I once provided case management for are a tough population. All the families are dealing with crisis, were homeless and had children.
I would literally meet people at their rock bottom. So, I do not get introduced to the best version of themselves. My approach is always to begin with questions which will open up the dialogue and get to the core of what happened.
Lead w/ kindness - It’s hard to ask for help. Most people do not confide in their family or even their friends. They would much rather figure it out themselves. Often they’ve had the door slammed several times and simply were treated poorly. Kindness goes a long way. Smiling, listening and being honest is the first step to beginning the case management/ relationship building process.
Ask the hard questions - Now is the time to be straight forward. Don’t hesitate to ask questions such as how’d you end up homeless, are your kids father/mother involved, can you pass a drug test or what are your long term goals. Getting answers at the start of case management helps to develop a workable case plan.
Obtain documents - Documents are vital. It is my experience that getting the paper work done leaves more time for accomplishments. It also helps with taking notes while assisting families. In addition, most funding sources require certain documentation. Should a family be hesitant, I suggest being honest and letting that family know “no funding is given without documentation”.
