anyone got any advice on how to make friends irl with people with tourettes? England has Tourettes Action which organises events and meetups, but this isn't a thing in Ireland it's wack because it's a fairly common disorder but I have yet to meet anyone that I am aware has tics and I feel so isolated
I'm saving up to eventually attend one of the meetups in England but I don't know what to do in the meantime

Movie about a badass assassin with tourettes or something. They noticably tic on screen, but it doesn't take away from their competence. And maybe people don't take them seriously until it's too late.
Or a character with tourettes in high fantasy. A royal in a GOT-type setting.
Or a transmasc/man character who has tourettes, and the fact that tourettes is more common in men than women gives them intense gender euphoria
Just movies where the tourettes is there but it's not A Movie About Tourettes. They got other shit to do and they do it well while having tics.
I'd also fuckin kill for representation of tourettes that deals with the darker side of things. Most rep is sickeningly sweet and positive, and a lot of it is aimed more ag kids. Character who struggles with suicidal thoughts, with making and keeping friends, with being in a relationship. Character in movies that have a heavy sexual element, that has sex. Character that has enemies and friends for reasons completely unrelated to their tics.
Character who's actually a shitty, terrible person and the narrative doesn't shy away from that, whether or not the character has a redemption arc, because people with tourettes are real, flawed people, and some people are just shitty. If you're gonna have good representation of tourettes, you have to treat us like people. Bad people don't inherently make for inaccurate representation.
The edgiest representation of a character with tourettes that I have seen was The Road Within, which is possibly the first time I've ever seen a character with tics be like, a flawed human being. That character was kinda fucked up and also fucked. On screen. Which honestly felt revolutionary to me. And the movie did heavily focus on the tourettes, and the ED and OCD of the other two characters, but there was also a bunch of other shit going on. They stole a car and kidnapped a guy. I have some reservations about some things, but I have to acknowledge that it's kind of crazy that that was all in a movie with a character with tourettes. I'll have to rewatch that movie and see if my thoughts have changed.
Anyway. I think a horror movie about tourettes, or maybe a metaphor for tourettes, would be fun. There's so much that feels horrific about having tics, as a person with tics.
Gimme more, don't treat us with kid gloves. Absolutely consult with/hire people with tourettes, make sure it's done well and doesn't stray into ablism (though ofc idk if you can make disabled rep without someone viewing it as having elements of ablism, even if it's not present—I know a character that's a shitty person would be automatically viewed as ablist rep by many, which, as a recovering shitty person with tourettes, I vehemently disagree with). But there's a difference between making sure it's not ablist and making a character that's a real person, that has real struggles and pain and dark parts of themselves. And well-rounded representation doesn't have to be a terrible person, they can be very kind, but everyone has things they struggle with, mistakes they make, etc.
If you have coprolalia, I love you. I know the world treats people with coprolalia either as a joke, or a danger, or a bad person on a moral level, and people with coprolalia deserve so much better. Y'all are all great, and if people treat you like you're not, eat them they need to fix their hearts or die.
Coprolalia isn't exclusive to tic disorders, and this post isn't solely for those with tic disorders. If you have coprolalia, you're included in this :3
is it weird or controversial that I don't really want to get rid of my tic disorder😔 even if my tics (especially dystonic, I have them literally all the time) can last for hours sometimes, I just don't want to. I don't want to take any medication for them, they're not really disabling, just awkward and embarrassing and sometimes painful. it feels like a good sneeze or violently scratching a mosquito bite when I tic. like this is the way for my body to release all the pent-up energy from stress I'm experiencing, especially when I get complex motor and vocal ones. it also makes me me in a sense, like it's a part of my identity along with being autistic and chronically mentally ill. idk. navigating relationships with my disabilities and accepting them as a part of myself is really confusing and embarrassing for me for some reason, especially when I feel so many complex things about them lmao
i think one of the most annoying things about having a tic disorder is having to suppress the violent tics because you're not in a safe space to do them. Also when people tell you to do it against something soft. Like no, you don't get it they will only be soothed by slamming my fist so hard it brusies into a wall or myself. Pain is part of the tic. And it's really annoying.
Also because the really violent tics are the ones that are less frequent for me people forget that I do them and then it hurts and they're staring at me like I'm possessed.
I don't see people talk about this very often and I think we should talk about it more.

Day 6 Q: What things make your tics better/worse? What helps you manage or cope with them better (could be medication, creative outlets, self-care, etc)?
Day 6 A: Really the only things that make my tics better are CBIT and staying at home because it's less stressful. Other than that, my tics kind of do whatever tf they want. When I was younger, I would write poetry as an outlet for my mental health.
Day 7 Q: What do you think of the tourette's/tic disorder symbols? (Teal ribbon, lightning bolts). What would you change about them or add?
Day 7 A: Lightning bolt, extremely cool, makes sense, A+. Teal ribbon/color scheme? Awful. Horrible. Disgusting-ass color imo. There are so many beautiful blue-green shades and you picked the UGLIEST motherfucker?? I'd way prefer a shade like this:

30 Days of Tourette's Awareness & Acceptance: Days 4 and 5

Day 4 Q: What is something you wish people would know or understand about tics better? What's a way you wish people would support you or treat you in regards to your tics?
Day 4 A: I honestly just wish people would consider why someone is making odd noises or movements. Some people get really angry and demand to know what you're doing, and that makes us (at least I know it does to me) feel scared and in danger. If you aren't sure what's going on, and the person is minding their own business and isn't harming someone else, please just leave them alone. Better yet, please look online for examples of what tics look and sound like. Ofc they can be anything, but often motor tics and at least verbal tics, look and sound a particular way. I wish more people knew that if someone is doing a strange, repetitive behavior, especially if they're not actually calling attention to it, they probably don't want to be doing it, either.
Day 5 Q: What is something you wish the tic disorder community would do better or differently?
Day 5 A: I wish we could stop like. Constantly citing the percentage of people who have coprolalia? Of course, not everyone has coprolalia. And that's not the extent of the disorder, even for people with coprolalia. But if someone brings it up, the most common response is "No, only 10% of people with tourettes have that." Which...kind of gives "No, and don't associate me with that." I've also seen it when people talk about hiring people with tourettes. If someone is discussing employers being worried about hiring someone with tourettes, they often cite this statistic. Which just throws people with coprolalia completely under the bus. It feels like "Well, you shouldn't worry about that because MOST of us don't have coprolalia." Well, what about everyone else who does? They still deserve employment, especially since having a job is literally a requirement to continue living. This instance feels particularly egregious. And there's also the aspect that anyone can develop any tic at any time. So, it's entirely plausible that people without coprolalia will develop it at some point in their life. We can educate without making it sound like a bad thing. If someone asks you if you cuss as a tic, just say no. If someone says "all people with tourettes cuss" that's a more appropriate time to bring it up, but just. Be careful of the phrasing. You can say "About 10% of people with tourettes have coprolalia. It's not all of us, but some people do. So what?" Or something. This is something that's weighed really heavily on my mind. I think most people probably don't think about the implications, but it really gets under my skin.
