The call came at 11am, Theo was in the headteacherâs office.
âIt wasnât mine!â he protested when his mother arrived.
âImmediate suspension while we investigate,â the headteacher responded.
âI want to see it!â Amber insisted.
The headteacher held up a plastic bag with two ready made spliffs inside; âWe can call the police if you have any doubt, Mrs Williams.â
âPlease donât,â Amber replied, âwhat will you do with it?â
âDispose of it,â the headteacher said, âas to Theodoreâs assertion that he was looking after it for a friend, perhaps a search of his room at home will shed light?â
Amber saw Theoâs shoulders sag slightly. Â She took him home and found five other spliffs in his room. Â He refused to talk. Â At a loss, she went downstairs and called his father.
âI should have come to the school!â James exclaimed, âthe children are coming to mine tonight, and âŚâ
âThe school called me. Look in his room at yours, will you? Â See if you find anything. Iâll bring him round this evening,â she ended the call.
There was a knock at the front door. Â Orsonâs parents, Bill and Delores stood on the threshold. Delores hugged Amber hard.
âWe came as soon as Orson told us,â Delores said.
âCould it be a mistake?â asked Bill.
âNo. Â I found more in his room,â sighed Amber.
âChrist, how are you so together?â responded Bill.
âWhat will you do?â Delores enquired.
âWell, heâs grounded âŚâ
âNo, I mean with it. You donât want it in your house do you? Â We could get rid of it for you. Â Flush it down our loo.â
âI couldnât possibly ask you to do that,â responded Amber.
Later, Amberâs partner Sean rang; she told him everything.
âJesus!â Sean exclaimed, âhow come you are so together? Â Do you want me to come round? Look, Amb, you donât want drugs in your house. Â Let me come and take them. Â I can chuck them into the Taff on my way home.â
âItâs OK Sean, Iâve got to go to Jamesâ now.â
At Jamesâ house, Theoâs brother and sister made themselves scarce. Â Amber sat next to Theo in the kitchen. Â James took a seat at the table facing them, rubbing his chin; âWell, this is very serious indeed. Â Youâll never make the team now.â
Theo left the room abruptly, tears in his eyes.
âLeave him,â Amber advised as James stood up.
Keys rattled in the front door and in came Elvira, Jamesâ girlfriend, dressed for the gym, wielding a tupperware box.
âI came as soon as I heard!  I brought homemade cookies.  Oh.  My.  God. Amber.  How are you so together?  Iâd be in pieces!â  She put the cookies on the table, âso you found some in his room as well? You donât want it in your house.  Iâve got a waste disposal unit at mine, I can âŚâ her voice trailed off as she looked at the expression on Amberâs face, âwell, Iâd best leave you two to discuss,â she planted a kiss on Jamesâ head before leaving, âsee you later, gorgeous.â
James and Amber stared at the tupperware container on the table.
James spoke; âShe had a point, Amb.  What have you done with the ah ⌠weed?  I uh think it would be best if I took it.  I have a wood burner âŚâ
âJames, itâs summer!â
âQuite. Â Well,â he stood, âIâm going to talk to my boy alone.â
Amber paused. Â From upstairs she could hear; âYouâll never make the team now! Â Youâll fail your exams! Â Youâve shamed us! Â Youâll be expelled!â
She walked out the backdoor and down the path.  Wedging herself between the shed and the high wall at the bottom of the garden, she took one of the spliffs from her pocket and turned it over in her hands.  It wasnât the years that had tired her, it was the constant activity; the wiping of each snotty nose, the laundering of school uniforms, Jamesâ infidelities, the driving of each child to and from and from and to in all that traffic ⌠The reward was Theoâs transgression and this â she raised the spliff to her lips and lit it.  She closed her eyes and blocked out the distant shouts of James and Theo, instead she focussed on the smoke in her nose and mouth, the soft summer evening sun and the birdsong.
