Thereâs been a lot of talk about unity lately, prompted by Bidenâs inauguration speech. I believe in unity, in the sense that people should come together for civil debate and working together, even when they may not agree about specific policies. I donât think everyone has to have a carbon-copy opinion of one another to function as a nation. . All of that said though, there are certain human rights issues that I donât see as âdebatable.â The value of someoneâs life and equality isnât a policy debate, so donât get twisted. The hate from the far right isnât something that can be compromised with. But the rest of us can unify to get things back on course for real progress and change. Those of us who are particularly progressive (đââď¸) have a lot of work to do now, to convince others of our values and perspectives. (Marginalized groups who are completely exhausted do not have this obligation though. Iâm mostly speaking to white cis people.) We have to work hard to find a respectable way to do this, through logic, teaching compassion, leadership, dedication, perseverance, and encouraging unity. Not the kind that encourages people to shut up and fit inâânow isnât your time, be patientâ (thatâs uniformity) but rather the kind where learning is possible. . Throughout history, things that are radically progressive have eventually become the norm, which makes me confident that Iâm doing the right thing. There always has to be the folks fighting on the furthest end of the liberal tug-of-war rope, and theyâre always going to be seen as âidealistic, unrealistic, over-the-top.â But slowly, they get used to our ideas. The public starts accepting these changes.
