So like. Every Hayffie fan knows the moment in Mockingjay pt. 2 where Finnick and Annie are married, when we see Haymitch and Effie sitting together. Haymitch sort of glances in her direction, then nods to himself as if affirming something. And like— maybe he’s thinking about Effie, their relationship, what it might be like if they had a proper wedding— who knows? All we really do know is that by the end of the movies, they’re comfortable enough to share a kiss and he tells her “Don’t be a stranger.”

But like. What if he DID propose? What if he DID propose to her at some point after the trials were over, when they were both able to decide where to go and what to do with their lives, and she said NO?!?

We do see her crying at their goodbye, and I think for the longest time I assumed it was more of a mutual decision between them that a relationship would never work, but like— what if Effie is crying because SHE CHOSE TO LET HIM GO?!?

“The damage, the fatigue, the imperfections. That’s how they recognize me, why I belong to them.” -pg. 90

“Such a young man when he rose to power. Such a clever one to keep it.” -Finnick Odair pg. 171

“For someone to make Peeta forget he loves me… no one could do that.” -pg. 181

Okay so. I don’t have very many unpopular opinions in general, but if I had to choose a few:

1 - As much as I love to see more of Elizabeth Banks in Mockingjay, I miss the intrigue and mystery we get from the book, where we get just enough dialogue to whet our curiosity in regards to what happened to Effie’s imprisonment. The movie really could’ve done so much with that and every day I’m a little more sad that we didn’t get to see that plot point fulfilled. Does her imprisonment make up for the wrongs she’s done? No, but it certainly makes for a more interesting character, at least in my opinion

2 - I’m not sure I want to see any more books in the series, at least for a while, and that’s just because I think the less we know, the better. Or maybe I’m just too entrenched in fandom interpretations (aka: Hayffie) to really be bothered

3 - I think, when it comes to fandom, we should let people envision these characters however they like. Whether it be in writing or other fanart, I believe the whole point of having these fan spaces is that different people are going to have different life experiences that lead to various interpretations, canon or otherwise, and we should never try to take that away from anyone unless they’re promoting harm/actually hurting someone. These are fictional characters in a fictional universe, and I do believe that most fans have the ability to acknowledge and understand the moral, political, and societal aspects of the work while still being able make headcanons and enjoy these characters outside of the original framework. This is of course coming from someone who saw the first movie before I got the chance to read the books, but going back and revisiting the trilogy as an adult has changed very few of my original opinions. In some ways, I’m still that kid who shipped Haysilee and Hayffie, and who can’t read the books or any fanfiction without seeing/hearing the film’s actors in my head. It’s just my opinion, and maybe I’m wrong, but we need to stop policing what other people imagine and just accept that sometimes it’s okay for them to have different opinions - even if they seem a little weird or “wrong” in the context of the original work. And if you don’t like someone’s posts or fanfiction or art or ships, there’s a nifty little button you can use to not see it anymore and move on
