i do think some bad takes on characters could be solved by responding "well, they're an adult." about it
thimble "didn't know" thjazi or his plans or interiority or whatever? well, she's still an adult who chose to behave the way she behaved, so discuss that rather than what she did or didn't know as if that absolves her of the moral complexity you're so scared of
like. oh, you're trying to shave all ambiguity, nuance or complexity off of a character by assigning blame to other people in their lives, or pretending they are a naive child who would not have done the things they did if they had the information that the viewer has? well, they are an adult in the narrative and they did make those choices, so none of that matters.
We all know Laura Bailey wins DND. We all know this. I’m going to gush about Thimble anyway.
Thimble’s whole character concept engages with the narrative Brennan has created so well. It plays off the Tinkerbell trope, not just surface level, what if Tinkerbell had a sword! But what if Peter Pan wasn’t there anymore? What if Tink had to figure out who she wanted to be and what she was going to do?
Thimble’s whole life she was pretty little pixie, then a gift, then sidekick. She didn’t age. She didn’t change.
Now she has no choice but to do so. Change has come for her in a terrible and violent way, and meeting it head on, it turns out she’s terrifying. She can access an ability that’s only been a legend amongst her people, she killed the knight that took out Lord Royce nearly single-handedly. She destroyed the undead monstrosity that was Raimond Davinos despite the fact it could’ve killed her in one blow.
And yet she still doesn’t feel like she’s a hero, that was Thaz’s job. Her character arc about stepping out of someone else’s shadow (no pun intended) and into her own light is one of my favorite threads of the campaign. I can’t wait to see where she goes.
Had to try to make Occtis (and Thimble!!!!) in Veilguard bc of the disection option for the scars + mourn watch.
I tried to stick as close to the original arts as possible even though veilguard's skin color options annoy the hell out of me. Have a tall lad & his short pixie friend. I think Thimble with bangs would be adorable.
