Gosh you can just tell how scared Jack is of the Refuge. He's all grim and quiet in a way that he rarely is.
But he goes back for Crutchy. And you can see the care and concern on his face so clearly.
But after all that, all his facing his fears, Crutchy doesn't want to leave. And he respects Crutchy enough to listen to him, and to accept that he'd rather stay than be carried. He doesn't go "no I know what's best for you. you're being ridiculous and we're carrying you out whether you like it or not." He only goes back for Crutchy. And he leaves empty handed;
