I have been voting for this bird for years. Just saw this week's Last Week Tonight and then this insta post. Nicely done Titipounamu team. Nicely done.
Rifleman / Titipounamu

I have the tab open from my first google picture search of them and I keep it open and I go an look at it all the time."
I was really hoping these guys would make it in, as they're part of a super ancient lineage of songbird that isn't related to the other huge sub-orders that dominate the bird world. There is Tyranni (sub-oscines), and then Passeri, (oscines), who are also known as songbirds. The difference between oscines and sub-oscines comes down to how their syrinx, or voicebox, is formed and how much control they have over it.
Titipounamu sit outside of this dichotomy in the sub-order Acanthisitti, or New Zealand wrens. This family used to contain several more species, but first lost four to the arrival of Maori, and then two more to European introduction. Only two species now remain, the New Zealand Rock Wren and the Rifleman.
The rifleman gained its English name from the way its colors matched the colors used by New Zealand's military for soldiers of the same name. The Maori name name comes from the words Titi, meaning "a mirage or vision of" and pounamu, which is greenstone, referencing their green plumage.

One of the smallest species of bird in New Zealand, these tiny New Zealand wrens are mainly found in high altitude mature forest on the North and South Islands. They eat a variety of small invertebrates, such as beetles, spiders, and moths, often foraging on tree trunks. Pairs build spherical nests in cavities, with males doing a larger share of the construction. Both parents incubate and care for the chicks, often assisted by related or unrelated helper birds. Though they are classified as a species of Least Concern by the IUCN, their population is in decline due to habitat destruction and possibly predation by introduced species, including stoats.
