Prompt #2: Bargain
Aboard The Wavecutter
Nothing was ever simple.
It was a lesson that always came to back to him when he least wanted it. Shigeyori found himself gritting his teeth, angry that it had been taught to him yet again, like a painful slap to the hand. Just a trip into the Bay of Yanxia was all that was asked, delivering Kiratai of the Jhungid tribe and his kin to the northeastern corner of the Steppe; it sounded like an offer too good to be true. Considering the debt that was owed the warlord in his captain’s stead, Shigeyori readily agreed.
Tolui is occasionally taken for being a bit of a bumbling idiot, considering how bubbly he tends to be at the apparent wrong times and how easy it is to push him around. Not to mention, he gets some flack for the way he speaks (being of the Qalli tribe, he confuses some people when he ends up speaking in a sing-song type voice or just singing his sentences mid conversation in a way that his tribe back home usually did), as well as not being fully fluent in Eorzean.
Even so, he does have a quite sharp mind, able to keep track of several things at the same time, and is good at learning. This has led him into getting quite good at leatherworking when a craftswoman (Rivienne) noticed how good his eye for detail was and took him in as an apprentice. He's able to manage several projects at the same time, all while studying several different new techniques for his craft. He even decided to give up learning to fight in lieu of crafting, only keeping a sword on him in case of agressive wildlife (and even then, it's hard for anything out there to sneak up on him).
He's agressively optimistic and may be a bit overbearing at times, but his positivity is usually welcomed. It would take a hell of a lot to crush his spirit, and he's just enthusiastic about everything there is to see in Eorzea. He is much more aware of what's going on than he lets on, though isn't intentionally hiding that he knows what's up.
On May 5th, 1260, Kublai declared himself Great Khan of the Mongol Empire. A grandson of Chinggis Khan through his son Tolui, Kublai's elder Mongke had succeeded the line of Ogedai as Great Khan in 1250. During Mongke's reign, Kublai was sent to China to campaign against the Song Dynasty, and it was there that he learned of Mongke's death in 1259. Not only that, but their younger brother Ariq Boke had already declared himself the next Great Khan.
When Kublai declared himself Khan on 5 May 1260, (while still in China!) he began a four year civil war between him and Ariq for the Khanate. By the time it was over Kublai was Great Khan, but he now ruled over an empire irrevocably broken into four independent Khanates. In 1271 Kublai established the Yuan Dynasty, cementing the focus of his heirs on being masters of China, a conquest completed in 1279.
Here’s my Xaela I’m literally never going to do anything with lol Tolui would be a PLD, but WAR is more her aesthetic.

Genghis Khan and his children according to Jack Weatherford
Genghis Khan: I am entrusting this vital part of my empire to my daughters/grand-daughters because I know they are capable to administrate it and I can rely on them while I am conquering the rest of the world... You see the women in my family are RELIABLE not like some OTHER persons!
Jochi, Chagadai, Ogedei, and Tolui: Can you be something else than passive agressive for two minutes please?
remembrance
Masaki looks up at the vast blue, unclouded sky, at the yurts and tents dotting the landscape, the Xaela Au Ra milling about as if nothing had changed in the past four years he’d been away. He stares and stares as if he doesn’t yet believe his own eyes.
He has come back home after so long.
Tears well up in his eyes unbidden. Masaki wipes his traitorous eyes and hides his strange, stubborn tears behind his hand.
It takes some time for him to recollect himself and forge onward to the first site he sees. His fingers reach up to fix a mask that no longer exists and stops, awkwardly letting his hand fall to the side. He adjusts the strap of the pack he’s brought with him on his shoulder, takes a deep breath, and takes step after careful step towards the marketplace and freezes at the sight of a Qestiri guarding the entrance.
Maybe if he looks unassuming, they’ll let him pass without a question. He looks down at his garb.
...
Yeah, they’re not gonna let him in. He looks like a foreigner in these clothes.
How is he going to get past the guard?
An idea occurs to him.
Masaki bolts for it, ignoring the confused shouts and yells as he speeds past the guard and straight into some poor patron at the markets. He slams into them so hard that the force of it sends them both toppling into the ground.

Juvaini on the Fall of Nishapur
Continuing our series on primary sources, in this video we look at the thirteenth century Persian historian Juvaini's description of the siege of Nishapur and ensuing massacre -also connecting to our video on Mongol Massacres in the Khwarezmain Empire. Along the way, you get to see a bit on Mongol siege tactics, as well as Juvaini's rather flowery prose.
