Haymitch loves both of his grandchildren deeply, but there's something special about him finally getting to watch a little brother grow up in a world without a reaping.
Toastbaby boy's teacher pulls Katniss aside one day at pickup to let her know that he bit another child. Katniss is pretty concerned because he's never bitten anyone before. She later discovers that the students were playing duck-duck-goose, and her son, having grown up across the lawn from Haymitch, thought that's just what geese do.
i have a post-mockingjay headcanon that katniss eventually teaches herself to play the guitar. i imagine peeta finding one and gifting it to her as a birthday present, or as a gesture to cheer her up on an especially hard week. she loves having something to do with her hands and she has such a natural (biological!!) connection to music that it comes so easy to her. at any given time peeta or haymitch will just find her strumming away on the porch, the couch, or sitting on a hill in the meadow, surrounded by a field of wildflowers and dandelions. it helps her stay grounded, especially on bad days. being able to express herself through music instead of words is comforting.
those little toast babies grow up with music always playing in the house, just as their covey ancestors once did.
The more I think about it (especially post-SOTR) the more I like the idea of the Toastbabies having Covey names.
We already see Katniss fall back in love with music at the end of Mockingjay. She uses her father's (and by extent, the Covey's) music to help her heal.
And we know Haymitch tells her stories about Lenore Dove, Burdock, etc. He tells her the things about her heritage and her ancestors that she never got to learn. Maybe she even gets to meet Clerk Carmine at some point (I know she technically already "knows" him, but she just knows him as the "lone fiddler", she doesn't know everything else).
The great thing is that the fanon names of Willow and Rye can still be used for the ballad parts of their names! Willow is Deep In The Meadow of course or Taylor Swift bc why the fuck not and Rye can be a reference to "them good ole boys were drinking whiskey and rye" in American Pie.
And of course the color parts of the names would be some shade of green and sunset orange.
