Takeover U.F.O. review

Takeover’s sci-fi event this year known as U.F.O.: The Universe, Fiction and the Obscure started out with a bang on October 4th as the décor of the QFT was changed in collaboration with the lovely Sarah Speers and Stuart Marshal, who guided the design crafted the science fiction décor and with the help of the takeover group, set up the QFT Foyer complete with an interactive spaceship which had an interactive robot by the Design Zoo! The Fun Palace was set up for the first night which included a 3-D printer station by the FAB LAB Belfast, who could print a miniature of your head! While the fun palace took place there was also the screening of the short Sci-Fi film: Flying Saucer Rock’n Roll which was introduced by the screenwriter of the film Mik Duffy.

The rest of the events were followed by screening of Terry Gilliam’s classic film Brazil and then a sci film making workshop for the younger ages with film tutors from Nerve Belfast, the resulting trailer can be seen on Takeover’s vimeo channel. The event itself was booked fully as the young film makers proceeded to enhance their skills by being taught by professionals. The later followed the screening of the anime The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. The next film screened was followed by Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and then The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy.

Eventually the event reached its final showing of 2001: A Space Odyssey which was completely sold out as attendants filled the screen up entirely to watch a cinematic sci-fi masterpiece on Sunday 30th November. It was Introduced by one of Takeover’s members to a packed screen 1, and promptly enjoyed by everyone. In fact all of the screenings had short introductions by a youth panel member. During this time, Takeover has been planning its future film festival screenings behind the scenes for another great programme from 20-22nd February, details for this will be announced very soon.
