anyways . thinking about immortality in tsoa . thinking about how thetis wants to make achilles a god, how she tells patroclus he will die soon . thinking about how when achilles asks patroclus if he would want to be a god, he just laughs (for what could be funnier?) and says he doesn't think it likely to happen . but also, what is immortality if not just living forever? and for achilles, this is actually possible, thetis thinks that if he becomes famous enough, he'll live forever.
but then patroclus dies. and then achilles dies, and the both of them are dead, and all thoughts of immortality are crushed beneath the brutal weight of mortality, for everything needs a beginning and an end, what is life without death?
except we still remember them. except almost every person will know the name of achilles, and a third of those will know patroclus as well. except we have an entire tendon named for achilles, except hundreds of thousands of people have read tsoa or the iliad or any other of the hundreds of things with the two of them.
except achilles and patroclus are remembered, and what is immortality if not remembrance?
so yeah, thetis got her wish. so yeah, you could say achilles is immortal now, and patroclus with him. but the cost to immortality? well, that was their deaths
