I want to make a little note that spirk (the first gay ship ever) was my first queer ship too, and I love them dearly as the biggest otp of all times! I feel like I’ve been preparing for this for the past 12 years 😭 So welcome on board! 🚀

Stranger Things in s5 refers to Star Trek through Robin’s shirt with a phrase “Beam me up, Scottie” which is a popular incorrect quote, referring to the very first series in it’s enormous franchise (nearly 1000 episodes) “Star Trek: The Original Series” aka TOS, the main characters of which are officers Kirk and Spock and their crew. (They are considered often as a triumvirate with Dr.McCoy but as we’re speaking of queerness in culture, we’ll focus on Spirk, the main ship.)

Star Trek was originated as a very humanistically centred thing. Queerness has never been open in the first series, but the subtext turned out to be colossal which basically created fanfiction culture. Although one crucial thing ST did for diversity on TV was showing the very first interracial kiss.

(Also Spock is only half-human and half-Vulcan, which technically makes spirk having an interracial connection too.)

Heart vs Head — with Mike “You’re the Heart” Wheeler and Will The Wise. Interesting, that Will has the same haircut as Spock! And the Heart there is a captain/leader, so called the ladies man (versus allegedly bisexual, aha) — but he’s yellow. Ah yeah, about that: those classical queer coding colours… does it ring a bell?:) 💛💙

Next, my main point is to address “shared looks, brush and touch” of the… anything, but actually the touch is kinda different topic (we’ll get there), — and ambiguity.

And yep, we got here!

What you need to know atp about Vulcans is that they are sensitive, they do not touch others easily, as technically their fingers touch means a kiss. On the 1st picture here 👇 you see the moment when Spock is about to die, he is behind the glass, but he puts his hand on it, so that their hands with Kirk would… uh… farewell in Vulcan 🖖 salute? 🫠What I mean here is that with no glass it is a kiss.

Speaking of t’hy’la, it is the closest type of connection, and with this word Spock addresses Kirk, his friend, but in his language also a lover. Because… their friendship is “unusually close”. Something byler sounding to my ears…

The “kiss” moment is from the 2nd movie of the post-series, a part of one whole arc (ST 2, 3, 4):

So here you can see the connection to the whole story of Vecna and Dr.Brenner, experimenting with superhuman blood, the supremacy conflict and terraforming motif. The shot from above is from ST2: after Spock’s death in ST3 they try to get him back (out of nothingness) and succeed, try to go back to their planet and meanwhile travel in time.

By the way, do you still remember what I’ve told you about Vulcan kisses? 🫠

Let’s go through the topics of this arc relevant to Stranger Things and Conformitygate

Star Trek II:

1. the simulation is a no-win scenario 2. birthdaygate 3. “low spirits due to his age” aka saying goodbye to childhood in Stranger Things 5x08 (which for Mike is also a reference to loosing Will) 4. genetical experiments 5. Kirk has an ex (out of nowhere tbh) for this film, but Spock is crucial and constant in his life 6. Vecna’s spy 7. three dimensions (the Abyss, the UD, Earth) 8. mind-melding!, sharing memories, “remember” 9. self-sacrifice

Star Trek III:

1. coming back from “not being” 2. not presented mind 3. planet that can be destroyed 4. heavy plot about Mike’s mind probably being in Will’s mind or vice versa? 5. memories are fragmented 6. first thing Spock remembers is “Jim” 💛💙 “That’s my friend, Mike.”

Star Trek IV:

1. catastrophe 2. songs are important and you need to set the connection, so the “song” (or I just needed you) could be heard 3. (but for that) you need to travel (back) in time 4. a tank associated with El 5. the planet will be saved 6. Mike’s queerness will be accepted (by him, his close ones, his family and mb even his father)

So, this is it. Our journey has come to an end.

A bunch of last points:

“To boldly go where no man has gone before” — is an iconic line from TOS, their credo, which can be associated regarding Stranger Things with two topics: 1) bravery within the literal mystical unknown, 2) boldness in being yourself, doing what you’re not used to. Not fearing of being yourself no matter what and living freely.

Spirk is also known as “space husbands”. When such a big ship, huge one, the base itself — is behind your back, when you’re built on such a big thing, you have no chance for not being endgame. If you’re paralleled to spirk — you’re guarded! 🪽
