Yes’s Tormato (1978): A Disorganized Review
PROG GIRL SUMMER: PART 9/25
right off the hop this is some jolly stuff on “Future Times / Rejoice”. feels pretty different from what we’ve been hearing the last couple albums though, but it’s interesting
all i can taste right now in my mouth is onions. i ate a very oniony burger 5 minutes ago. this album is going to make me think of onions i fear
i like whatever they’re doing with the guitar here……pretty epic……and the nice melody and bass too is good stuff……also i just googled the lyrics for once in my life and i really like them. i kinda hope my prose sounds something like this
“Don’t Kill The Whale” is Funky. feels very yes melodically. i do not think i have very much context for this song in terms of what the lyrics mean but man jon sure can write some words. outro feels kinda angine de poitrine. update never mind i gave it a goog and this song is literally just about not killing whales
“Madrigal” with a harpsichordy happening here. interesting choice for prog but then again this is yes so i shouldn’t be surprised. i do not like the sound of harpsichord particularly much (sorry) so this is not my favourite track but it has cool words
“Release, Release” feels ever so slightly punk to me. like it’s not because it’s a different genre but also the rhythm and pace and vocals and intensity feel kind of punk adjacent? idk? does any body get what i mean. anyway i wasn’t expecting yes to write something political but i kinda jive with it
so far the album feels a little mid to me at times though, i guess the instrumentation just isn’t my favourite even though there’s some strong melodies and lyrics. it’s by far not bad at all though do not get me wrong. i like that this album is very full of stories
“Arriving UFO” sounds exactly like what the title promises. this is so angine de poitrine too. i like this one it’s so weird. reminds me of the Earthbound soundtrack very much. like the scene right in the beginning where ness is walking around in the town at night when the ufo comes down. this song is that to me
“Circus of Heaven” is so amusing and captivating even right from the get go. i like!!! chris also cooking on the bass here. weird little song but very amusing. i like the message of it and i like that jon put his son in the song
oh boy oh boy “Onward” just came on and i Jive with this. this makes me think of BOTW shrine music. does anybody else see the vision here. i LOVE this one, this is definitely my favourite off the album
heh i think my friend fell asleep while we were listening. i tried to tell her my etsy package shipped out. she is sawing logs
this whole album feels so fantastical, it’s like a story
“On the Silent Wings of Freedom” legit they are just doing whatever in this song. random closer but fitting at the same time
3. Fragile-Going for the One tie
7. Tales from Topographic Oceans
FAVOURITE SONGS: “Release, Release”, “Arriving UFO”, “Onward”
PERSONAL RATING: 7.8/10 i liked the story and lyrics but the music didn’t always hit a hundred percent, however the stuff that did, DID if ya get what i mean. it wasn’t my favourite one but i liked it well enough, i would listen again!
man these reviews just keep on getting longer and longer
