Squirrel
It was beautiful. It was a moment that gathered together and connected otherwise unknown people.
It started with a confused curiosity as this man stood and ran out of the coffee shop I was drawing in, and straight into the busy Toronto street. Curiosity turned to concern as the light turned green, but the traffic stood still as the man bent down and with the most care and love that I have ever seen from the second floor of a coffee shop, scooped up a squirrel I hadn’t seen, who stayed limp in his hands as he carefully ran to the sidewalk to place it out of the way of trampling feet.
People gathered, and I was struck with this feeling as they formed a circle and in some way it felt like a funeral. People were taking time to acknowledge this small passing soul. It was beautiful, watching it all happen.
The man returned to the coffee shop, talking on the phone. He would look out and check on the squirrel, until it was gone. Neither of us saw it go, and the man didn't wash his hands. He didn't see anything wrong about picking up a city squirrel, and his concern for the creature trumped such an idle worry. Beautiful.
