A pretty theorbo prettily played...in the middle, the theorbo drops back and plays only what I, in modern lingo, would call a ‘bass line’. I’m no expert, but my understanding is that is actually one of the main function of the theorbo in early music - to play that ‘basso continuo’ for other instruments to play over. (I have a feeling a person who actually knows something about this may add a helpful comment, for which I’d be grateful).
Joss Turnbull - Live at Chamber Remix, Cologne, Germany (2024)
NOT just drumming with some background electronics. Yes, Joss is an excellent percussionist but he also know the use his instrument as a sound source and manipulates these sound like a master with his fx-pedals.
The 2 long tracks start of with choppy noodling using excerpts from Votum's "Überdehnung" performance, slowly adding some drony drum elements and building it all up into complex electroacoustic whirlwind. At times it becomes beautifully gritty and noisy, no wonder knowing Joss lately seem to explore the themes of struggling, uncertainty and tension.
Highly recommended for the adventurous listener.
