This one is more for the mandolin fans then bluegrass. Â Tiny Moore and Jethro Burns 1979 vinyl record Back To Back. Â Don't write it off, not all the songs sound this much like jazz. Â Once again I've posted the title cut. Â Here are a few liner notes.
JETHRO BURNS is probably the most famous mandolin player in the world. His work with the late Henry (Homer) Haynes as Homer & Jethro reached millions of people through radio, recording, television, and night club appearances. Jethro began playing professionally at age twelve in Knoxville, Tennessee as a radio staff musician. His career progressed steadily as he developed the playing of jazz on the mandolin. Today Jethro spends a good deal of his time teaching and performing locally in the Chicago area. He has toured extensively with singer Steve Goodman. Jethro Burns brings a sophistication to the mandolin unequaled in other more traditional approaches.
TINY MOORE is the most important electric mandolin player in the music business. Performing with Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys in the late 1940's, Tiny almost single handedly developed and defined swing and jazz playing on the electric mandolin. As a child in Port Arthur, Texas he studied classical violin but moved to mandolin in his teens. Tinyâs style on the mandolin has more in common with the great jazz guitar and horn players than with the country mandolinists. He pioneered the use of the solid-body electric five string mandolin with an extended low pitch range. Today Tiny Moore performs regularly with the Merle Haggard band and also owns a music store in Sacramento, California.
