With respect to Angband, I'm not actually a big fan of ASCII roguelikes. I prefer my roguelikes' game-state to be sight readable, and the high mechanical density of classic roguelikes pairs poorly with the low information density of ASCII graphics in this respect. I grant that hidden information has its place, but I've very rarely encountered an ASCII roguelike which navigates that tension between high-information-density mechanics and low-information-density visuals in a way that feels considered – or even interestingly ill-considered, for that matter!
As for Tales of Maj'Eyal, it just doesn't grab me.
