A simple guy happy to get on with his life, it might be a surprise that Rol even considered becoming a gym leader. He and his wife Susanna already run a construction company, so it was a surprise when he took the job in his local Pokémon Gym. That being said, once you meet his sons, it becomes very clear he took the position to impress them.
As a gym leader, Rol specialises in the Ground-type, having already trained many of them that aid him in construction work. His Excadrill often gets to work excavating out for them to start the foundations, while his Mamoswine uses it brute strength to move heavy materials and machinery around his construction site, while his Debraeon carries girders and other materials into position.
Meanwhile, with help from Rol's chemistry knowledge, his Gastrodon can uses it water and ground abilities to create a concrete that becomes extremely sturdy when set. His Torterra uses it mastery of roots to carefully carry Rol and his crew up and down the construction sites, being careful to not accidentally Gigantmax while working. As for Rol's Quantunellby... well, she couldn't be bothered about this whole construction lark, and prefers to go exploring other universes. Don't worry though, she's not ditching Rol. She enjoys battling in gym battles... and he makes some good snacks too good to bail on.
Now while all of the gym leaders are to be in attendance of the Pokémon World Tournament in Akkadios, surprisingly, Rol has elected to enter the Specialist Bracket. Maybe he's still trying to impress his kids, maybe his fellow Gym Leader Holt dared him, hell, maybe he's just trying to drum up some business for his wife's construction work. Point is, after so many young trainers challenging him, this time, he's challenging himself.
