“Sun and Mist,” Leon Dabo, 1909, courtesy of the Montclair Museum. French-AMERICAN Artist Dabo, who was born on this day in 1865, was one of America’s leading Tonalist painters. Many scholars consider Tonalism as the first truly American art form. It deemphasized fidelity to an accurate representation in favor of summoning up a mood or feeling. In this sense, it was a precursor to Abstract Expressionism and it is known that Jackson Pollock, for example, was a fan. Dabo studied with Whistler, among others, and his work is in nearly every major museum world-wide. He is an important component of our personal collection, and his florals are sublime. @stillwellhousefineartantiques @mammontclair #artoftheday #leondabo #americanartists #tonalism #tonalist #paintingoftheday #postimpressionism https://www.instagram.com/p/CCbZKQSg1LT/?igshid=10z9rdi749yoa
