please god can publishers stop promoting books with ads that talk about the ways that the book is ādiverseā but donāt tell us anything whatsoever about the actual plot
Iām happy thereās representation in it but unless the book is explicitly about a personās identity as queer/poc/ND/disabled/etc then representation is not enough to advertise with. hell even if the book IS about those things you still need to tell me what the fuck the story is about becauseā¦is this something I actually want to read??? does the premise intrigue me?????
maybe āthereās representation in itā is good enough for people who are desperate for anything (I was like that as a teen) but if Iām going to spend my limited time engaging with your book I want to know if the story sounds interesting
Iām gonna be honest and I obviously donāt have access to actual data but I feel like ad campaigns like this justā¦.for everyone they interest, they turn away at least one other person who wasnāt grabbed by it. I feel like it hurts authors to have their work reduced to āthereās a gay in itā because itās just tokenization with a different hat on.
Personally if your ads donāt tell me what the story is about and only try to appeal to one part of my identity I am going to ignore it out of spite.
Like itās literally no different from āhey youāre a woman right? thereās a woman in this book you should read itā or āhereās a book with a Latine person in it donāt worry what the story isā like it is honestly offensive to me that this is how youāre advertising the story. And I feel bad for the authors too!!!! Like oh my god, as a writer myself, it is offensive that youād take what could be a complex and well thought out story and just reduce it to āgay! POC!ā
I feel like companies (and/or writers) that advertise like this are justā¦showing that they either 1) donāt believe that the story can stand on its own, so they have to resort to cheap tactics, or 2) they donāt respect the audience the book represents, so they assume weāll accept anything they throw at us just because itās ādiverseā regardless of how good the story is and regardless of whether the representation is, you know, good.
Like it ultimately feels like even if the story isnāt strictly about the identity/-ies being represented, they turn it into āa gay storyā or āa POC storyā etc etc by advertising the diversity without also advertising the actual fucking plot. I find it offensive and disrespectful to the readers and the authors (assuming the author isnāt also doing that).

Mara is kidnapped by the horrible Nelgareth who explains his plans to put her on the throne as the rightful heir because of her magic. He really is ultimately an evil, despicable character though.
When plans are made and steps are taken, this book turns into a whirlwind of surprises and sometimes, heartfelt moments. Battling magic and evil, not to mention a budding romance, makes this book a good read.
