This kind of highly-personalized drama doesn't really work for me as much-
-given how ideological Riot makes Demacia. Hard to explain it but this is the kind of stuff you can do when you have societies ordered around personal relationships. Think Arthurian mythology or ASOIAF or even Dune where the personal is inextricably tied to the social structures itself. It's not just an underling that is doing something wrong, it's your beloved brother that you now must fight. This allows for personal drama to be elevated to levels impossible if it were just normal people (murder, warfare, treason, politics, etc.).
But Demacia isn't like those places. It's very *un*-personal in a lot of ways. So rather than the emotions elevating the social constructs and vice-versa, what you get is just this annoying coldness from the ideologies butting in to make the personal emotions seem lesser. Also it just makes characters look like hypocrites in ways that are not tied to any emotionality and thus not particularly engaging.
The only way to square-the-circle on this somewhat would be if the ideologies were genuinely interesting and or were emphasized as having genuine value on a non-insignificant level. Then at least you could have a push-pull dynamic between personal love and genuinely admirable duty to a cause. Though it's really hard to do this consistently, and certainly Demacia's lore doesn't do this at all. Demacian duty is portrayed consistently as bad with no redeeming characteristics whatsoever beyond a few banal platitudes like "it's good to have honor" or "being honest is nice".
