to the anon with the obviosly fake fantasy scenario that never happened 🙄🙄🙄 yeah I'm not gonna post that...

so the thing that stuck for me in hamlet is how the one true love - the only good relationship - in the entire play is between hamlet and horatio. because we see the truth from every relation in this little universe in its final moments - how selfish was the so-called love hamlet's father had for him, coming back as a ghost to give his son an impossible task, one who led him to madness; his mother who until her final moments was so blind by, again, selfishness (the betrayal of the crown and how it impacts her son's life, her marriage with his uncle (her late husband brother!), how she didn't show any sign of care about his grief, etc.) that she didn't see her son needs but even so paraded herself as a Good Mother Who Cares Only About Her Child; the love (maybe for them it was love, but can we really call it love when it left both of them miserable?) between Ophelia and Hamlet and how it was so easily thrown away in the mindset of duty, of fear, of revenge. how they didn't try to understand each other and did things without thinking (for hamlet only in glimpses) about the consequences of their actions on their relationship. and I know some part of the point of the whole play is to highlight the blindness of revenge, hate, and grief but still hamlet and horatio remained true to each other through it all. and I'm not even saying it in a gay way but from the beginning through the end they remained loyal and genuine, we don't see selfishness or recklessness, it's actually funny how they operate at a level we don't see happening in the other relationships in the play. and yes, hamlet is a twat lunatic who loves drama, but even so, he doesn't hurt horatio in any way and trusts him until the end without one doubt about his loyalty. and we see repeatedly that horatio cares about him. he cares. and while hamlet is a selfish person, horatio is selfless. and I think it's beautiful how they complement themselves.
