Saksakan ng Gwapo selfie

Taking a stab at the apple boxes in our photography studio at the Southwestern University PHINMA (SWU) in Cebú City; for a backdrop for a photo-shoot to create Memento Mori portraits for my Grade 11 students’ final assignment. All the swords and blades are from my personal collection that I had amassed during my years of travel in my youth.

As for my final assignment we are having a Memento Mori portrait, in which my students dress up and bring props to create an image that would remind them of their mortality. During the shoots, I would art direct and style some of the students to improve their concept for the portrait. After the photo shoot, the students are to render their images into black and white pencil illustrations.

Postscript I:

“Memento Mori” (translation: “Remember, You are Mortal!!!”) is a Latin phrase that Roman senate would shout at the Emperor / Augustus, to remind them that despite their accolades and power they were not gods and that they were human and mortal.

In the picture are my Yakan barong (leaf-shaped short sword), my T’Boli budyák / sulit / soit (spear), my Ifugao ceremonial gaman (headhunter’s axe), my Bontoc pin-nang / pinangas (headhunter’s axe), my Ifugao hinālung (multi-purpose short sword / spearhead), and in my hand is my Manobo sangi (curved dagger). In the background is my T’Boli t’nalak cloth with our resident baka (Bos primigenius) skull. Obviously you can see the back of my pet skull, Francesca.
