Zelda did her best to sleep through the grief and guilt eating at her heart. Exhaustion would only be hindrance in reclaiming her kingdom, but there was little she could do while imprisoned in her own castle. Her mind willed herself to trust in Link and Midna.
Eventually, her body found fitful rest, though the pall of twilight followed her into her dreams. Faceless masks lurked in the shadows, eager to snatch her into their waiting claws.
A long, mournful howl pulled her out of the grasp of darkness. In her half-waking dream, Zelda chased after the sound. Her bare feet ran through forest grass, branches catching at her skin and clothing. Cuts and bruises stung without the clarity of reality, and she ran with wild abandon, laughter tearing out of her throat.
The four-legged silhouette in front of her continued to howl, now a playful cry rather than a mourning litany. Zelda laughed herself hoarse and ran til her legs and lungs burned with a fire that eclipsed the pain in her heart.
Both she and the beast slowed to a stop. The eyes of her wolf savior looked back at her. Light flashed, and a human hand reached for her, but shadows obscured his face.
Zelda struggled to grasp his hand, fighting the dream-force that would let her run but not walk. They parted—him into light and her into peaceful darkness.
Zelda fell into a deeper slumber, a smile on her face, dreaming of the day they would finally meet face to face.
