before you also find yourself confessing,
âI really like you too.â You start off well, but look down in embarrassment to say the next bit. âLike, a lot.â You notice that your voice is trembling, and canât tell if itâs because you're nervous or angry.
You hate that he kissed you. Not that you hated the kiss itself, but fact that you knew this was probably the last time you would ever see him. And even though your final night together was truly spectacular, he was going debut and you would just be that one trainee girl who was lucky enough to kiss Jung JaehyunâŠand who broke her promise to him.Â
Not only would you not debut with Jaehyun, but you would be leaving him altogether. With your flight slated to leave first thing the next morning, there was no chance that even if he debuted alone, that you would be...together.
âą âą âą âą âą
Your heart aches as the plane begins to take off into a sky of fluffy white clouds. Because you no longer have to wonder, Why would he do that? He made the âwhyâ clear to you the night before.Â
Why did he have to do that? Seems to be the new question that rang in your mind over and over as you fought back the tears that you knew would come. Of course, you never told him you were leaving, but really? On your last night? The pain that welled deep in your chest was threatening to emerge. But you kept it in, not wanting to subject the other airline passengers to the sob-fest that was bound to happen if you let it.Â
In fact, itâs not until youâre back home, and your mom comes into your room that you start crying. Like, really start crying. Every tear that wasnât shed over your failed dream, your abandonment of your first love, and a life you never wanted to lose, finally made its way out in your childhood bedroom. You wanted to let it all go and never have to cry over it again.Â
So you cried all you could that night. You cried out all the disappointments of your dreams of becoming an idol, all the memories of the friends youâd made, and all the heartbreak of the one person who wanted you to stay most.Â
Your mother strokes your hair patiently, letting your sobs fall into her lap.Â
âIâm sorry. Iâm so, so sorry,â is all you can get out. Over and over again like a chant. Nothing was his fault. It never was. It was you.
âShh...Itâs okay, everythingâs going to be okay.â And at that you cry a little harder, knowing that things probably would be okay. Eventually.Â
But you also knew that no matter how many times you said âIâm sorry,â the one person who you really needed to apologize to would likely never have the chance to hear you say it.Â
You made a promise to Jaehyun. And yet you broke it, ran from it, and gave no explanation as to why. The only reason your heart was broken now, was all your own doing.Â
You made that promise to him. You let him hold your hand everyday knowing that it broke the rules. You let him kiss you even when you knew you were leaving. Worst of all, you let him fall for you even though you knew you were someone he couldnât have. And you couldnât help but wonder,
Why would I do that?
a/n: Hello loves~~~I dropped this âdrabbleâ to tie everyone over while I work on the Jeno + Jaehyun series. Funny thing is, this drabble turned into a two part-er and I now have that to work on as well rippppp. Part two will be from the perspective of jaehyun as the original post also describes here. I will warn however, that the coming weeks are my finals weeks and Iâll be hella busy. If I need a distraction, I may post the surfer!Johnny drabble-turned-scenario since itâs the closest to being complete out of all my wips at the moment. But anyways, I hope you enjoyed! xoxo, jewel <3
Sanghoon wouldnât say that he has the best pokerface, but he surely is better at hiding his emotions than Hak Subin.Â
Hak Bonghwaâs only daughter sat in a third chair off to the side while the two main producers at HBH, Fren.z and LeeBoi, worked at the soundboard. Sanghoon was squeezed into the recording booth with Yeetai, Longwei, and Taehyung. Sanghoon didnât think that chanting one verse together would take this long, but theyâve been recording this same part for thirty minutes. He himself was starting to get agitated, Subin looked straight up homicidal.Â
âYou guys need more energy.â LeeBoi critiqued into the microphone.
Subin snorted. âTheyâd have more energy if you gave them a break to rest their vocal cords.â Her statement was overheard through the speaker, but neither of the producers acknowledged the commentary.
âLetâs try it from the top. Remember, more energy.â LeeBoi talked over Subin, ignoring her like usual. Subin rolled her eyes and played with the ends of her hair, her frown somehow drooping more than before.
The recording finally ended when Fren.zâs alarm went off. Their time in the recording studio was up. The trainees exited the studio, thanking all three producers as they passed.
When Taehyung dipped into a bow for Subin, Fren.z chuckled dryly.
âSheâs younger than you, Taehyung. No need to break your back in half.â He laughed. Subin narrowed her eyes at the older producer, giving him a look so icy it made Sanghoonâs eyebrow twitch. Taehyung let out a weak chuckle before leading the other boys out of the studio.
âGod, theyâre awful to her.â Taehyung whispered as soon as they left. âI should have stood up for her, shouldnât I?âÂ
âNah, Subin can fight her own battles.â Longwei reassured his friend, giving the other trainee a clap on the back. A mischievous smirk spread on his face. âI bet she appreciated that adequate bow, though.âÂ
âShh.â Taehyung chuckled, rolling his eyes. âI had to show my appreciation somehow.â
The four boys made their way to the elevator, taking it back up to Trainee Town to complete their training for the day.
When most of the trainees filed out of the practice rooms, Sanghoon decided to stay behind. Lately the stress of showcases, trainee events, and upcoming debut team announcements has been getting to him. He wanted to take some time to do what he really loved: creating his own music.
He knew that all studios were free after three. He took the elevator down to The Dungeons alone, his bags slung over his shoulder. Heâd only stay until four, then heâd head to the dorms and get some shut eye before another day of practice.Â
Sanghoon headed to his favorite recording studio, the Green Room, at the very end of the hall. As he walked down the hallway, he heard a familiar beat coming from the Red Studio. He slowed his pace, wondering if Fren.z or LeeBoi were still here. Sanghoon contemplated turning back just to avoid any awkward encounter with the producers, but then he heard a feminine sounding growl of annoyance.Â
The trainee furrowed his eyebrows and glanced into the studio. At the soundboard was Subin, running her hands through her platinum hair. Suddenly, Subin wheeled the chair she was in back, turning around sharply. Sanghoon and Subin made eye contact, both of them jumping in surprise.Â
Subin, with a hand still over her racing heart, opened the door.
âSanghoon, donât do that again.â Subin sighed, but the corner of her mouth twitched upward ever so slightly into a ghost of a grin.
âSorry⊠I justâŠâ Sanghoon fumbled for the words.
âNo worries, man.â Subin shook her head. âI get sketched out after three anyways. Yâknow, witching hour and shit.âÂ
âYeah,â Sanghoonâs fingers fidgeted with the straps of his bags. He spends so much physical time with Subin that he forgets that they donât really know each other. At all. He wasnât quite sure how to respond to his bossâs daughter.Â
âWhat were you working on?â Sanghoon asked, his eyes darting to the soundboard that Subin was previously sat at.
âOh, yeah,â Subin looked over her shoulder at the equipment. âThe demo you guys recorded earlier sounded like ass once Tweedle Dick and Tweedle Dumbass layered it onto the backtrack. Iâve been trying to fix it, but they created a monster.âÂ
Subin looked back and Sanghoon with a small grin on her face. âWanna hear what Iâve got?âÂ
Sanghoon felt like rejecting the founderâs daughter was not a good idea, so he nodded. Subin let him step into the studio, offering the spare chair next to her at the soundboard.
âSee, this is what it sounded like before I got my grimy little hands on it,â Subin pressed play on her computer. The song that they had recorded earlier sounded so manufactured. So bland. Sanghoonâs dislike seemed to have shown on his face, because Subin clapped her hands together and cackled.Â
âSee? Itâs booty isnât it?â She asked.
âYeah, that sucks.â Sanghoon agreed. Subin chuckled before typing on her computer again.
âAlright, but now this,â She pressed play. âIs how I think it should sound.âÂ
Subinâs version was much better. There was more dimension, more personality. She kept the more messier recordings of them chanting rather than the robotic and uniform chant the other producers preferred. The track sounded exciting and fresh.
Sanghoon tapped his fingers to the beat. As good as it was, it was missing something.
âUh-oh,â Subin turned the volume down. âYou donât like something?âÂ
âNo, no. It sounds great. Really great. ButâŠâ Sanghoon tried to search for the words.
âSomethingâs missing, right?â Subin asked.
âYeah.â Sanghoon nodded. âI think you need some like⊠Adlibs or something.âÂ
Subin nodded. Her eyes darted to the empty recording booth, then back at Sanghoon.
âYouâre a rapper, right?â She asked.
âYeah.â
âDo you think you could improv some cool adlibs?â She asked, a smirk appearing on her face.
Sanghoonâs plan to stay until four was tossed out the window once he and Subin started bouncing ideas off one another. Even if Sanghoon noticed how late it was, he couldnât bring himself to leave. He really enjoyed spending time with Subin. She was chill and took things so simply. Being around Subin was like taking a break from reality, and Sanghoon wasnât ready to return back just yet. It was nearing five in the morning when Subin finally recognized how late they had stayed.Â
âHoly hell, look at the time.â Subin gasped, holding up her cellphone. âWe should probably go. You have practice in a few hours.âÂ
âDonât remind me.â Sanghoon groaned.
âHey, debut announcements come out soon. Hopefully youâll only be a trainee for a little while longer.â Subin comforted him. âJust enjoy the ride. Soon youâll be looking back on your trainee days with nostalgia.âÂ
Sanghoon nodded, taking in her advice. He was just about to leave when a realization hit him.
âHey, are you walking home alone?â Sanghoon paused in the doorway.
Subin chuckled. âDo I really look that weak?â
âNo, but Iâll still walk you to the subway or something.â Sanghoon shifted his bag awkwardly.Â
The producer pouted. âYouâre cute, Sanghoon. But donât worry about it. Iâm ordering an Uber to come pick me up in a few. Itâll be right outside the company, donât you worry.â
âOkay. Cool.â Sanghoon nodded, shifting his weight on his feet. âI guess Iâll see you tomor- in a few hours, then?âÂ
Subin grinned. âYeah. Iâll see you soon. Sweet dreams.â
âYou too.â Sanghoon smiled before closing the door to the studio. He felt as if he had just jumped between worlds. Everything felt a little dazed to Sanghoon as he made it to the elevators, exiting the building on the main floor. As he crossed the street to the subway station, he couldnât help but daydream about making regular late night visits to the recording studios.
MASTERLIST
Hyujinâs POV
âHello, sirâ. I greeted my manager as I entered his office. âYou wanted to see me?â
âYes, Hyunjinâ, he said quickly. âIâll make this brief, I donât want to keep youâ.Â
I nodded, stopping myself from asking impatiently what was going on. I donât have all day, I need to practise!
âRecently we got a new group of traineesâ, my manager said. âAnd though they have a promising future, they need a form of inspirationâ. I swallowed, suddenly dreading what was coming next. âI want you to visit the trainees during their dance practise hours every few days to teach them some extra techniques. I want you to do this for a few monthsâ.
My stomach leapt uncomfortably. âA few months?â, I asked incredulously. This would take up so much time in my day, and I was having enough trouble fitting everything in my schedule as it is!Â
My manager nodded. âI know itâll be difficult at first. But these trainees look up to you, and this is something importantâ. His tone told me heâd made up his mind and he wasnât going to change it. I clenched my jaw and nodded again. âAlright, you can goâ. He dismissed me and I quickly turned to leave. This is probably the worst thing to happen to me in weeks, I thought wretchedly.
Y/Nâs POV
You stretched forward again, feeling your muscles protest. It was hard work being a trainee, and the packed schedule made sure you were tired within a few days of work. Being the newest out of the other trainees, you were farther behind than anyone else, and you felt a solid mental barrier between you and your comrads. You were the outcast, the odd one out. You hoped this feeling wouldnât last too long.
As everyone finished warming up, one of your seniors walked in and called for attention. âFor the next few monthsâ, he said strictly, âone of our idols is going to train you on dance technique. Treat him with full respect, for heâs taking a lot of time out of his schedule just for youâ. His eyes burned into yours.Â
You gulped. An actual idol? Someone famous is going to teach us to dance? You felt your stomach twist uncomfortably. You were barely ready to start dance practise, let alone with a professional performer. You were going to make a fool of yourself, you were sure.Â
After your senior left, chatter rose in the crowd of trainees.Â
âI wonder who it is?â
âMaybe someone from Got7?â
âOr even from a girl group!â
âI bet itâll be a lead dancer of a groupâ.
âOh, I hope itâs someone from Stray Kids!â
You stayed away from the babbling bunch, too nervous to talk. Anyone from any group is bad, you thought awfully. These next months are going to be Hell.
Suddenly, the noise died in an instant. You attempted to look over the heads of the trainees to see who had just entered the room, but their face was obscured as they walked to the front of the class.
Finally, they stopped and everyone bowed deeply. Your heart leapt into your throat when you saw who it was.Â
Hwang Hyunjin, visual and lead dancer of Stray Kids, was looking directly at you. You had a moment of confusion. Whyâs he looking at me like that? Then realised with horror that you had been the only person to not bow and greet him. You quickly stooped, glaring at the floor in pure dread. âHello, itâs an honour to meet youâ, you said so quietly, that if the room had not been hanging in a suffocating silence, no one wouldâve heard you.Â
Hyunjin gave you one more piercing look before addressing the rest of the class. âItâs nice to me all of youâ, he said politely. You heard a peculiar undertone in his voice. Heâs lying, you thought. He doesnât want to be here right now. But you kept your mouth tight shut as he continued. âIâm afraid Iâm not too sure how to go about these lessons, so Iâll start off simple. What was the last part of a cover you all learned?âÂ
A chorus of voices sounded in unison. âYou are by Got7 sunbaeminâ.Â
Hyunjin nodded. âAnd has anyone not learned that dance yet?â
Feeling nauseated, you raised your hand, completely alone. As Hyunjin gave you a questioning look, you explained quietly:Â âI arrived only a few days ago. I came after everyone learned the choreographyâ. You wished you could melt into a puddle and be forgotten. Great first impression, y/n! Real inspiring!Â
You nearly missed Hyunjinâs voice as he called some instructions. âThose who know the choreography can practise and Iâll come over at some point to check your detail. Right now Iâll teach the dance to those who donât know itâ. Your insides writhed. Heâs teaching me the dance. Just me. You regretted ever thinking of becoming a trainee for JYP.
As Hyunjin walked over to you, you bowed again. âIâm so sorry for coming off as rudeâ, you said, trying to keep an even voice. âI havenât gotten completely used to how everything runs hereâ. You felt lame giving these dumb reasons for being purely disrespectful, but you wanted to at least try to justify your actions.Â
âHey, donât worry about itâ, came Hyunjinâs voice, soft and kind, the complete opposite of what youâd heard just before. You looked up in surprise to see him staring at you reassuringly. Though there was still a hint of irritation, you felt that the kindness he was showing was genuine. âI know what itâs like being the new kidâ, he continued. âIt sucks for a long time. But I promise it gets betterâ. He smiled at you, and suddenly your fear and stress washed away. It was as if he had healing powers just by looking at someone.Â
Then he straightened up. âNow, seeing as you havenât learned the dance, Iâm gonna try to teach you at a pretty fast pace, but just say if you canât keep up, alright?â You couldnât even find your own voice, so you just nodded, showing a renewed impatience to learn.
For an hour, both of you went through the steps for the âYou Areâ chorus. You picked the steps up quickly, surprising yourself and Hyunjin, who would watch as you reproduced the steps in near perfection with bright eyes. As you kept practising, you felt pride surge through you, making you feel as if you could dance all day and night.Â
After a while, Hyunjin left you to practise while he checked on the other trainees. Heâd stop by most and watch as they went through the choreography, pointing out where they needed to change an arm position, or if they weren't showing enough detail. You became even happier as you noticed how much he had to correct the others, while heâd hardly given you any negative feedback. You grinned, truly enjoying yourself for the first time since you started training with JYP.
âI hope youâre not getting too comfortableâ, came a snooty voice behind you. You turned to see Yujin, a fellow trainee, looking at you with a sour expression.
You snorted. âIt hasnât even been a week since Iâve been here, and youâre already trying to start trouble for me? Donât waste your timeâ.
She huffed and gave you a pitiful look. âHeâs not showing favoritism, you know. Heâs just teaching you overtime because youâre not good enough to learn with usâ.Â
You tried not to laugh. âWhereâs the logic in that? I know I havenât learned the dance, and I know heâs not showing favoritism at all. I just want to progress like youâ.Â
âHey, whatâs going on here?â Hyunjin walked over, looking curiously from Yujin to me.Â
You exaggerated a light tone. âWe were just discussing the choreography! Yujin was telling me that she thinks sheâs got the best technique out of everyone, and she wanted to show meâ.Â
Yujin gave me a scalding look, but Hyunjin didnât seem to notice as he spoke. âWell, how about I be the judge of that. Show me what youâve got, Yujinâ. He said the sentence testily, like a personal challenge. Yujin forced a smile that didnât stretch to her eyes and prepared to go through the dance.
As the choreography progressed, you noticed how her movements became jerky, and how she seemed to be tightening up her shoulders. She was adding moves that didnât exist in the original dance, and she seemed to slide them in to make up for spaces of time where sheâd danced too quickly. Before sheâd even finished, Hyunjin stopped her.Â
âYou canât freestyle parts of a danceâ, he told her strictly. âWhen youâre in a group, you all need to be in sync. On time, doing the same exact moves. One step out of line, and the entire crowd noticesâ.Â
Yujin pouted, twisting her face. âI wasnât adding any moves to the dance. This is the original choreographyâ.Â
âAre you trying to tell me that I donât know my own seniorsâ dance?â, Hyunjin demanded, his voice suddenly becoming dark and threatening. Youjinâs eyes widened, and before she could even begin to form a sentence he continued. âThen youâre not only taking me for a fool, youâre also taking me for a fakeâ. He approached her, and she didn't move. She just looked down, cowering. âLearn a bit of respect for your seniors, then come back to practiseâ, Hyunjin snarled. âOtherwise, I donât want to see you in this class againâ.
Yujin nodded in silence, and quickly turned to leave the room, walking briskly out of the doorway. Hyunjin turned back to you with an apologetic look in his eyes. âSorry. I didnât want to lose my temper on my first day teaching. Iâve made a poor impressionâ. He sounded lost and discouraged. You had to stop yourself from hugging him. Instead, you just walked to stand next to him, and spoke quietly.Â
âYou have to be a bit harshâ, you said, feeling slightly awkward about comforting an idol. âThatâs the best way we learn. You learned like that too, didnât you? We need to learn quickly what your world is likeâ.Â
Hyunjin looked at you, surprised by your words. âThank youâ, he whispered genuinely. You smiled back at him.Â
Maybe these training sessions wonât be so bad after all...Â
Hyunjinâs POVÂ
âPlease, sirâ, I insisted, pacing in front of my manager. âY/n has a real talent, and training with everyone else is a waste! They could progress so much quicker if they had private lessonsâ.Â
It had already been a month since Iâd started the nearly-daily lessons with the trainees, though to me, it felt like less. Y/n had shocked me time and time again with the speed at which they picked up choreographies. They were too good to stay with the other trainees. If they had private sessions, and practised their singing and rapping a little more, they could debut in the next year!Â
âI told you, Hyunjinâ, snapped my manager, becoming impatient, âWe donât have the staff to teach y/n by themselves. Theyâll have to wait a while before they can have their own lessonsâ.Â
My blood boiled. This wasnât what y/n deserved! They worked their ass off every day, and always with the same hope and passion. I wasnât going to give up on them. Before I could stop myself, I blurted out the only thought in my head. âLet me teach themâ.Â
My manager stared at me, shocked. Heâd known when he got me to work with trainees that I wouldnât like it. Now hearing me ask to take even more time out of my schedule for one specific person was a little too much to process. âHyunjin... youâd have to take another two hours out of each day for itâ.Â
âI donât careâ, I said firmly. âY/n needs to progress, and if no oneâs going to help, then Iâll do itâ.Â
After more insistence, my manager finally gave up, unable to make me change my mind. It was only after I left his office that I realised what I was doing. This is going to be tricky.Â
Y/nâs POV
You smacked your head against the table, after failing to hit your high note after half-an-hourâs trying. What you really wanted to do was dance. Learn new choreographies, sharpen my technique, see Hyunjin again... You shook your head. Iâm getting way too distracted. You started singing again when you heard a knock on the door.  You got up quickly and checked who was waiting outside. You jumped in surprise to see... âHyunjin?â
He smiled awkwardly at you. âSorry to interrupt your practiseâ. His face had gone red.
âUmm, itâs nothing, reallyâ, you reassured him quickly. âI need a break, anywayâ. He smiled again, though the colour in his face still hadnât faded. âDid you want something?â, you pushed.Â
âOh, uhh yeah! I have some good newsâ. You raised your eyebrows questioningly. âBecause you learn dances so much quicker than the other trainees, I felt like it was a shame to leave you in those sessions. So... Iâve managed to organise new private dance sessions for youâ.Â
You stared at him. âReally? Are you serious?â He nodded. You tried to conceal the excited tone in your voice as you asked: âI thought there werenât enough teachers for that. They kept declining me when I asked for more lessonsâ.Â
Again, Hyunjin nodded. âThatâs because there isnât..... Iâm going to be the one teaching youâ.Â
This time your mouth fell open. âBut.... your schedule.... do you even have time for me?â You knew how busy idols were, and you also knew that Stray Kids were preparing for their next comeback, which meant that Hyunjin would be working harder than ever, not including when he did lessons with you. âAre you okay with this?â
âOf course I amâ, he chuckled. âIâm the one who insisted on itâ. He suddenly went an even darker shade of scarlet. âI mean... I know how great you are at dancing and I wanted to help out.... and I do have some free time so....â He didnât continue, he just stared at you helplessly.Â
You grinned widely at him. âThank you. Thank you so so much!!!â You jumped up and down excitedly. âWhen do we start? Tomorrow?â He just nodded and you jumped around again. âPerfect! Iâll see you tomorrow! Sorry I really need to practise now...â
Hyunjin nodded silently again, still as red as a rose, and walked off, looking shaken SH00KETH. You closed the door silently and slid down it to sit on the floor, giggling insanely.Â
++++++++++
A few more weeks had passed since youâd started your private sessions with Hyunjin. You both had the time of your lives for two hours every day as you learned new dance moves or practised old. He even started showing you a few parts of Stray Kidsâ upcoming title track, eagerly telling you everything he could about the song.Â
But as time went on, you noticed that his steps became heavier, or he lost energy quicker. He started getting puffy eyes, dark shadows protruding on an ever-growing sunken face. He seemed to nod off in the seconds of silence between you, and he became snippy and impatient, scolding you more and more often for putting a foot wrong, or not being perfectly on the tempo.
One day, he seemed to have reached his limit.Â
As you went through your most recently learned choreography, you tripped over your own feet and crashed to the ground with a yelp. As you sat up, making sure you hadnât hurt yourself, Hyunjin strode over to you.Â
âWhat the Hell was that?â, he demanded, grabbing your arm and hoisting you up. âThat looked pathetic. Learn to keep your balance before starting the danceâ.Â
You couldnât help it. You felt your words swell in you uncontrollably, and you blurted: âI just fell over! Donât get so angry for something so dumb!âÂ
You immediately regretted saying anything. Hyunjinâs eyes lit up in anger, and he shook you harshly, still clinging painfully onto your arm. âIâm trying to help youâ, he growled. âIâm taking precious time out of my day just for you! And for what? To have you fall over your own feet and take it out on me!!!âÂ
You took a step back as he raised his voice dangerously. âThis isnât the Hyunjin I met during that first class over two months ago!â, you yelled angrily. âThat Hyunjin wouldâve asked if I was okay, and he wouldâve given actual advice instead of wasting his breath on scolding me!â You knew you shouldnât be shouting at him. He was your senior, and you knew deep down he was just frustrated and tired. But youâd had enough of his awful comments whenever you messed up even a little bit. You also had a limit.
Hyunjin shoved you away violently. âIf you miss being in those classes so much, stop wasting my time and go back to practising with the other pathetic trainees!â He hit a nerve. He called you pathetic. Heâd told you once that he thought you were different from the other trainees, special. Now he was taking those words back.Â
You fought back tears as you straightened up. âFineâ, you said calmly. âAnd you can go back to preparing for your comeback. Thatâs more important anywayâ.Â
He seemed to wake up from a dream. His mouth opened, but no sound came out. All he could do was mouth âwaitâ as you turned on your heel and walked out the door into the hallway.
You found some washrooms and splashed water on your face, grateful for the freezing cold feeling that seeped through your skin. In the silence of the room, you could get your thoughts in order.Â
He hadnât meant it, you knew that. You also knew that heâd seemed to regret saying those things when you left. You felt tired, weighed down. All you wanted to do was sleep. So imagine how he must feel, came a voice in your head. You felt guilt run through you. You had no place to judge him for feeling frustrated. He was exhausting himself at your expense, and you couldnât even hold your tongue when he lost his temper.Â
You made your mind up quickly. You ran back to the practise room, praying that he was still there. I have to apologise...Â
As you ran into the room, you saw Hyunjin in the corner of the room, curled up and lying on his side. As you approached him slowly, you noticed that his eyes were closed and his breaths were long and deep. Heâs asleep. You approached him even more and saw with a start that there were tear marks running down his cheeks. Your heart wrenched as you realised just how tired he must be. He needs to rest more. You checked your watch; another hour-and-a-half until your session was technically over. You grabbed your jumper from your bag and draped it carefully over Hyunjinâs huddled body, watching as he stirred only slightly, then sighed and settled down again.Â
For over an hour, you sat next to him, waiting for him to wake up naturally, but he never did. As the scheduled end of your lesson approached, you decided to wake him up, knowing how awful heâd feel if he missed whatever he had next.
You touched his shoulder lightly, calling his name as gently as you could. âHyunjin, you need to get up...âÂ
He slowly sat up, looking groggy, and stared at you through half-open eyes. âWhat are you doing hereâ, he asked in a low, raspy voice.Â
âIâm waking you up to tell you that our session is nearly overâ, you said simply. âI didnât want to wake you up before, you needed the napâ.Â
He seemed more awake now, and he kept staring at you as he asked: âWhat I meant was, why are you still willing to be in the same room as me?âÂ
You swallowed, your heart in your throat. âBecause I know that I canât possibly understand how tired you must feelâ, you said, your voice wavering. âAnd that itâs difficult to be patient with someone when youâre constantly having to deal with them. Iâm sorry I shouted at you, it was wrongâ.Â
He shook his head slowly. âI shouldnât have yelled at you either. I donât have a right to be that awful to a trainee, no matter how annoying they getâ. You chuckled slightly and he smiled too. âDo you forgive me?â
âDo you forgive me?â, you countered carefully.
âYesâ.Â
âThen the feelingâs mutualâ, you said, relieved.
You helped Hyunjin to stand, and he groaned. âIâm gonna have to live through another two hours of rapping with Chan Hyung breathing down my neckâ. You thought he was joking, but quickly realised this wasnât a good thing.Â
You coughed. âHey. Maybe while youâre preparing for the comeback, I just stick with the other trainees, and youâll have more time for your own practiseâ.Â
He raised his eyebrows incredulously at you. âBut.... what about your own practise?âÂ
âYour health is way more important than these lessonsâ, you insisted. âYouâre turning into a zombie with such a packed schedule. No offenceâ, you added quickly as he gave you a frown. âJust... concentrate on your own problems for now. We can start the sessions up again after youâve finished promotionsâ.
Hyunjin thought for a moment, then finally agreed. You both gathered your things and said tentative goodbyes, Hyunjin sprinting away to not be late for his next practise session.
For the next month-and-a-half, you participated in the common training sessions with the other trainees. It was growing pain having to deal with snide comments from Yujin and your other comrads, who had started lashing out even more for the private dance sessions youâd been getting. But you endured it, checking Stray Kidsâs schedule everyday, and smiling to yourself as you saw how well their promotions were going.
As Stray Kidsâ promotions came to an end, you began wondering when Hyunjin would come to announce the start of your private sessions again. A few days passed as you waited impatiently, not wanting to go to him and bother him, but feeling an inkling fear that heâd stopped wanting to teach you.
Then, week after promotions had ended, you heard a gentle knock on your door. You leapt up and practically flew to your door, flinging it open to see him standing there. âHeyâ, you breathed, pure joy rushing through your veins.
He smiled warmly back at you. âHeyâ. Neither of you said anything for a few seconds, just staring at each other in happiness. Then Hyunjin cleared his throat. âUhh... I came to tell you that our regular sessions are gonna start up again, starting tomorrowâ.
You beamed at him. âI canât waitâ, you told him sincerely.
He nodded and looked at the floor, suddenly seeming very interested in his shoes. âThereâs something else I wanted to say...â You waited patiently for him to speak again. âDuring promotions, I realised how much of a jerk I had been to youâ.
You tried to cut in. âItâs not your fault! You were exhausted. Anyone would get a little grouchy from being so busyâ. But he shook his head, still focusing on the floor.
âIt still wasnât an excuse to be so mean. I hope you know that I didnât mean to hurt youâ.
âI knowâ, you whispered.
âIâd never want to hurt you on purposeâ. Hyunjin shuffled his feet uncomfortably. âI also realised how much I missed seeing you after so longâ. You waited with baited breath as he continued. âI really like seeing you.... I mean I donât like not seeing you... or--â He sighed in frustration.
âHyunjinâ, you said gently. And as he looked up, with a great leap from your heart, you stepped forward and kissed him.
âWhy are you listening to them?â your best friend, Isa, said as she continued to memorize the choreography. Her eyes followed the instructor on the screen.
âBecause theyâre right. Iâm too young for him. They say age is just a number, but honestly do they really mean it?â you stated. You ran your fingers through your hair.
âI donât have time to go all philosophical, Y/n. You donât have time for this either. We need to start learning this choreo or else the instructor is going to give us shit for it. Iâm sure Felix loves you too.â
âYouâre so inconsiderate,â you pouted at your friendâs choice of words. She was right, you didnât have time for crap like this. You knew she meant well, but you canât help thinking about what the other trainees said earlier.Â
âYour face,â Jisung commented.
âWhatâs with my face?â you looked at him weirdly.
âIt looks so distressed,â he pointed out, âDid Felix finally piss you off or something?â
You sighed and explained to him exactly what happened.Â
âAnd your point isâŠâ the older boy squinted at you.
âWhat if Iâm not good enough for him? What if my age hinders my potential?â you spilled. This shouldnât be getting to me. Iâm usually not like this.
âLook, you canât let little things like this get to you. When you make your debut and perform in front of other people, youâre gonna get so much criticism. But at the same time youâll get many supportive comments. Just like you dating Felix. The other trainee may disprove of it. But we, and all your friends, support it. Because we know the real you,â he explained as he patted your back soothingly.
âThanks Jisung,â you gave him a quick hug.
âHey donât you have a choreo to learn?â
âYou right.â
1 am.
You yawned as you packed your bags, getting ready to leave your practice room. The talk with Jisung earlier helped you tremendously, and you were finally able to focus on the new choreography. Just as you were about to grab your bags and leave, you heard the door open.
âHey, I finished practice early, and I wanted to check on you,â Felix said sheepishly.
You smiled and walked towards him. He dyed his hair black again. I was just starting to get used to his blonde hair. He immediately pulled you into his embrace.
âI missed you,â you mumbled onto his shoulder. He rubbed soothing circles onto your back.Â
âI missed you too. It feels like I havenât seen you in months,â he looked at you, âDid you lose weight?â he squished your cheeks together.
âI stress eat okay?â you fiddled with the ends of your sweater.Â
âDonât worry. Jisung told me already,â Felix said as he plopped onto the couch. He patted the seat next to him, motioning for you to sit down. He placed an arm around your shoulder.
âBefore you start lecturing me, I was already lectured by Isa and Jisung. I know I was being dumb,â you defended yourself.
Felix chuckled, âYou know I donât care about your age right? Itâs your personality and the way you handle things. Thatâs what I like about you,â he said as he leaned his head on top of yours.
âBy the way, have you seen our new performance?â
âYea, Jisung killed it.â
âYOUâRE SUPPOSED TO BE LOOKING AT ME, NOT OTHER MEN!â
âYou big baby,â you chuckled and ruffled his hair.
