The Haunting of Hill House is a found family story about a found family that, crucially, fucking suckssss
I fell off my Blue Castle Book Club readings after week one, and without even posting about it, but I've been rereading The Haunting of Hill House and I feel like you could make a really interesting study of the parallels between Valancy Stirling and Eleanor Vance. They're both quiet and put-upon, they both come from pretty loveless families, they're both single and romantically inexperienced at an age where people look at women oddly for that, and they both have very strong internal fantasy lives.
Not having read most of The Blue Castle and having only an approximate idea of its course, I am talking a little bit out of order here, but there's even a similar premise to both their character arcs: both The Blue Castle and The Haunting of Hill House follow what happens when these mousy, fairytale-minded women step out of their drab passivity and begin making actual steps, crazy though they might seem, towards the kind of life they'd actually like to live. (Even with my vague knowledge, though, I am given to understand it turns out very differently for Valancy than it did for Eleanor.)
