I recently learned at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles that researchers sometimes tag Monarch Butterflies to track their migration patterns. If you happen to come across a fallen Monarch that's tagged, you can send the specimen back to the original center and help with the study and updating of their database.
I get to see a couple of Monarchs in my neighborhood during my morning walks to the coffee shop. It gives me some form of solace especially after reading about their population drastically declining due to their habitats being destroyed â fire, environmental changes, etc. Climate change is real. Donât let anyone tell you otherwise, because itâs not that theyâre uneducated, itâs simply because they have no intention to plan for a better world for our children.
While I've had the pleasure of experiencing these fluttery beauties fly carefreely around me, it was only within the last few weeks that I got to see a real Monarch caterpillar for the first time in my life at a learning garden I visited. It was pure magic for someone like me seeing them up close and personal! If you have the space, you can help by growing milkweeds in your garden or patio. Milkweed is a plant that the species prefer to lay their eggs on, and offers tiny clusters of pink to orange flowers â a great plant selection even for those who only enjoy enhancing barren spaces with ornamentals.
I have never come across any fallen Monarchs, but did pick up another species a few years ago and kept it in a tiny box. It became an inspiration and reference source for 'Metamorphosis', a painting that I had created for a solo that was held at Thinkspace Projects awhile back.
It has been approximately five years and the tiny beauty is still in its little box, and is being referenced again for a new painting I am working on. If you know what species it is, please feel free to share :)

Amy Solâs âBird of Fluxâ at Thinkspace Projects.
Currently on view at Thinkspace Projects in Culver City, California is artist Amy Solâs gorgeous solo exhibition âBird of Flux.â
From Thinkspace, âIn her new body of work, Sol explores themes of transition, adventure, and adaptation, considering the individual faced by external and internal forces of change. In âBird of Fluxâ physical metamorphosis is posited as a visual metaphor for inner transformation, offering the viewer borrowed ingress into an imaginative universe of muted hues, unlikely companions, softened edges, and shadowy phantasms.â
âBird of Fluxâ will be on view until March 24th, 2018.
