Slow Down Sunday * Here is a magazine clipping from 1900 showing a photo of Cresceus, a famous trotter owned by George H. Ketcham in Toledo, OH. * Cresceus was one of the greatest trotters of all time. * Most Toledoans have NEVER heard of Cresceus or his millionaire owner, George Ketcham, but they left their mark on Toledo. * In Toledo today, there's a Cresceus Road on the east side, and a seasonal Cresceus Belgian Ale brewed at Maumee Bay Brewery. McGregor Lane once marked the Ketcham Farm driveway; it is named for Cresceaus' father. * Manbrino and Patchen roads are supposedly named for Ketcham horses; Fink and Wilkes streets, for two jockeys, in a development once called Ketcham's Cresceus Heights. * The stallion with the 21-foot stride was born in 1894 on Ketcham Farm along Alexis Road, in a village called Trilby. * He was dubbed "Crescens," for a Greek charioteer. He looked so unpromising that Mr. Ketcham, a gentleman horsebreeder, almost had him shot. * By 1901, when he was 7-years-old, a careless typesetter had changed his name to "Cresceus." He set the world's record for racing stallions: 2.02.25 over a mile course, and held 16 more world records in wagon and sulky racing over half-mile and mile distances, on straight and round tracks, pulling sulkies and wagons, on rough ground, "snow paths," and frozen rivers, running up to eight races per day. * The horse was a national hero at the turn of the century. * Want MORE Time Travel in Toledo, Ohio? Brown was the president of the Toledo Library Board and a resident of Toledo more than forty years. He had extensive business associations and interests around the area during his time. * He was a westerner by birth and training, and saw and knew the typical wild and woolly West in its prime. He was also an honored veteran of the Civil War. * Calvin was of Scotch-Irish stock, born to James A. and Rachel (Stewart) Brown. His father was a miller and farmer in Pennsylvania, where he was born and married Rachel.
