Buster Keaton returns to work at MGM as a gag writer and part-time director, at a salary of $100 a week which soon rises to $300.

What an anniversary to come back to! 93 years ago today, Buster Keaton made cinematic history filming the iconic falling house stunt for āSteamboat Bill Jrā released the following year.
It was undoubtedly one of his more dangerous stunts, with very little margin for error.Ā Just 2 inches miscalculation in any direction could have led to serious injury or worseā¦but the little engineer that could, proved that mathematics & meticulous planning is a matter of life or death!
Filmed with a skeleton crew, most on set could not bear to watch, Busterās triumph as he scampers away unscathed is unlikely not just acting ;)

āWork began immediately on the first MGM-produced Keaton comedy, with the working title Snap Shots. It was released as The Cameramanā¦ā
āIn 1953, when a friend of Buster Keaton asked to see it projected, he was told a surprising thing. āThe present print is worn out,ā an executive said. āItās been our training picture. Ever since 1928 weāve made each new comedian study it. From Durante to Abbott and Costello, from Mickey Rooney to Red Skelton and the Marx Brothers.āā

āThree Agesā opens in Los Angeles and Washington D.C. Ā The well-known scene where Buster Keaton falls through three canopies is a literal example of serendipity, or a happy accident. Ā He was meant to reach the ledge & when he didnāt (it wasnāt as high up as it looks, thankfully) he was laid up for several days recovering.
Buster always instructed his crew to keep rolling no matter what & when the rushes were brought to his bedside, it inspired the extended fall through the canopies, the window & down the firemanās pole that we all know & love.
