When I was a kid, more than Grimm, Disney, or what have you, I was in love with Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales. I remember the first time I read Thumbelina, I was in love with the story right up until the end when she chose the prince over the swallow. She didn’t even do it because she loved him. It was because the prince wasn’t as horrible as her previous suitors (he was still an ass, mind) and because the swallow was good ol’ Hans’ self-insert and we all know Hans could never give his projection characters happy endings.
Long story short, this resulted in me making up an entire fix-it fic which over the years developed into a full on retelling adaptation. I’ve recently come back to this old project and tuned up the character designs.
So here’s Tommelise (Thumbelina with the original Danish name). The Flower herself. Styled after tulips and 1800s Danish women’s fashion.
More character designs likely to come in the following weeks. I’ve always liked the idea of it being an animated mini series. My little pet passion project.
It's not exactly summer weather outside right now, yet here I am, painting a Thumbelina-inspired piece out of the blue~
