[ID: Withnail is a Hamlet who exists on the margins of society. A collision between the traditional perceptions of Shakespeare and hippy counter-culture occurs here, during Withnail's final speech. The cultural significance of Hamlet is both endorsed and contracted by Withnail.
On the one hand, Grant plays Withnail as a Byronic figure who is undoubtably talented and creative but is also given to bouts of introspection, self-doubt and self-destruction (the features of the 'classic' 19th cent. Hamlet.) On the other hand, Withnail drops out of urban 'straight' society. He abdicates his privileged class background, where Shakespeare forms the bedrock of dramatic and literary tradition, to exist instead in a demi-monde dominated by alcohol and drugs. Even Withnail's escape to the country becomes a quest for survival, one cut short by his hasty return to city life. Ironically, the final scene civilization can Withnail negotiate his way through an existence that, to him, is no more than a 'quintessence of dust'.]

"...For [the film to be about] a 13-year-old girl... she should be 30 feet tall. Her experience is bigger than you and you should be able to sit back and humble yourself before her because her interior life is as big as anybody’s. Why can’t an epic story about the human condition be about a girl walking into a pool party instead of some fucking poet in a cabin in the woods or some guy with a sword?"
-- Bo Burnham on the nature of the human condition (2)
