“More popular than Jesus.” Hearing this album, it’s not hard to understand why. Revolver is one helluva album, arguably The Beatles’ best, and genesis of ‘art rock’. Released in 1966 at the height of their fame – though after Lennon’s remarks on religion it prompted the God-fearing folk of America (that bastion of democracy and free speech) to burn their records. It was the height of swinging London too when British pop music, and culture in general, ruled the world. Without Revolver, no progressive rock, it turned The Beatles from top of the pops hit makers into artists experimenting with sound. . I think Sgt Pepper has dated more than this album, not that this is a bad thing, it’s such an iconic zeitgeist-forming album, how could it not? But it sounds so very late 60s psychedelic pop. Revolver on the other hand sounds fresh, even raw in places: Tomorrow Never Knows could have been released today. (I exclude Yellow Submarine from this comment, I love the song, but Ringo’s wonderfully woozy whimsy carbon dates it like a stick of rock.) . As well as featuring Harrison’s first recorded exploration of Indian music, Love You To, utilising the sitar and tabla from Hindustani classical music, the LP also gifts us the sublime sonic nightmare that is Tomorrow Never Knows, the first song recorded in the album sessions. Lennon’s take on the Tibetan Book Of Dead, his vocals distorted with overdubbed tape loops and Ringo’s majestic cascading drums. . And let’s not forget, this album has Eleanor Rigby on it. Eleanor fucking Rigby! It’s one of the most stunning examples of popular songwriting ever. Even if this was the only song Paul McCartney had ever written, we’d still be talking about it. .
