Stuff you should know about Deaf People
Being Deaf is not just about not hearing.
It affects how we experience conversations, friendships, and the world around us.
Here are some things I wish more people understood:
1. Deaf people are not ignoring you.
If we don’t respond, it doesn’t always mean we’re being rude. Sometimes we genuinely didn’t hear you. Getting our attention first helps a lot.
2. Looking at us while you talk matters.
A lot of Deaf and hard-of-hearing people use facial expressions, lip-reading, and body language to help understand what is being said. Turning away or covering your mouth can make things much harder.
3. “Can you repeat that?” is not us being difficult.
Sometimes we heard the sound but missed the meaning. Sometimes we only caught part of the sentence. Repeating yourself helps us be included.
4. We don’t need to be “fixed.”
Being Deaf is a different way of experiencing the world. We might need accommodations, but we are still people with personalities, humor, dreams, and stories.
5. Deaf people are not all the same.
Some use sign language. Some use hearing aids. Some use cochlear implants. Some speak. Some don’t. There isn’t one single Deaf experience.
6. Small things can mean a lot.
Facing us when you talk. Making sure we’re included. Being patient without making us feel like a burden.
Those little things show respect.
Most Deaf people aren’t asking the world to be perfect.
We just want to be treated like we were already part of it🖤
