Three Ring Binder a book of dreams
They always leave the book.
I'm an architect and when people come to me with their dreams they often have a book. The book has pictures in it, floor plans they like, a poem. The book can launch a dream.
It’s usually a three ring binder.
But the clients who leave the book with me, well, it's like passing on the dream.
The two men who had a piece of bottomland and wanted to quit their jobs and build a flower nursery. After describing it to me, they left their book. I never heard back.
Another two guys who wanted to start a NASCAR museum at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Then there were the former pilots who planned to convert a WWII hangar at Douglas airport, one of them tethered to an oxygen tank in a motorized wheelchair. They all left me the book.
I was honored to receive their dreams.
Some of us keep scrapbooks. It’s a way to pass on our lives. It may be that we post on Instagram not because we'll ever look at the photos but that they'll be our history. Our obituary even.
But no one ever left me an Instagram of a dream.
The physical smell and touch of a three ring binder can start conversations and kindle a romance. It’s a walled garden of ideas. And when the dream is over I know what will happen.
