This previous post is really about examining the broader message that the fandom’s consensus sends, and how it’s ultimately unhealthy. When people defend Zoro’s words from Water 7 as if they’re the ultimate truth, it creates a dangerous narrative. It overlooks the deeper issues Usopp was dealing with, like the lack of a father figure, which left him without the self-confidence he needed. Instead of acknowledging this, the fandom often criticizes Usopp for letting his “pride” get in the way, when in reality, he was struggling with suppressed emotions and a lack of proper emotional guidance.

The idea that Usopp was wrong and should have just fallen in line is harmful because it reinforces the notion that “might is right” and that questioning authority or seeking explanations is somehow disloyal. This mindset is not only unfair to Usopp’s character but also sends a message that suppressing emotions and blindly following others is the right thing to do. Usopp’s apology after Enies Lobby, then, feels inadequate because it doesn’t address the real issues he was facing or the unhealthy lessons the fandom has taken from this arc.

In short, the fandom’s consensus around Water 7 promotes an unhealthy message that doesn’t give Usopp—or anyone in a similar situation—the grace and understanding they deserve.
