I wanna take this day to send a big, loud THANK YOU out into this little fandom of ours. Of all the characters I’ve lost my mind over through the years, the community around these two is truly the kindest, most supportive group of people. You lot have brought so much joy to my evenings spent laying in bed reading, inspired me, made me laugh, and ultimately challenged me to be a better writer.

I never quite know what to say when I finish a fic that’s really touched me, so I tend to hoard them away on my browser until the words miraculously arrive. They usually don’t and instead I find myself re-reading until the stories are burned into my head. But I want every single one of you to know today that you are appreciated, loved, cherished, and YOUR STORIES have made so many of us happier. (Or deeply affected us with Hurt.)

laughing ‘til our ribs get tough

Vanessa studies Charity over the rim of her pint glass, eyes narrowed in on the way Charity’s smile hangs on her face, suspended in place; the way her laugh sticks hard to the edges of her lips.

The trial is in a few days and Charity seems to have frozen in anticipation. Everyone moves around her, all of them none the wiser. But Vanessa is. She knows the pin-straight pull of Charity’s spine and the picture frame-smile of her mouth and the too-quick flit of her fingers. She knows what they are, how they’re in place to protect; to protect Ryan, Vanessa, Noah.

To protect herself.

A man at the bar says something, leaning in too close and speaking too low. Vanessa‘s stomach barely roils in jealous; not when Charity looks over and catches her eye and winks. Charity's mouth quiets, and her shoulders soften, and Vanessa can’t help the smile that comes and makes her cheeks burn.

Charity turns away and everything shifts like a vault door, cogs and rods and locks clicking into place. She laughs at something the man says - loud and hot and fake - and he buys it, leaning in as Charity leans away.
