WIP Wednesday!
I made some progress on a couple WIPs today, so I'm gonna share!
First from my Hobbit fic (in which Thorin really needs a snickers and a nap and is getting exactly none of those):
Bilbo scraped the last servings of porridge into two bowls, one Ori took to Dwalin at the gate so he could eat while it was still warm, the other she set aside hopefully for Thorin. Part of her still believed that if he could just get a decent meal in him, that would improve his mood a little bit. Though she would not hold her breath for their ill-tempered king to make an appearance in camp. She’d only just begun to wash the pot when she was proven wrong. Thorin stomped into camp, and for a brief second all froze, certain he was about to start shouting about how they should be searching for the Arkenstone. Balin didn’t give him a chance. “Thorin, perfect timing, come, sit, your breakfast is still hot. Eat.” He must have been more hungry than he was annoyed, because he actually sat at the brazier and began spooning food into his mouth. Bilbo tried not to watch too closely, but it was the first time she’d seen him eat a real meal in quite a while. It was about damn time. Thorin got halfway through his bowl when the sound of pounding feet echoed up the stone corridors. Ori careened through the doorway calling for Balin, stopping just short of bowling over Dori. “Balin! Oh – Thorin, the elves. The elves are back. They’ve brought the whole army!”
And then a little something from my Summer in Mara fic (yay unnecessary world building! I'm sure it means nothing that Aquila has such little regard for his home culture and certainly won't be a sticking point):
Most of the art was Qūido origin, naturally, Qu was their home world. But here and there, in particularly themed collections and exhibits there was art from others peoples in the galaxy – original pieces very rarely, most often recreations, digital facsimiles, or holograms. There were even some Elit pieces. Aquila could always tell when something was made by his people even if there was no signage to distinguish. It wasn’t a signature look or technique used by Elit artists, but more the subjects they chose to immortalize – objects, treasures, places, technology, conquests. Things, not people. Sure, portraits were still created by Elit artisans, but they were never what Deva sent out to be displayed on foreign worlds. Who cared if an important individual was captured by a master in oils, that did not show off The Progress to other races. And all Elit knew The Progress was the single most important aspect of their culture. Elit art bored Aquila. Technically it was flawless, but it crossed over to being too perfect, soulless, not beautiful. He had the impression that even the creators did not feel much from their own work, they simply made something to their exacting specifications and sent it out into the world. The greatest aspects of any culture was showcased in its art. The greatest achievement one could do was create something beautiful. And Elit art fell short in both regards. Fortunately, the galleries on Qu held very little Elit art. There were many more beautiful things to look at.
